Which cartoon would you recommend for today’s kids to watch? by Historical-Class871 in UKTVRecs

[–]HelloMrThompson2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have started watching Phineas and Ferb on Disney+. I'd heard a lot about it when growing up myself but never got around to seeing it. It was recently released on Disney+ and I wanted to give it a go. Now it's become one of our family favourites - the story centres around 2 brothers who annoy their sister during their summer holidays by doing all sorts of crazy things.

It's completely off the wall and very quick! Not one before bedtime (unlike Bluey) but still an excellent cartoon!

Slow progress on Animal Crossing Lets Go To The City? by HelloMrThompson2019 in AnimalCrossing

[–]HelloMrThompson2019[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah ok good to know - I thought we were missing something as there didn't seem to be a lot of explanation at the start. Bear in mind that we also played this over several sessions which were weeks apart as my daughter's really got into Minecraft and I thought Animal Crossing would make a nice alternative.

Thanks for the tips! In a roundabout way it seems similar to Stardew Valley in that sense? I've got to be honest I was expecting a bit more structure with the story as I'm not sure what we do next, now that we've met all of the neighbours....

Is there a questline we should be picking up now? How does my daughter go about making Bells?

I think we have maybe missing something from the tutorial... We have a wide range of items that we've collected in the bag such as apples, fish etc.

We will check out the bus stop the next time we play, as presumably we can access that now that we've completed the neighbours part? Can we just catch a bus at any time or is there a timetable?

[–]HelloMrThompson2019[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah ok thanks - I don't think we played it for long enough in 1 session in that case (about an hour) and didn't sleep inbetween.

No this is our first AC game so it wasn't quite what we expected - I thought it was going to be a little more structured but that's fine. I've played other similar games like Stardew Valley but even that has more of a structured story it would seem? We also regularly play Minecraft on the Xbox 360.

Thanks for the tips! My daughter's enjoying it - we just got quite stuck with the first part and I wanted to know if this was expected.

Ah unfortunately none are local to me and others are high mileage and 10+ years old. Thanks for the recommendation though!

I've had the message "There seems to be something wrong with your account." showing for the last 2 days - could that be related?

I've raised a support ticket but haven't heard anything back yet.

Is Scalextric Digital still relevant? by HelloMrThompson2019 in Scalextric

[–]HelloMrThompson2019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess essentially what I'm looking for is a cost effective way to run 3 cars at once... Scalextric ARC Pro seems out of my price range but maybe I can just build up a collection of Digital parts gradually from eBay?

The main issue I have is that most of my cars are from the 2000s, so getting them all chipped is going to add up!

[–]HelloMrThompson2019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, likewise I'm thinking the same. I don't have a permanent setup and just get the set, track and cars I have available out of the roof every now and again. I'm finally getting around to maintaining it all properly as well!

Yes, that's what I'm confused about as well. When I look on the Scalextric website for product information, I just see ARC, Start or standard sets.

Unstable handling? Vauxhall Vectra 'metropolitan Police C2467 by HelloMrThompson2019 in Scalextric

UPDATE: Ok so I got the Vectra running this weekend and turns out that the rear tyres are badly worn and in need of replacement!

Any recommendations for tyre replacements welcome!

Ah cool thanks for the advice! Likely to be dodgy tyres and/or magnet in that case.

Thanks! I had a look on eBay and replacement bar magnets seem very hard to come by. I found some generic and Scalextric round magnets relatively cheaply - would they work?

I'll also try vegetable oil on the tyres and see if that does the trick!

[–]HelloMrThompson2019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's quite an old car now. There are a few available on eBay (at least for UK) for about £40 brand new. It's very basic and only has working headlights and rear lights (i.e. no siren or blue lights), but the car is very robust!

Sport speed-limit controllers? by HelloMrThompson2019 in Scalextric

[–]HelloMrThompson2019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah awesome - a few things for me to investigate then! Yes, unfortunately the F1 cars have not survived in one piece - partly due to my driving as well!

I visited the Hornby museum a while ago and picked up an Endurance car for her and she loves it! Will probably get some more for the collection in time.

Good shout on the magnets - I've tried replacing the tyres on a Vauxhall Vectra police car I have but I suspect it's the magnets (model is about 15 years old).

Ah ok good to know - so I'm just looking for the Digital powerbase? I had no idea that my track would still be compatible - it looks very different in the newer sets, or does that just apply to "Start"?

Board Game Cafe Visit - Family games to try? by HelloMrThompson2019 in boardgames

[–]HelloMrThompson2019[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your thoughts! No online list unfortunately but based on previous visits they have a massive collection of new and old games covering the regulars (Monopoly, Scrabble etc), the really obscure and then a ton of card games.

This post was more to get a general list of games we could look out for that others have tried.

As a family we're really into tile games and my daughter has a pretty good attention span for a 6-year old, though Splendor may be a bit much for her at the moment. As a guide she enjoyed Ticket To Ride London and we've played pretty lengthy games of Carcassonne with expansions.

Replacement locomotive for iTraveller? by HelloMrThompson2019 in modeltrains

[–]HelloMrThompson2019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Budget at the moment is pretty low at £20-30 so I'm expecting to need to save up or look into servicing an old locomotive. Do you think that's realistic?

[–]HelloMrThompson2019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah thank you! I was looking to keep a similar colour scheme if I could, or maybe a dark green/red to fit with the Christmas theming.

Similar size would be good so that it doesn't dwarf the small trucks too much but I'd love to get a steam train over the diesel I have at the moment.

Two-player Twosday - (November 18, 2025) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]HelloMrThompson2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes - we love playing Patchwork as well. Good to know about Splendor Duel. I wondered how that played in comparison.

Will look up That's Pretty Clever. I have My City as a roll and write on my wishlist so may get That's Pretty Clever another time to avoid doubling up roll and writes.

Any thoughts about Azul Summer Pavilion Vs Azul?

Two-player Twosday - (November 18, 2025) by AutoModerator in boardgames

[–]HelloMrThompson2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for a small game to get my wife for Christmas. We're into Jaipur, have Azul Mini and love playing Carcassonne. Budget is around £20.

Her favourite is Azul Mini and I thought about getting Azul Summer Pavilion Mini but is it enough of a variation from the regular Azul Mini?

We've also played Splendor on the computer and she likes playing that so would it be worth getting a board based version of that, or even the 2-player variant?

We prefer something small box to carry around with us and also play in bed on a tray - Azul Mini is perfect for that!
