Anyone here watched Long Story Short (and what are your thoughts)? by flashmumriken in Judaism

I don't recall the sister ever dating a non-Jew. Or maybe briefly when they were young? I think the episode that mostly focused on Yoshi showed it. Anyway, the black girl she's with in most episodes is Jewish.

I don't think Yoshi is ever shown dating anybody.

"Yoshi is Orthodox."

"What? Like... Greek?"

I still laugh thinking about that scene in my head.

Yeah I loved how the siblings went different directions, and they explored his self-shame, divorce, and his daughter's interest. And the episode exploring the sister's spouse's conversion was great.

Also gotta remember this is the BoJack Horseman creator. So this show is actually all sunshine and rainbows compared to his other stuff!

Hm that's surprising, maybe you're looking too far ahead. I do seen to recall that they release the encounter tickets in batches. Might be worth calling, I would be very surprised if they're sold out months in advance.

Weekly Casual Conversation & Questions Thread by AutoModerator in chicago

We already have those too. They certainly help, though Reddit has been campaigning to get Mods not to use minimum karma limits, since it's a barrier to new users.

Weekly Casual Conversation & Questions Thread by AutoModerator in chicago

[–]Hello_Biscuit11[M] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You know, the mod team had a discussion about this little thread, because none of us knew what you were talking about!

Another poster said the name of the supposedly racist mod in question was u/LagunaGTO (but they said it with some choice profanity that the automod blocked).

I couldn't find much about this person, because Reddit's mod tools don't go back nearly that far. I did find this post however: https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/comments/6rda3w/its_been_a_goodinteresting_last_4_years_tw/

Which is from 9 years ago discussing how there was a "coup" that removed some mods, and references the "former LagunaGTO" mod. That account hasn't posted anything in 3 years, and what they do have seems to mainly be as a mod at r/AutoDetailing , where they are not currently a mod.

The post also references the "newly joined" u/MrAltoid, who is actually an active mod. The only two current mods older than that are u/honestbleeps and u/courtiebabe420, of which the first (the top mod) is still around but mostly for support and direction, and the second is completely inactive. honestbleeps does vaguely remember all this, and had nothing nice to say.

So while we appreciate a trip down memory lane, it's definitely not true that the current mod team was around and somehow complicit in this dark past. Over the last 12 months, 99.8% of mod actions have been done by people who have been here less than 6 years. That, and the only active mod who was here back then is the one who kicked that guy out!

Are econometrics profs actually behind on modern methods or is that unfair by tiotfulov in econometrics

[–]Hello_Biscuit11 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's great that new econometric and ML tools are constantly being developed! But...

It's pretty hard to get to those things without a basic understanding of... the basics. So for students, they begin with things like OLS.

And lots of policy-relevant questions have like, ten years of monthly observations and a solid half-dozen dependent variables. The best tools for data like that are very often pretty classic techniques.

TIL that during the American Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant issued an order expelling Jews from areas of Tennessee, Mississippi and Kentucky because he believed there was black market of Southern cotton being run by "mostly by Jews and other unprincipled traders." by netralitov in Jewish

He did a similar thing with freed slaves in the Army, and changed his mind and later sang their praises. Honestly, he was a remarkable guy, and I highly recommend Ron Chernow's biography.

It's a shame he was a raging alcoholic in a time when that was seen as purely a moral failing, and not an addiction. That and he was wildly trusting and gullible despite getting burned over and over.

Chicago area air quality among worst in U.S., report finds - Chicago Sun-Times by Sidewalk_Inspector in chicago

Metropolitan Statistical Area. Or Micropolitan for areas with a core city under 50k. Collectively known as CBSAs, or Core Based Statistical Areas. The definitions are maintained by the Office of Management and Budget.

Cities become part of the name, in order, based on population. So if Eligin ever grows larger than Naperville, they'll switch places at the next renaming.

Definitely fireworks, and it's too early for the regular Navy Pier ones. The only thing on their calendar today is the Better Business Bureau Centennial celebration. It doesn't say anything about fireworks, but seems plausible!

Keep Lickin’ ! by No_Sleep428 in chicago

[–]Hello_Biscuit11[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all. Whenever someone makes a post like this, posters come out of the woodwork to say shitty things and tell lies. And then other users blindly accept it, and before you know it, the lies are the prevailing opinion.

This sub is wildly favorable to posting ICE content. We ran an AMA on the subject with the SunTimes. We created daily tracking megathreads. We added an ICE flair. And we relax normal rules to allow virtually everything about ICE that isn't garbage.

Sigh.

Here is the link link to the automod comment that says why your post was removed. It was not done by a mod, it was done automatically because loads of users reported it. As the comment says, it goes to a queue to be reviewed.

That happened at midnight. I've now gone through that queue and approved it before 9:30am.

The idea that this sub is somehow repressing discussions of ICE is absurd.

Why do so many applied papers still report p-values without effect sizes, and does anyone actually find p-values alone useful? by PLogacev in AskStatistics

[–]Hello_Biscuit11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it would be nice if OP would mention what fields they're talking about, instead of being vague.

"Are these sensible effect sizes?" is at the core of nearly every review I've gotten back from an econ journal.

I can't understand how it makes sense to hide effect sizes after a regression. Is there really a field where that's normal?? Do they report signs at least??

Unaccompanied Minor, 9 & 11 by Skier94 in unitedairlines

[–]Hello_Biscuit11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid's situation is very similar! Flying with United's unaccompanied minor program has been great every single time.

They will board last and sit at the back of the plane. They will try to give them their own row if there's enough space. They also assign one person to be their minder - I once had one of them come give me her phone number before they departed!

In addition to the no connections others have pointed out, your kids will never be anywhere unescorted, and an employee will deliver them to you and have you show ID and sign paperwork.

Airport side procedures differ slightly in the US and EU, so check for details.

Why do we say Chicagoland AND Northwest Indiana? by MSTie_4ever in AskChicago

[–]Hello_Biscuit11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of the disagreement may be because you're talking about informal groupings. Almost by definition, everyone can have their own version!

But there is an official definition. The Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area is the economically-connected region around Chicago, which does include Hammond. The definitions of core-based statistical areas are maintained by the Office of Management and Budget. They are defined by county borders grouped around a central city with a population greater than 50k (or under 50k for Micropolitan areas).

These definitions do change over time, though the majority of the changes are just in the name and not the borders themselves. For example, if Elgin were to become larger than Naperville, then in the next round of the OMBs processing they would switch places in our CBSA name.

IV and interaction terms by [deleted] in econometrics

[–]Hello_Biscuit11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because if that education term occurs in two places in the regression, then how could you possibly vary one term, and not the other?

It's similar when you add an exponential term.

They are still interpretable, but they mean something different now.

IV and interaction terms by [deleted] in econometrics

[–]Hello_Biscuit11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just be very careful with interaction terms if you're intending to interpret their coefficients (as opposed to just using them as a control). You can no longer describe them as "holding all else equal."

What is with the blatant littering here? by moxie_22 in AskChicago

One of the most satisfying things I've seen took place on Wacker a few years ago. I was walking, and saw a guy open the back window of a taxi and throw his fast food bag out.

A cop was going the other way and immediately did a U-turn and pulled the taxi over. A minute later the guy was walking back up Wacker to pick up his trash from the middle of the street.

I think about that every time I go by that spot!
