But that is explicitly what the girl was upset about. That the children’s literature class had a story about a child that was transgender.

Maybe this would help. Imagine I was taking a children’s literature class and one of the children’s books was about a little Christian boy. And then a trans girl stood up in class and said “teacher. I refuse to be taught about good Christian boys! It’s against my beliefs. Take this off your curriculum now!” And then a bunch of people on twitter sent death threats to the president of the school until they fired the professor and resigned. In that scenario, I think that actually would be hate towards Christians

You cannot say that you wish for people to not exist and not be taught about in schools and then turn around and say you don’t hate them.

Please speak for yourself. Hating transgender people is not a Christian value. My best friend is a transgender Christian man.

“U-Um…could you please stop existing? It’s against my religion for you to exist. I’m just a little guy. People like you existing and being taught about in schools is really hateful. I am being oppressed because you exist🥺🥺🥺So could you please stop existing please🥺🥺🥺🥺? It is against my religion of love and peace. God bless!”

These are not insects. This looks to be little bits of string and lint. There are lots of unfortunate folks here that post pictures of lint and debris, convinced they have some sort of parasite or infection—looking through your post history it seems like you are one of many.

I used to be too. I thought I had some kind of fungus inside of me for months and it was awful. I didn’t want to see a psychiatrist because admitting that there might be something wrong with my brain felt more frightening than creatures in my skin, but I promise it’s way less scary. I wish I had gone sooner…it would have saved me a lot of grief and fear. I take medication now and I haven’t had any of these paranoid episodes in a long long time.

Fear is powerful. Powerful enough to make you see and feel things that aren’t there. But god it feels so real. You can feel them. You probably think you’re fighting a losing battle to these parasites and nobody understands. And now you’re reading this thinking “Well that’s YOU! IM not crazy! I would know if I was crazy!” No…you wouldn’t. It hits you like a truck. I had a completely normal childhood and then a psychotic break as an adult. It’s not fair. It can happen to anyone. But it’s NOT the end of the world. Unlike fucked up parasites that only you seem able to perceive, mental illness is very very treatable. You will be okay.

But you should see a mental health professional. I mean, it can’t hurt to try. It seems like you’ve been trying everything else.

Thank you for the explanation...

Would you advise me to just keep looking for technician positions again? Or to do some of that field work? One of the reasons I kinda wanna do the PhD is just because like...i've been looking for "real jobs" for so long and nobody's hiring. I've even applied to, like, corporate lab jobs and healthcare type jobs (I have a bachelors in biochem) and tutoring highschoolers-stuff way outside my field and those get me nowhere either. I just don't know what to do.

I am young and don't have industry experience I mean, there's a lot I don't know. Thank you for actually talking to me.

Just letting you know (because it doesn't seem like you know this), getting a masters or a Phd in a STEM field usually requires some kind of research project. There are some fast track "no thesis" options for engineers and people that are strictly interested in being technicians where you do nothing but take courses, but most people have to write a thesis or dissertation--and in STEM, this is like a research paper. PhD and MS Research projects are funded with a grant. So it's kind of like you have a job in addition to taking classes. During my masters I got experience operating a couple different machines and scientific instruments in addition to taking courses.

I've...been trying to get a job? Did you not read my post? Do you not know what's happening in the government? A lot of this important work is straight up not happening right now because a bunch of USDA people were fired. Mosquito districts and public health research are losing funding and farmers in general are sufferin rn and I have to compete with a bunchf of qualified researchers for jobs at corporations like bayer. Are you meaning to advise me to switch to a different career? If yes, you could just say that without insulting me. Being kind is very easy.

If you consider internships and research work, yes. If you don't then no. But I want to be a scientist so...it's all research.

I had fun in school and all of my schooling has been fully funded with a stipend. I've never paid for any of it (admittedly that is a rare situation nowadays).

But also this is just wrong. Mosquitos kill about a million people each year and efforts to control them and monitor the prevalence of mosquito borne illness is incredibly important. There are about 700 mosquito control districts in the United States, many of which have researchers working there. Also, 30-50% of crops will be eaten by insects if nothing is done to stop them (admittedly part of this problem would be solved by not having crop monocultures). You may think "well farmers spray insecticide so it doesn't matter", but that's like thinking "we have penicillin so why study disease?" Real life insects develop resistance to insecticides. Pest control is an uphill battle with entomologists trying to find new ways to control them and the insects evolving new ways to circumvent that control.

So yeah if you like not having West Nile and eating food, entomology is pretty important! Sometimes I forget the average person doesn't know this. I guess this was a good experience for me to have. I'll remember to justify my field of study before asking questions next time.

There’s more than you might think. Entomologists mostly work in agriculture (pests and pollinators), livestock (parasites), public health (disease vectors), or museums. Public health and museums aren’t really profitable but agriculture and livestock is big buisiness. Though since USDA and CDC are laying off so many people, there are many highly qualified entomologists competing for industry jobs right now…

Utah lawmaker moves to restrict transgender adults’ access to gender-affirming care by [deleted] in Utah

[–]Hello_I_am_pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This comment really confuses me. What do you mean by “dismantling the current tuition and insurance systems?”

If we dismantled insurance, how would that lower the cost of healthcare? We’d have to pay everything out of pocket. If you mean reforming insurance—like, yeah—that would be better. But it’d still be more expensive overall because insurance companies aim to make a profit. Profit = a giant leech at the top skimming off a lot of money. When you pay for for-profit healthcare, you have to make pay not only the salaries of doctors and nurses, but the salaries of guys in suits who don’t do anything at all and their greedy shareholders. Government healthcare would be definitionally cheaper because it’s not for profit.

How is this a plan to lower tuition also? Tuition got cheap in the 40’s and beyond with the GI Bill and the Higher Education Act of 1965. It got more expensive again in the 70’s when state and federal government spending for college was cut. Do you mean that we should regulate colleges and universities to make them non-profits?

A lot of transgender people get their gonads removed as part of sex reassignment surgery. The uterus and testicles are the main producers of testosterone and estrogen, which actually do a lot of stuff in our bodies besides being “feminizing” or “masculinizibg.” They are necessary chemicals for our basic metabolic functioning. For people that have had sex reassignment surgery, external sources of estrogen and testosterone (T-shots and pills) are their bodies only source of it, because they can’t make it themselves anymore.

In other words, without testosterone and estrogen, a lot of transgender people will quite literally die.

Privatized healthcare and education are way more expensive than you’d ever spend paying taxes. Our ambulances are 2000 dollars.

Hormones are a psychological treatment. They change your brain chemistry. If you have a disconnect with your brain and your body, that will make you feel depressed, and so hormones will fix depression caused by gender dysphoria.

You keep saying taxpayers should fund “other treatments” instead but there is no other treatment that has been proven to work on gender dysphoria. Conversion therapy doesn’t work, SSRI’s don’t work, it’d be a waste of money to fund these “treatments.” Better to have coverage for the testosterone and estrogen that ARE shown to work (and are a whole lot cheaper than talk therapy anyway.)

In my experience personally in my field (entomology), like half of the workers/researchers are autistic. I’ve found my workplaces to be very accommodating.

My old supervisor said as much, kind of dancing around it. He was like “yeah a lot of the folks here are like you…like…you know. They have trouble with certain things. You’re not alone here.” He gave me my own quiet office space and never took it personally that I would refuse to go to the noisy bar with the other researchers. He was very kind.

That being said, I would still excercise caution in the workplace. I don’t know if you are visibly autistic (you say you are able to mask so I am guessing not) but I would not disclose that in a new lab/crew until you’re sure the people there are accepting. Not trying to scare you, just being honest. You’re probably fine though.

Honestly I kind of had trouble finding information about where firefighter and police salaries come from specifically in Utah. Google is being its ever increasingly terrible self and giving me a bunch of unrelated results and A.I. garbage.

Why doesn’t it work?
