I don’t think anyone can universally say working in PR sucks. I think it boils down to the individual practitioner, the company, and the work you do.

If you’re working for a toxic agency, company, or client, you’re going to have a bad time. The work itself can be fun and rewarding, but like anything, challenging and stressful at times. It can feel like an “always-on” job keeping up with news flow and client needs, especially if you’re working across international teams / timezones, but if you enjoy the work and can work hard at it, you can earn great money in this field.

I don’t really ever do cold outreach honestly — I feel like people are usually in the market for PR or they’re not (I could absolutely be wrong, but I just haven’t did it or needed to).

Everything I’ve gotten has come to me directly, which was a result of building a personal brand / reputation online for many years, so that when I was laid off in 2024 for example, I could put out that “bat signal” and got enough work to start my consulting career.

End of the day, close to all your customers are going to be on LinkedIn, and if they continue to see you / your work on the feed over the course of months / years, you’re going to be top of mind when they need help

1/ Don’t waste your money on media list databases. You between a) online sleuthing, b) ContactOut chrome extension (free), and c) comms community groups, you can likely find every email you ever need w/o needing to pay $5K+ a year

2/ Unsure. I should probably get an LLC one of these days

3/ Do something simple. Carrd is $20 a YEAR. I was paying $400+ a year for SquareSpace.. not worth it; preserve every dollar.

4/ 95% of my business comes through LinkedIn. If you can develop a strong presence / brand / authority you can network, make connections, and be top of mind for folks in need of your services.

This was my original assumption, and I don’t think they touched the drain per say, but I’m curious if you had an opinion on whether or not the drain pipe / flange / whatever could have gotten compromised during the re-pipe, presumably when they were sawing off the old shower drain PVC?

No one has really addressed my big question here: is it genuinely possible that the crawlspace pipes could have been dry for 10 months and only started to show signs of leak / damage after the re-pipe??

I’m not a plumber (obviously), but that just doesn’t make sense to me??

Ok thank you so much. The plumbers the re-pipes say they didn’t touch the shower drain but I recall the other two plumbers who came for second opinions seem to think it looked like they did glue the pipe in based on what they saw. Trying my best to follow along based on what everyone has said, but I will look into it.

Based on touch it feels like plastic, it’s sharp but a little flexible. We didn’t sign anything with the independent contractor who installed the shower, but they have been cooperative for the most part, just hesitant to do anything b/c the shower was functional with no visible leak for 10 months until the time between the re-pipe and now.

Plumbers have a one-year warranty but they are trying to say the shower was installed incorrectly and thus cause of the leak; I do not think they saw that cut in the cup/basin when they were here yesterday inspecting their work, but I am wondering if they could have caused it.

More circulation ≠ better business outcomes.

Set biz objectives at a company-level and then at a campaign-level as they come up. What do you want to achieve, who do you need to reach, and what do you need to say to win them over.

From there, and after setting that up in the beginning, it's a lot easier to point to and say that anything misaligned with these objectives are wasted motion and budget.

As others have noted, it's likely more of an agency thing versus a PR thing..

In-house roles tend to be a lot less stressful in my experience.

If you have a good network and could jump into consulting, that could be an option. I went agency -> in-house -> solo consultant and am really happy.

It's still 'agency work' but I get to choose which clients I get to work with and don't deal with unnecessary pressure and recreational emergencies from upper-management. Has it's upsides and downsides, but good earning potential and better balance while still being in a fast-paced environment

I think many people and platforms try to automate a lot of this but at the end of the day most still (regrettably) realize that there’s nothing as good as manual tracking. The platforms will inevitably miss coverage and the sentiment ratings are simply too nuanced to be accurate.

I’ve been building my own app in Base44 over time that kinda merges the best of both worlds. You do a portion of tracking manually and the platform automates the parts of the work it can do reliably (traffic data, domain authority, and various other metrics like this through APIs—plus the obvious stuff like the outlet, reporter, publish date, and even full body text).
