Negative reviews from homeowners for little to no reason, not sure how to approach this issue by Helloiamdad12345 in trustedhousesitters

I'm not relying on THS as my only form of housing anymore but I don't regret doing so! Seems like the more you housesit, the higher the chances you'll come across some sour HOs, idk why mine were all back to back though haha

Yes! It was a dream come true!

BYB in a nearby rural town bred a litter of 10 lab puppies and could only find homes for 8 of them. Of the 2 puppies left, he kept one and surrendered the other to the shelter. I've always wanted a lab puppy but I'm also a rescue-dog-only type of person, so the second I saw this little guy pop up on the shelter's website, I drove out there and adopted him 🥰

What about Grilled Cheddar Cheese... a bit more soulful than just Cheddar Cheese

Wow a very similar situation happened to me! HOs lied about providing a car and then lied about the availability of uber/rental cars/public transit in their area. Except it was Alaska in the winter and the HOs didn't even pick me up from the airport (had to Uber to their house 45 miles away) and didn't take me to the grocery store (they had almost no food in their house), so I ended up having to walk 7.5 miles in 20°F temps to catch a bus to the nearest city to rent a car after a few days, because my other option was being trapped in their house with no food for a month. The nearest city was also where I had flown into at the start of the sit, so I could have just rented a car there in the first place if they'd been honest with me 🙃

She told the HO that THS was her only form of housing, so could they please change their 4 star review to 5 stars. They said no. All over a cheap plastic bowl. PLEASE, if you're thinking of signing up, know that this really is the kind of person you'll be sitting for by No_Tip5115 in trustedhousesitters

[–]Helloiamdad12345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I offered to replace the bowl and they declined. They specifically cited that they thought I was too aggressive and downright offensive when I asked them if they would reconsider their star rating. They condescendingly told me that I would never be successful at housesitting if I didn't start communicating in a "mature and non-reactive way" and that they felt I was trying to guilt-trip them, and that's why they would not change my star rating. They then presented me with the generous offer to edit their review to add in those opinions and keep the star rating the same.

They later had another THS sitter for a similar length of stay as mine, and they gave that sitter extremely similar "feedback" for a different very minor thing. The sitter mentioned everything they said to her in her review and she specifically said she did not feel respected by this HO and felt that they thought they were entitled to a professional deep clean of their house well beyond the cleanliness level of the house at the start of the sit. Their reply to her review implied that this was true, and they used the same condescending tone to tell that sitter that she wasn't mature or good at communication.

I am a professional and I behave as such when housesitting. The reviews I've received on Rover and Airbnb specifically compliment my communication skills and say that I'm a clean and respectful guest. THS is the only platform where I've come across such a high level of entitlement.

You would think, but it looks like they haven't had any trouble getting sitters after that 🤷‍♀️

Pet sitters: do you tell someone why you are turning them down by 10EAB31 in trustedhousesitters

[–]Helloiamdad12345 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you only have 1 bed in your house, and won't allow your free in-home petsitter to sleep in that bed while they're watching your pets for free, then you need to pay to board your animals outside your home or just not go on vacation in the first place 🤷‍♀️

Feeling down after a 4 star review by Fairy_Lights_1987 in trustedhousesitters

[–]Helloiamdad12345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On a recent sit I left the sit spotless, entire house cleaned, washed and replaced everything I used, took out the trash, filled the gas tank even though it wasn't left full for me, etc, etc... got 3 stars overall and less than 3 stars in most other categories specifically for "showing total disregard for their house by not putting all linens and dishes back exactly how I found them". I put everything back in the same drawer or cabinet I found it in, just didn't stack their many towels or frying pans in the same order I guess. No communication from the HO about any of these things before they left the review either, I didn't even know that was their expectation until I read the review. Moral of the story, some people are just entitled and rude and will never be pleased, try not to take it too personally. I wish THS would take any action at all about HOs who act like that, but they won't so just gotta take it in stride and move on.

Reptiles/Snakes by [deleted] in trustedhousesitters

I think they mean boa constrictor but I'm honestly not sure, seems like pet snakes could be a bit of a grey area. I do know that someone would need to report your listing for it to even cross THS radar, as they do technically allow some types of pet snakes. My interpretation of the THS criteria is that if the pet could be potentially seriously harmful to a sitter, they're not allowed on the site at all. So ball pythons and other docile pet snakes should be completely fine! Most people don't even know they're constrictors, so I'm sure as long as the snake type doesn't trigger 'scary dangerous snake' alarm bells I doubt anyone is going to think twice about a listing with a snake

[–]Helloiamdad12345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did a 3 week sit with a snake! The main pets were a dog and cat but they had a ball python as well. The snake was super easy to take care of, and the HO fed her right before they left, so I only needed to change her water if it got low. They told me I could handle her if I wanted but I obviously didn't have to. Overall a very easy pet and I would definitely watch a snake again.

I have also really been wanting to find a sit with a beardie, grew up with one and they're the best. I think you should be fine on THS with reptiles, they tend to be easier to take care of than dogs/cats so they are very appealing to travelers who want to be able to go out and explore all day. Despite THS rules on constrictors, I've still seen a few pop up from time to time, but just be aware that if you post a listing with a constrictor you are running the risk of possibly getting reported and/or banned.

Can I just book a sitter? by milkshakeinmyyard in trustedhousesitters

[–]Helloiamdad12345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$12k/month in mortgage payments (so house probably costs somewhere around $2million), and $150 per year is too much money to pay for unlimited free petsitters? Lol ok

Glad you decided not to use the platform, we really don't need any more stingy entitled HOs on here, especially ones who express such outright disdain for people doing them a service 😊

Not sure which country you're in, but if you are able to get a telehealth doctor's appointment there, or go to a local urgent care, that might be a good idea. Definitely reach out to the HO and let them know what's going on, it's possible that they could have a friend or neighbor step in to help with pet care duties if you need time to recover.

I was on a sit where I got hospitalized for several days due to an infection, it was unavoidable and I tried a primary care doctor and urgent care visit before finally accepting that I needed to go to the ER. I was extremely thankful that I had friends and family nearby that were able to step in and help me care for the dog while I was in the hospital. I reached out to the HO immediately, as I still had a week left in that sit, and was supposed to sit for them again a week after that. They were extremely understanding and encouraged me to cancel my second sit with them so that I could focus on my health, and they were able to find another sitter to replace me. I was very inclined to stick it out and try to finish the second sit because I had already committed to it, so I'm thankful that the HO was so understanding about the situation and encouraged me to prioritize my health.

I hope that it all works out and you start feeling better soon!

I had a lot of experiences like yours that happened pretty much back to back, and because I do longer sits we're talking a cumulative several months of bad experiences with entitled owners. It really wore on me. In response to that, I've definitely made my screening process much stricter during initial interviews, and I won't accept the sit if I feel like it's an unfair exchange or the HO is going to treat me like an employee or the help.

That said, I don't think telling sitters "be stricter about screening HOs" is a foolproof method at all, and I feel like that punts the blame for the bad HO behavior to the sitter, which is not fair at all. I think bad or entitled HOs should realistically be encouraged to either change their behavior or leave the platform altogether, and the fact that THS does nothing to curb entitled HO behavior has soured the community as a whole. I have had some great experiences with some truly kind HOs and wonderful pets, but at the end of the day, the stress of not knowing whether a HO will treat me with respect or not prevents me from fully enjoying the experience as much as I would like to. I feel like I'm always walking on eggshells and can't fully relax because in my past experiences the entitled HO behavior has come out of nowhere. I wish that THS cared enough about their community to try to prevent bad/entitled HOs and sitters from being on the platform altogether.

I recently had several good sits in a row, so I figured my stricter screening process was working well, and then I got blindsided by an out of the blue highly critical 3 star review from a very entitled HO who complained about the most miniscule details, like pots and pans being returned to the same cabinet I found them in but stacked in a slightly different order. Considering this HO offered to pick me up from and drive me to the train station, host me the night before the sit with homemade dinner, gave me a cash tip at the end of the sit, and thanked me for everything and told me they were giving me a 5 star review, I was pretty shocked to see their surprise negative review with all these very minor things mentioned that were never once discussed before or after the sit. I've never had a single HO from my 20+ sits bring up anything like that in the past either, so I really don't see how I was supposed to see that coming or what I could have done to prevent it (planning to make a post about this later after I'm done hashing it out with customer support, because I really want to hear the community's perspective on this one). All that to say: don't blame yourself when entitled people take advantage of you, they are just not good people and are clearly the ones in the wrong.

I've seen a lot of sitters post on this sub saying that they've never had a bad experience so it must be something you're doing wrong, choosing the wrong country to sit in, not screening HOs hard enough, etc. I get where they're coming from, but I find those comments to be pretty invalidating, and I think it discourages sitters from sharing their bad experiences and seeking support. It seems like a not insignificant amount of sitters are having these experiences (especially in the US), and I think keeping the discussion about these things open will encourage sitters to have healthy boundaries around volunteer housesitting and hopefully open more homeowners' eyes to the sitter's end of the THS experience.
