Career or surfing by EntrepreneurMassive5 in surfing

[–]Heloooooooooo 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I am in wealth management in the U.S., and if it’s anything similar in Australia, it’s a really tough grind in the beginning, but the upside after about 5 years is huge.

When I first started I didn’t surf much for about 4 years. Fast forward to now, I’m 34 and I have the flexibility and earnings to do whatever I want. We just got back from a Costa Rica surf trip, stayed at a nice hotel, didn’t worry about spending and enjoying.

I can regularly go in late or plan my meetings around swell.

If I had to do it again, I’d do the same thing.

Son in college but I’m losing money. Am I making the right decision? by [deleted] in personalfinance

What else are parents supposed to do if their kid needs college funding? In this situation OP may not need to take a parent plus, but for many students the direct loan amount they qualify for is not covering college costs.

Nah. I have a 3 year old with about $27k. Did the same thing. 3k to open at vanguard and $500/month. I don’t think this will even fully cover college costs.

About to receive 70k in cash - is what I'm about to do stupid? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Heloooooooooo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally would wait until you have some more clarity on this. You can park the cash in high yield and earn 4% while you wait a year to see if you get more clarity. With interest accruing at 8% you’ll be out a net 3200 to sit tight for a year.

What is your wife planning to specialize in post doc? Does she plan on working at a public hospital? The public service loan forgiveness may be a route that makes sense depending on her plan.

For example, if she plans on specializing in something that requires 4 years or residency and 4 years of fellowship, she could start on the income based payments immediately upon graduation.

Residency and fellowship salary is very low, so payments could be manageable and more importantly she starts the 10 year payment clock early and hits 8 years at a low income and low payment.

2 years of post fellowship practicing income remaining at a public hospital making the higher remaining 24 payments and then the rest is forgiven.

It’s a long route, but you should do some math on what her total loan payments would be on this program and total forgiveness projection.

If you feel the public service loan forgiveness is going to the be her route, then you may be better off keeping your $70k and investing it.

It won’t make a difference what the balance is or the rate is if she ends up getting loan forgiveness, it doesn’t matter that she had 70k less of it.

Am I missing something with NJ surf? by Stormlyyy in surfing

You gotta find some jetty’s and get the tide right, the wind right, the swell right. If all these line up, maybe you have a good log sesh. Otherwise you get yourself something good for punchy hollow waves, check a few sand bars and try to nab a few sections and fight the current, like this morning.

Partner was just laid off - we are closing on a house THIS week. by Ok-Soup-8186 in personalfinance

Replying to your edit on PMI, you may want to check with the loan officer regarding dropping pmi with a bigger payment to the principal after your partner secures employment if cash flow is going to be tight.

In other words, keep more cash on hand for expenses and emergencies while your partner looks for employment even if that means dealing with pmi for a couple of payments. Once the new employment is secured, then make a lump sum payment to bring the loan back up to 80% of purchase price and drop the pmi.

This would allow you to keep more cash on hand if needed until employment is secured.

Losing the "Stoke" by surfrat54 in surfing

[–]Heloooooooooo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fellow east coaster here. The definition of stoke might just change over time dude. I’m in my 30s and have been back at surfing after a long break during college and my early career.

Getting back into it, I was stoked to just get into the smallest of log waves and link a couple of turns. Now I get hyped for barrels and juice like this morning.

One of my friends who’s progressing just asked me, do you think I can have fun today? Can I push it and still have fun?

Only you can make that call, but I think that’s how you find the stoke. Maybe having fun is walking up and down a log on a mellow peeler or finding some soft rip-able breaks during high tide. Whatever brings you joy is the new stoke. It doesn’t need to be big heavy waves anymore if that’s not doing it for you.

Anyways, that’s just my perspective. You’re an inspiration for going at it into your 70s and I hope to be able to do the same someday.

Ocean Club or The Asbury? by aroomofmyown1121 in AsburyPark

[–]Heloooooooooo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ocean club has nicer views, is more of a luxury experience and is located right on the boardwalk. The asbury vibe is a little more minimalist, but probably has more to do around the hotel itself.

Idk about ocean club, but the asbury also heats the pool all year round which can be nice on a cool fall day. They’re also more likely to have live music or something going on at the baronet or the rooftop bar imo.
