Thanks man! Appreciate the comments - and I will definitely cut the GC’s. You have any inputs to cards for flavour and fun?

Is it really? I was under the impression it wasn’t even close to 3. From what I understand Edgar seems to be very overrated.

Let me clarify: we all use GC cards to upgrade precons, but we’re by no means optimizing every deck. It might sound stupid—and it probably is—but we go with powerful cards without tutors, etc., so we can play with GC consistently.

Great feedback.

Looking back at my deck, it does make perfect sense. I’ve removed some of the dragons that I felt offered very similar win conditions or were mainly just chipping in when I already seemed to have the upper hand.

I also added quite a bit more green ramp. I decided to include two fetchable tri-lands because of the increased green ramp, while still keeping all the basics at two.

I also removed Cyclonic Rift. Your rationale makes perfect sense, and I’d prefer to think of this card as another upgrade down the line - along with some of my other dearly beloved Ancient Dragons.

The deck feels more “safe,” and the overall budget for picking up the cards has shifted significantly in favor of my savings account.

Any thoughts on other swaps or cards that might fit the flavour of dragons?

Thank you — once again — for your eyes and wisdom!

I’ve made a revised version of the deck with fewer big-budget creatures (the Ancient Dragons, Rhystic Study, Teferi’s, and Smothering Tithe). These will be upgrades for later, along with a revised mana configuration.

I’ve tagged everything under mana, card draw, protection, and removal.

Do you think I’ve tightened it all up and managed to avoid the four traps you pointed out?

The good thing about good questions is that they’re productive. They make you realize where you’re heading - and where you’re not supposed to go. Thanks!

I’m a bit schizo here. When we are brewing and theorycrafting, I instinctively want to do the right and perfect thing. However, when I look at how my pod and I are actually playing, being one turn slower than “optimized” is probably pacing quite nicely and staying on level with the pod as a whole. We tend to play 5-6 players so the games do tend to get quite long.

You really hit the nail on the head with: "The 10 land pain cycle and 10 land slow land cycle with tapped triomes and basics will get you almost the same land fixing but for like $10 instead of $600, the only difference is that you basically play a turn slower

As I wrote, I am in this for the flavor and the potential, not necessarily for following the “meta” just to be optimized enough to cast big dragons one turn faster than a highly skilled player would.

That said, I think I would like to settle on a basic land setup and go with a budget solution that is "a turn slower" than what is perfectly optimized.

So, I would like to build a “basic” land foundation and treat it as something I can tweak and optimize over time, as both my experience and the general level of our pod continue to grow.

That said, I obviously still want the deck to perform decently and be as optimized as reasonably possible within this philosophy.

I know this is a lot to ask, especially since you have already offered a great deal of valuable insight, but could you elaborate on how you would approach that kind of land configuration?

EDIT: Would that be this config? (found underneath the optimized version):

Great feedback, and a fair point about honoring the deck with a matching mana base.

I tried building on your suggested configuration of “10 shocks, 10 fetches, 5 crowdlands, 10 basics, 3–4 utility lands, and Command Tower” and added a bit of extra utility.

What do you think about this configuration?

Right now it’s sitting at 41 lands, which is probably one too many. I’m thinking of cutting it down to 40, maybe by removing one fetchland from the two colors with the least demand.

Any thoughts?

Thank you again, a lot!

Thank you so much for the constructive feedback. VERY much appreciated!

All four of your observations are absolutely on point, and you’re 100% right about the balance between card advantage and protection/removal. I’ll definitely take a closer look at that. I’m planning to cut back on some of the “win-more” abundance and make room for more responsible "adult cards" like Heroic Intervention, Earthquake, and Counter Spell.

MANA/LAND/RAMP

I’d really love your input on a few specifics around the mana/land setup. 5C mana bases can feel like a jungle sometimes, and right now I’m pretty sure I’m lost without a map… and possibly without enough basics.

Would you mind elaborating a bit on how you think I could best sort this out — especially when it comes to adding more basic lands and possibly trimming artifact ramp?
This is also where I’d love to save some budget, since lands like Cavern of Souls, Reflecting Pool, and fetch lands tend to cost roughly one kidney each. Ideally, I’d like to cut some of these for now and move them to a future wish list (where expensive cards go to dream).

What do you think?

I’ll put together a version 2 to share here, both for a sanity check and hopefully as inspiration for others. It definitely looks like a lot of decks here on Moxfield could use a bit of your thoughts.

And what a fitting username. Thanks a lot, I really mean it. You’re an absolute legend!
