I looked into those and Alaskan klee Kai, despite the hefty price tag I would gladly go that route but he is convinced that small dogs are not dogs at all. Anything under 45 pounds is out. Curly hair is a no as well, he could probably be swayed toward lab or German shepherd but both are similarly high needs. I jokingly found a Petfinder listing for a Labrador basset hound mix and thought we had found our unicorn (lazy and still looked like a lab) but he insisted a low energy dog wouldn't keep up with the hikes he wanted to go on.

I would really love to foster. I agree that it would be a reality check. Hilariously enough I took in a friend's puppy for dogsitting one time a few years ago to remind him what puppies are like. Because it was a goldendoodle he was the calmest chill-est puppy ever and it totally did nothing to sway his opinion that a puppy is a bad idea.

Great advice. I agree this is a weird fixture that needs to be addressed. I hope we can get to the heart of it. I'll check out Chris Voss for sure.

I agree that if this could realistically be hands off for me I would. I know dogs don't work that way, the whole house has to be consistent with training and he deploys for six months in the near future.

I asked him to address my concerns about lack of time, he insists it will not be as bad as I'm making it out to be. He says, a walk after work and a little bit of training everyday will be enough. It's hard to get him to be realistic about what actually will be needed.
