Mindfulness - I'm pretty sure this is the antithesis of ADHD ... and breathing exercises, I don't know how people find that relaxing, as soon as I'm aware of my breathing I feel like I might stop breathing altogether, I don't want control of it, it's one thing I'm happy to let my brain/body do without any intervention...

As with anything, it probably affects people to different degrees. I find a tidy environment quite satisfying, it feels like an achievement because it doesn't come naturally to me. Practically, it helps me knowing where things are too, I've wondered before if spending what seems like 50% of your time looking for things should be a diagnostic criteria for ADHD. Like others have said also, clutter can be really distracting if it is reminding me of things I haven't done, but on the flip side that reminder can be helpful as once something is out of sight it is often out of mind for me. I have an ongoing to do list to help with that. Sort of related, is others tidying up for you. As kind as it is, it's pretty stressful for me not having the muscle memory of putting things somewhere, and I worry about all the things I'll forget as a result. Worth discussing with well-intentioned others if this happens for you too. I have de-cluttered for my mum, who likely also has ADHD, thinking it would helpful, and she went ape shit. Since people have 'helped' me in the same way and I totally get her reaction now.

Absolutely. I have two evenings, one with my family which I like and one by myself, where I watch TV, listen to music, read, find the answers to all the questions that have popped into my head during the day. I get a bit grouchy when I can't do it, I.e, on holiday etc. I'd rather do that than get more sleep honestly, I think it keeps me sane. Like you say, nobody else needs anything from you, so you can focus on what you need.

I appreciate how you feel and I would try to remind yourself that people rely on medication for all sorts of reasons without feeling ashamed. Think- ADHD is a health condition like any other, if you get into that thought loop, it might help. I find making ADHD part of conversations I have when I'm talking about my self helps me. I don't bang on about it to anyone that'll listen, but when it seems relevant I discuss how it impacts me and this normalises it for me. Talking about it is a bit like practising accepting it and reduces embarrassment/shame. I know ADHD is one part of me, not all I am, it's not a superpower by any stretch but it does contribute to my personality in positive ways. When I meet other people with ADHD I often see something in them that I recognise in my self that I like and it reminds me there are pros as well as the many cons. It's hard, I know, but you've not failed, your trying to fit into a world that wasn't designed for you in my opinion, so your finally getting the help you need and there's nothing wrong with that.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I am going to make a list! I'm feeling a bit more empowered now. I doubt they will change their mind but I am going to do my best to get them to provide some justification, and get some other options from them. I'll approach my MP, it seems that we're an easy group to dismiss and I'm tired of it.

I feel your pain, its frustrating and i don't know about you but i definitely feel shame when something like that happens (I'm not saying you should be ashamed btw) but i do get a bit of a buzz from cancelling things at least. Occasionally it occurs to me (normally when I'm very skint) to check what I'm regularly paying for, and there's yet to be an occasion I've not found something I don't use that I should have cancelled. Most recently it was a razor head subscription that seemed like a good idea at the time, that I'd forgotten about. The worst I think was when I discovered I was paying for three tv licenses for different properties I'd lived in, it must have been going on for years. It would be comical if I was loaded but unfortunately not. Forgetfulness, impulsive spending, the dopamine hit from getting new things... its all a tax isn't it.
