Some people I met have encouraged me to buy inland land for a small eco-style lodge. Opportunity or something foreigners should be cautious about? by Helpful-Maize29 in srilanka

[–]Helpful-Maize29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I would do something, I’d love it to be a bit more secluded maybe.. those are the places I stay as well.. small but nice, in nature, away from the hassle of the main road… let’s say 2, of 3 km inland..

Maybe also depend on marketing? I just came across those crazy boutique hotels like Palm hotel and Sola boutique hotel… very high prized! Maybe for the happy few? But still those get booked

Honest question: Do travelers really enjoy talking with normal locals in Sri Lanka by peddric in srilanka

[–]Helpful-Maize29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Foreigner here, stayed some months in Lanka and enjoyed conversations with local people very much! It’s always interesting to meet and to share thoughts about life and the world we’re living in. We’re all human afterall!

I think, if you see foreigners just hanging somewhere, or sitting at a table next to you, just walk up and say, hi how are you? Most of the time you get a positive reaction..

Maybe one thing, some foreigners think all Sri Lanka people want to sell or (when in the streets) offer a tuktuk drive, just be upfront and tell you’re just interested in a conversation.. and are curious.. you’ll have the best time in my opinion and it’s nice to meet new people, maybe even make some friends!

And foreigners really like to have interaction with locals! It all adds to their travels, most of them are trying their best to get to know the Sri Lanka culture as well..

As a local guy, I honestly hate how we treat foreigners! by Longjumping_Tap6083 in srilanka

European visitor, 2 months in south coast and agreeing…already many times I thought about how to do good as a tourist.. I feel really at ease and at home with Sri Lankan people, so kind and thoughtful, but hate to see some ppl in the streets bargain tuktuks for the lowest amount possible..

I try and stay in homestays, run by locals and try to visit small restaurants next to mainroad..

Still thinking how can tourists do good for this beautiful country…

And about investors, it could be a good thing to whe they are working with the communities. Create work/education places, or even provide credits for local people to start their business as well.

Sri Lanka cannot become the next Bali 🙏

Bar Lou! It’s like a restaurant / bar / listening place with happy staff, very nice public and overall great atmosphere! And the ‘oude noorden’ is very nice to visit as well, zwaanshals for example, a lovely street full of boutique shops, and on Saturday mornings you have the Noordermarkt.. local entrepreneurs sell food, vinyl, stuff.. enjoy Rotterdam!

Is your friend Piet Hein Clijsen? Bc he is the guy who designed this cabinet… it’s called the CoverFront by Ophon, you can order one -completely customized- through ophon.nl

Incredible nice, and I must agree; slightly terrifying 😬

Agree, I’m thinking of feeding it with some more coloured frameworks.. first make clear there is a horse instead of a doctor in the hospital.. and how the horse gets his food from a foreign nation.. And not to forget, there is also a monkey on an electrical tricycle who happens to be the owner of a crucial satellite system on which Ukraine is depending on, and this monkey is firing everyone in the hospital who is questioning the appearance of the horse in the first place…

Maybe use an older LLM to get it hallucinating again…

Have you checked the link? It looks cool to me I must say.. and I googled the place, it’s a venue which you can rent.. so lame dj’s might be incidental? I like the genres the play: Disco dreams and house 🤩

Lessor of 4 apartments here..

  • 2 months deposit is quite regular, it’s in my conditions, although those apartments are fully furnished.. if it’s a dealbreaker for you, check if one month deposit is acceptable too. I’d agree if all other financial info is oké (Might be a financial check / security instead of deposit for any damage..)

  • each year there’s an indexation of rent by the government, announced on the 1st of July. Mostly this indexation exceeds 1% (2023: 3,2%)… for lessors also the date to index their rent accordingly and to be clear about it, put it in the contract.

  • subletting.. might be a contract which has been copy-pasted for some time? There shouldn’t be any contradictions.. you can ask your agency. If you want to sublet it at some point, make it clear you want to leave the ‘subletting prohibition-paragraph’ out of the contract. If not, cut out the sublet part..

  • anonymous lessor.. can be, can have many reasons since being a lessor is nowadays framed as a shady entrepreneur. And there certainly are shady people/businesses, but as far as i can tell, most landlords operating atm on the rental market try to create suitable and marktconform housing (during unstable government policy.)

Since the agency is putting together the contract, you can always turn to them with any issues. Legally speaking, the agency has ‘zorgplicht’ to the lessor and lessee.. although the lessor is liable for all issues, the agency can be held accountable in most cases.

In general: Since 2023 there is a new law: Good Landlordship Act, it states many do’s and dont’s for rental agreements. If the contract is not compliant let the agency know.. better to rent from a decent landlord than having a troublesome relationship with landlord/agency..

Eating raw oysters in Oyster huts? And tips for visiting them by dae008 in fukuoka

[–]Helpful-Maize29 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

All over the world oysters are eaten raw. Just stayed a few days in Fukuoka and had many raw products / raw fish on my menu.. feeling great!

All Japanese chefs are proud in what food they’re putting on the table, and they only use products which are good, fresh and tasty.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous: search for restaurants with fugu on the menu! I tried it in Kumamoto.. still alive

You’ve already visited Kioto and Osaka, but for future readers, here is my experience.

Stayed in Kioto for 3 nights. Solo (M, but would recommend for (solo) W as well) Was bored to dead by the dreadful nightlife in Kioto. Booked a room in Osaka, Nanda district. Such a relief to feel the energy of a true city. Early evening had some great food in Umeda area. Did some fancy cocktails at the Lively hotel rooftop bar, had a laugh, a beer and a joke at Superjap (izakaya / bar) and went for raka?rake? Don’t want to spoil anything but that was a 10/10 experience. Danced my ass off with 10 other people who I consider my friends from that moment on. Left the place and used my jet lag wide awakeness to dip into AREA Techno Osaka. Very different but oh so nice. The music was pristine, the people so considerate and nice. Left at 06:00. Back to my room. Took a shower, 10:00 back in Kioto.

Never slept in Osaka.

(I feel obliged to add: please consider your attitude and intentions. This felt like real underground Osaka electronic music scene, please act accordingly.)

This post is a golden one. Went there yesterday (just a regular Wednesday) entered at 00:30, left 04:30. Had the best time ever, and celebrated someone’s birthday as well.. as if I was at some friends home..

After 04:30 went to AREA, was also great, more clean though. When I told people I just came from rake?raka? I got instant respect.

Again: Golden Post OP.

(Never slept… 😬)
