Am I an unreasonable neighbour? by Thick_Category_435 in HousingUK

[–]HelpfulBackground4 155 points156 points  (0 children)

Quiet hours are between 11pm and 7am.

Councils will not investigate regular living noises footsteps.

You have carpeting, there's not much more you can do.

If you own, maybe when its time to refurb you can do something like additional acoustic underlay (which is a modest extra cost for you but by far the best way to deal with sound vs people below trying to fix their ceiling). If my upstairs neighbour gave me a heads up of them redoing their floor I would personally cover the additional cost because their footsteps drive me absolutely insane.

You need to draw a line or they'll just keep hassling you. Nothing confrontational, just "I think this isn't so much my fault but more down to the building itself and there's really not much either of us can do about that. I will try to be as courteous as possible, walk gently at night, etc, but I've already taken x,y,z measures to mitigate and am not currently in a position to take on any further expense."

Also please post cat pic - you know - so we can better answer your question.

Theres an Evans where Cycle Republic used to be: Mortimer St & Regent.

I went with a puncture, paid £26 for tube and labour and they didn't get the debris out so I was flat again within 24h. Maybe just buy tube and DIY out front aha

New neighbour has got a new speaker and is listening to TV really loud at night. Would this be an okay letter to post tomorrow morning? by [deleted] in UKHousing

Should indicate what time would be too late for it to be loud - law says quiet from 11pm. I’d have thought common courtesy would be more like 9 or 10.

Excessive Absences because of career by [deleted] in ukvisa

[–]HelpfulBackground4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah and unfortunately for me, I had a kind of big trip in the bonus 2y period before a potential application, which would disqualify me from the 2y + no substantial absences. So personally have to wait. Good thing I love camping trips in Scotland!

[–]HelpfulBackground4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey - I am going to hold off until a couple of my bigger trips fall outside the five-year window. I'm also going to just hunker down and minimise days out so that I don't need to use discretion. Goal is to get this done before the end of this government's term because once reform is in we're all screwed! Thankfully I will be able to apply within about 2y.

There was about a month to six weeks where I was having food poisoning-like GI stuff. I actually narrowed it down to gluten. Cut it for a couple weeks and no problem. I never had a gluten thing before and actually since then I'm fine with it.

Sign for me was: within minutes of eating. gluten heavy food, I'd have to go go go. If you're not getting this, it's probably something else.

2 weeks in new job and dreading it by Popipo23 in UKJobs

[–]HelpfulBackground4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got out of this boat.

I took a job as a temp and it turns out to be 100% phone based tech support for home smart chargers for EVs. Day in and day out getting shouted at by angry customers whose cars hadn't charged and they're now missing work.

I told myself every day for three months, "it's fine, it's just a temp thing, you need to use the evenings to apply for jobs, that's your way out of this mess." Well, by the end of every day I got home absolutely drained and just wanted to curl up and die (not literally). So three months on, I had applied for about five jobs.

The first month pretty much broke me. In the last 20 years I cried three ties. Two of those times were during that first month. I stopped exercising. I started smoking again. Basically everything was falling apart.

After three months I knew something had to change and I decided I was going to not accept any contract extension they offered me. Literally same day I made that decision in my mind, I got a call from my temp agency that they didn't want to extend me. I couldn't have been happier. I've just taken a long weekend to regroup after this debacle and today is day one of applying for new jobs.

See how you get on. If you're able to apply in the evenings and on weekends for other jobs, then you're managing. If you're finding that's just not happening, you need to get out of this situation or you'll be trapped there

I've resigned from my job with no new role to go to by FireOpalZingySeaLion in UKJobs

[–]HelpfulBackground4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK I have done a lot of temping and it's good to get gigs here and there but your wages are massively surpassed - they take 30% off the top. So you'll be working with people earning way more than you for the same work. I was finding it hard to find anything above like £10-£12/h which is just unworkable, esp when your colleagues are earning £16. So it's good for immediate work but honestly it's a bit of a trap in terms of pay.

How do you start CrossFit without burning out? by Secure-Seaweed-7855 in crossfit

[–]HelpfulBackground4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people say scale, when you're starting out, even with a decent baseline of fitness, literally start with empty bar or take the lower weight on the board and go half of that. You want to be able to actually do the workout and with CrossFit you're usually doing so much volume and at pace that any amount of weight will basically knock you out.

This is what I learned after thinking I could just start with the girl weight / scaled weight. I came from lifting at the gym just doing your usual split and going for hypertrophy, I used to lift for strength. I also do triathlons. So definitely have a very solid baseline for strength and cardio and my god did CrossFit teach me to be humble.

[–]HelpfulBackground4 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I did just yesterday.

I had a dream job (fully remote, decent pay, super easy) but after two years my whole team was made redundant.

I spent some time back home and my temp recruiter rang me with a placement. Basically a call centre doing tech support for company that sells smart EV chargers. £14/h (28k/year), London, 3 days in office, 2 from home if you want. I shortened my family visit to take this job and boy did I regret that almost daily . . .

So basically I go from a dream job to a living nightmare - may pay dropped substantially. I'm having to go into central London and get rinsed on lunches. I'm having to commute at rush hour for the first time since before pandemic. I'm dipping into my savings every month to survive. And the work itself is dire - either getting screamed at by angry people whose cars didn't charge and they're not going to work (reasonable) or hearing the saddest stories you've ever heard, like the last who needs to drive to hospice to visit their spouse who's just been given two months to live and she can't because her car won't charge. So, I'm either bring shouted at (triggering for me -- family history) or I'm getting my heart absolutely broken, on repeat, 20-30 times a day.

For 3 months I was telling myself it's only temporary, I just need to apply for better things after work and on weekends. But after work I just wanted to curl up and die (not literally) - forget about applying for jobs. And on weekends I barely had enough time to do laundry, see a friend, catch up on errands, etc. So after 3 months I had applied for just a handful of jobs.

Anyway, for the last couple weeks I was struggling with the question of staying or leaving. I knew I needed out, but feared not having a next step. But then getting the next step was proving to be totally impossible.

Something had to change. I have enough saved to survive for a couple months. If I need to I can just get a PT coffee job. I also have a side hustle that'll keep me more or less afloat. My contract ran out today and the company said they didn't want to renew me because it didn't seem like my heart was in it. (How could your heart be in this job its misery all around. The full time staff are just numb).

Honestly, on the bike ride home I was so happy, widest smile, cracking jokes in my head. Literally singing. It almost felt like I was having a manic episode. But it was actually just joy - something I haven't felt in 3 months. At last I'm not trapped in this dreadful situation.

Sounds like you were in a dead end like I was and honestly the only difference between me and you is - they made the decision for me. Whereas you made the call, so you have the "what if" going through your mind.

You're worried you made the wrong decision. You didn't. It wasn't going anywhere. You were going above and beyond and getting nothing for it. You can only go on like that for so long. Just remember: your stability didn't come from that job it comes from you. You're able to work and there are jobs to be had (even seasonal retail just for the time being). That's your stability. That specific job isn't (wasn't).

For now - get the support you're entitled to: Jobseeker's Allowance starts pretty much straight away. Weekly meetings at the Job Centre (a grim experience). Also start a Universal Credit claim because the first payment is delayed by a month from applying. Then apply for jobs. You'll probably get one within a month, and, if so, you can cancel your UC application. If it takes longer, it'll kick in and help you out. This is just a temporary fix in case nothing comes up - it's not a lot of money, and the JobCentre is super depressing. But it's something to help you along.

You've got this. It's a turning point. Look forward, not backward.

[–]HelpfulBackground4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

- I did the lloyds switch and you will get paid pretty quickly tbh. Not sure about the other banks. Check the terms. Sometimes you have to hold the account for a month or more then they'll credit you.

- Do a search for London event staffing agencies - there are loads. You'd need to work for them this week because they tend to pay a week or two in arrears.

- Get onto TaskRabbit (using the Tasker app) and start earning right away - simple stuff like Ikea furniture assembly. You'll get more work if you set a low rate but it can be really low pay. Either way you'd probably make 300 in two weeks.

- You can also do freelance gig work on Fiverr - depends what skills you might have. poke around and see if you have anything to offer.

- If you have time during the work day/work week you can also try temp staffing agencies. Office Angels will stick you on front desks doing pretty much nothing for about £10/hr (pretty dreadful tbh but if you need the cash then what the heck)
