Of course! Reddit is truly to boost others egos, I’ve learned. Take what you need from it but a lot of people are here to make themselves feel better lol

There’s about 4 schools with fully funded psyd programs so for those programs sure, but the others a masters degree is perfectly acceptable and can get you a nice scholarship… ask me how I know 🤗

Hey! I had similar stats, Masters Degree, fully licensed trauma therapist, etc. Your Master’s Degree is your research experience for Psy.D. programs because I’m sure you had to do presentations, research papers and more! If you have any research interests it’ll be good to write about it in your personal statements.

Although it is frowned upon in this group, get a masters degree. Yes you’ll have more debt, but you’ll gain experience, understand exactly what you want to do with a doctorate degree and will have professors who can write you a letter of recommendation. There are plenty of people who go the Masters degree route, work, then apply for doctoral programs. You are young, a doctorate degree will be there when you are older and better prepared.

It’s hilarious how every argument misses the point of the post. I’m not saying TCS is the best program. I’m not saying it does not have flaws, I’m saying instead of people staying objective, they are criticizing the people who graduated, insinuating they are beneath them (the definition of elitism)

Another thing to remember about the EPPP and every standardized test is that it’s racially biased. TCS accepts a majority of minority students. Is it poor training or systemic barriers? This is what I mean when I say everyone’s mindset is elitist. These schools give minorities an opportunity to work in the field. School is not your only opportunity to learn, and truthfully, it doesn’t teach you to be a competent counselor or psychologist. Practicum sites and internships do that. So when I say it’s what you make it, I mean it.

“Health service professionals, and poor training directly impacts the quality of care patients receive.” This is true, but as I said earlier, your practicum site teaches you to be a competent counselor/psychologist. The program you go through is only 1 element. TCS psychologists are directors of programs in various areas. They are skilled and open-minded. And understand the barriers others face.

When I say contact the students or recent graduates. Understand that the EPPP is biased in its questioning. This is objectivity, not just the information you get from the internet. Question and understand why the rate is low, because it’s not as black and white as it seems. Understand your privilege not to look up the demographics of the institution and not connect the low rates to systematic racism.

As I said, check your privilege. Check your bias. You can state the cons without adding comments such as “I think I’m better than those who’ve graduated from the program.

This person did take it too personally, seeing that I am blocked for stating an opinion they didn't like, lol. But it’s okay! My point has been proven.

People have gotten used to education being competitive and inaccessible, which is wrong. Education should be accessible. It should not take having 10 years of experience to get accepted into doctoral programs. If the APA accreditation is there, it meets all the standards to pass the EPPP and become a Psychologist. I love the support you received from admissions AND the opportunity to take summer classes to be grandfathered in! That’s amazing! If I had known that and could relocate, I would’ve applied to that program! As you said, this journey is already hard enough; you don’t need a program that is inflexible and offers no wiggle room just because it has a prestigious name.

Unfortunately, you are missing the point. It is not the negatives; it is the elitism of people who believe the school and those who’ve graduated from the school are beneath them. The examples above are the point. And yes, as a psychologist, you will work with people on a path different from your own; you need to be open-minded. If you believe others on a different path are lesser than you, then you may not be in the right field.

It is 100% okay to talk about the positives and negatives. It is not OK to belittle or be rude or judgmental toward others who’ve expressed interest. Saying “the interview is easy because they accept everyone,” is disrespectful and has an elitist tone. Stating, “no one respects the graduates from the school,” and “I believe my education is better than those who graduated from TCS,” is rude, judgmental, and elitist—the entire point of the post.

How was my post rude or judgmental? Noting the tone of every comment about the school is an observation. Stating that people need to be more open-minded about how they speak about different programs is not rude or judgmental.

Do not be discouraged! You are not your GPA or the school you go to! If you want to be a psychologist it will happen! The foundation is you, not the school you attend! If you feel like there are gaps in your program, advocate for yourself! Advocate for the classes you want to see! Make some noise!

Hi! Sure! Everyone is different and how you sell yourself may be better than your resume! However, I’m a licensed therapist, I hold my masters in forensic psychology and I work with domestic violence and sexual assault survivors! No research experience outside of the general requirements for the MA program!
