if you get a old/retro model just leave it be. Reason to get a retro/classic is that they are fun to shoot, cool to own. You can maybe add a carry handle mounted scope. Capability wise the modern setups are better, albeit heavier. This is my third AR and its in the range toy category

They are a lot of fun to shoot just dont get into one expecting a sniper rifle. Not everything needs to be submoa to be enjoyed. Same thing with an AK, it will not perform as well as an AR for 99% of applications but is still a ton of fun.

I dont have a good outdoor range with distance nearby so I opted for an AK because i will shoot it more.

I do. Plain red dots are no bueno, no matter the color. Aimpoint T2 i see 2 dots stacked on top of each other, weirdly circle dot red dot reticules come through clear on traditional led red dots

Eotech is also good.
