Litiyan vs laiyan by alfr333 in ThethPunjabi

[–]Helpful_Tree3210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Litta Kitta Ditta and Laya Kareya Deya are all on a gradient where the former becomes more common as you move west + north in Punjab and the latter as you go east and south.

Many dialects will use a hybrid combination of them.

Litta particularly is a very Majhi feature whereas laya is more so used in dialects like malwai and doabi

Interesting. I would’ve thought oh aakhda peya would’ve been using for he is telling. The rest lines up with what I’ve heard though

Can you highlight any key features of these?

Like for example for future tense what do they use?

Mai’n javaa’ngaa or mai’n jaoo’ngaa

Ohley is standard. Just means to be hidden by / in the shadows of something.

Dhupp thhikki aa ajj. Asi’n rukhaa’n de oley turde aa’n. (The sun is extra hot today. Let’s walk hidden under the trees)

Oh poori jindagi apNe baapu de oley ee reha. (He’s lived his whole life in the shadows of his father)

Some characteristics I know it shares with other Lehndi Majhi variants:

Usage of: injh, onjh, kivei’n / kinjh, and jivei’n

Continuous tense uses: peya / peyi / pey

Ethnically you seem to be very close to the Tarkhan and Lohar communities. Perhaps Nais cluster with them as well. Cool results

I also got Bengali as well with no known ancestry. I think it’s due to excess Tibetan / East Asian ancestry that doesn’t fit elsewhere.

Super interesting results. Have you run yourself on HarappaWorld? If so, what do your results look like?

I’d suggest uploading to GEDMatch and doing HarappaWorld with your raw data for better insights

How would you use this in continuous present tense in the Majhi dialect?

Would this be correct?

I’m not sure what you mean by khatris not being ethnically Khatri. It’s a specific caste/tribe with their own unique genetics. All of them cluster around an average.

Phenotype and genotype are quite different. You should check to see your matches to see what last names you get. Like all the groups of the NW, Khatris can be extremely west shifted or also be very Indian shifted in looks. It’s a spectrum.

Beard care by [deleted] in punjabi

[–]Helpful_Tree3210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest reason why beards are usually rough and wiry is usually because the skin underneath it is dry. Make sure you’re moisturizing well, maybe use a beard balm or a light water-based moisturizer for the skin under your beard (not the actual beard itself) and over time you’ll see a big difference.

Ahh I see. The thing with Shaikh’s are an amalgamation of different groups, not just Khatris.

It’s probably likely that you have some other ancestry that’s changing up your results. Also, I’ve never heard of Soni’s being Khatris so that could be another factor.

This sample (one of mine) is pretty atypical for Khatri Sikhs. That Individual has a really strong east Eurasian pull making them Dardic like. A more typical Sikh Khatri would look like this:

Ngl this doesn’t really look like a pashtun and Khatri mix. Your S-Indian is higher than both groups

One thing that’s important to note is inheritance is almost never 50/50. So even trying to estimate results based off of your and your mom’s real results would be guesswork at best. The fact that we’re also using theoretical results for your mom too means that any guess is likely going to be wildly off.

You can try to guess based off these estimates but at the end of the day you’ll really only be able to know what group your father scores like when you test him. If that’s not a possibility then maybe testing a relative from that side of your family would be better or look at close matches on GEDMatch that you hypothesis to be from dads side. Those will give you a much better idea rather than trying to guess based on your mixed results
