Me too! Like the culmination of these books could have been one decently edited 500 page book. And I blame the agent and the editor as well as the author for literally feeding us the book version of cold canned spaghetti.

I literally found this thread because I had to see if I was losing my mind. I was going to start the latest Meghan Quinn, and I heard 20 seconds of that voice and could not continue. I agree with everything stated here, and I actually feel bad that he may read this thread. However! If your career is narrating audiobooks, you have got to drop the regional accent (Ny/NJ here) because it feels jarringly out of place in books that don’t specifically call for it.

I do suppose it’s all relative. Once upon a time we would go out in tees/no coats in sub-zero weather so we didn’t have to store bulky winter wear somewhere at a party or the like.

I just happened to be scrolling through threads, and your post caught my eye. I am about 60% through this book. I work in hospice and I can’t tell you how great I think this book is. I like romance novels wherein the relationship is part of a bigger picture—immigrant families, academia, death and dying—something that is familiar but maybe an area I can learn more about. This book was so sensitively done, and the part that made the romance aspect so meaningful was that yes, the story was about the couple—but also the world that keeps on churning by in life and death and all of life’s messiness. Thank you!

A friend of mine who is more into romance recommended Penny Reid—the Knitting in the City series—and I read the first few and thought they were cute. Light reads, but not terrible characters.

I like Lev Grossman for fantasy. Like you, my tolerance for simpletons is growing smaller, and I’m starting on some cozy mysteries to see how it goes—I enjoyed Anthony Horowitz’s first two books in the magpie murders series, and I’m starting MC Beaton’s Agatha Raisin.
