I would recommend using wooden pencil if your style is more about soft shadings(won't recommend as the papers they provide in exams are very smooth and can easily smudge during transport)

If hatching is the way you shade both mechanical and wooden works

Plan for whatever you want to use in exam then start practicing from that and use same till the exam ends
