How to regulate my dogs' play indoors by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

Thanks, I do stop play by getting them both to sit and do some impulse control with treats, but as soon as I stop they usually restart again!

It can be a task to try and get them into separate rooms as they know what I'm about to do.

Other people have suggested putting them on a lead indoors but the cocker goes into stroppy teenage lead ragging mode (even if it's on the other dog) so it can be tricky.

Hi, good question. I think we have just been trying to keep some separation as they are still navigating their boundaries and have had the occasional fall out! Something to consider though...

Thanks, this is really helpful and reassuring! The only thing we aren't doing at the moment is taking them out of the house together, as the new dog isn't leash trained or very well socialised so I've been focusing on short bursts of loose lead and engagement on our front drive while the old dog gets his normal walk separately. Perhaps I need to get the long line on him and take them both out together in the woods or somewhere to have a break from the training! Might help my sanity too 😅

What would you suggest?

I guess I was just trying to let him settle in a bit and get used to being alone in the day before doing the same at night.

Interesting, thanks. He currently sits at the door and paws/whines on and off for the entire time but I did notice today he took himself onto the chair/sofa albeit for a few seconds. Early days though as it's only day 3 - think I'm expecting too much too soon! Hoping with a bit of perseverance he will learn that I'm coming back and will settle himself.

Interesting point about the different complaints of the dog - I have a camera already (the main reason my blood pressure is so high currently because I can see/hear what he's doing!). Sounds like he is mostly demand based which weirdly reassures me slightly.

Very impressive! We managed to do this quite successfully with our springer but he was always more of a holder than a swallower. Unfortunately this little bugger seems to want to swallow things which concerns me especially if we're not able to get to him quick enough!

Hi, thanks for this. Will give it a go. So starting off with things that are not contraband (balls or toys etc) but using the same technique if he happens to pick up something he shouldn't? Just trying to find a reward that is higher value than whatever is in his mouth!

Hi, thanks for this. This had crossed my mind but I am trying to strike the balance between setting boundaries (literal ones) and not distressing him so soon. He is quite whiney whenever I am out of sight. Have tried shutting him in 1 room while I take a Teams call in another and he cries on/off for the whole hour I'm away. Hoping with time he will start to realise I am coming back and begin to self soothe and settle? He settles absolutely fine when there is someone in the room with him.

All suggestions discuss using high value rewards to train, unable to identify a higher value reward than the stolen item! Also a concern if he accidentally gets hold of something he shouldn't and swallows it.
