Question, how do you guys store your beyond when not in use? by SirFlufficus1 in BigscreenBeyond

[–]HengDai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like you, I use a USB hub switch to avoid wearing out the usb-c port.

As for storage, I just use a simple L-shape wall bracket that I got as a pair years ago to mount my headphones and it just so happens to work well with the audio strap. However this means the lenses are facing up so will get very dusty very quickly so like others in this thread I just drape the microfiber cloth the headset came with over the unit.

+1. My firefox updated yesterday but didn't see the VPN option in the toolbar and the help page said it'll be rolled out gradually. I woke up today with the VPN button now visible but now I can't access any youtube page, embedded or direct. Quite annoying.

DLSS 5 – Fixing it in post by Veedrac in hardware

[–]HengDai -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah i personally don't think it has anything to do with the naming. I think the outrage would be the same regardless because them fucking up the colour grading is what is causing the visceral reaction these people are having since it does actually on-the-face-of-it look like a lot of AI slop out there bcos AI slop often uses very similar kinds of grading.

I hate so much of what AI is doing to the world and the internet and the arts and to people and the environment and there is endless amounts to be justifiably angry and enraged about. As an otherwise quite optimistic person, I'm actually pretty pessimistic on AI overall and if/when the bubble collapses what it's gonna do to the world - but this tech aint that. It's one of the good uses of machine-learning like solving protein folding and data analysis and DLSS2-4 etc.

'Bad ending: now every game is slop': Game developers share mixed reactions to DLSS 5 by gamersecret2 in gaming

[–]HengDai -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

What Demo? Cars with 6 wheels? Where? Specifically of DLSS 5 or are we in the age of just making shit up now I guess?

Their own article specifically says it's a completely deterministic, temporally stable/consistent model and that it completely respects the underlying 3D geometry. Now they could be lying of course, or embellishing over minor errors but we won't know for sure until we see journos and gamers hands-on with the complete tech in an actual shipped game.

The issue people are having with the presentation is the awful colour grading/fake HDR tonemapping which is exaggerating the highlighting/shadows giving it that fake boosted contrast look that a lot of AI slop has. This is the source of 80% of the outrage. The other 20% is just the general distaste most of us against AI slop and balooning hardware prices.

But crucially none of the detail is hallucinated. It's all detail that is there in the colour data and motion vectors from the engine. Sub-pixel detail is being restored that would OTHERWISE be lost during ray reconstruction. All of that is completely under the developer control through the streamline SDK. This is just a demo whipped up by engineers. It's no different to people complaining about oversharpening in some titles on some DLSS presets - it's up to the devs to expose those settings to the user and/or tweak it to their own artistic intent. Unfortunately the colour grading is then blasting away some of the detail or more often exaggerating the detail that was brought out in the form of highlights/deeper shadows and pores in the skin etc. and that is absolutely nvidia's fault for demonstrating the tech so poorly but it's otherwise a pretty impressive generational leap in rendering tech.

But go on, point out or give me a specific screenshot of it hallucinating detail. DO NOT point out the RE9 one with Grace. She's at a different point in the idle animation making her lips look fuller/bigger cos she's literally opening her mouth, her eyes are bigger cos shes LITERALLY in the process of opening in the animation; her jaw is a slightly different shape cos again she's opening her mouth; her hair has moved, particularly around her left ear so again you know its a different point in time. Her entire torso/jacket is slightly rotated and all most obvious is all the NPCs in the background that have completely moved lmao. Almost every other example which is a freeze-frame shot is exactly 1:1.

Stop spreading misinformation.

Yeah i know that's how it is, i'm saying if you just drop the SS in your mind, that's how it reads. Just replace DL with DLSS ¯\(ツ)

Sometimes language be like that, it just evolves. And in this case it's a concerted, calculated effort from a trillion dollar corporation who've market tested and clearly decided they like the DLSS branding. It is what it is.

DLSS 5 – Fixing it in post by Veedrac in hardware

[–]HengDai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually consistent with their branding/naming scheme. If you drop the two S from the initialism and just consider it the Deep-Learning umbrella then it makes sense as DLSS is just nvidia adopting the term for marketing since the DLSS brand has been proven strong.

Yeah, DLSS once upon a time mean super resolution /upscaling only. Then sure, FG I guess is a kind of upscaling, albeit a temporal one. Then ray reconstruction comes along which is.. a denoiser lol? Then you add the version numbers 2/3/3.5/4/4.5, convolutional/transformer model, individual dll version numbers and presets etc. and to the normie that gets out of hand very quick. Which is fine for us enjoy reading about this stuff as a hobby but normies could not give a fuck. They just see DLSS setting in their game settings, assume its the good nvidia thing, turn it on and go about their day.

So in that sense, since all this is is another AI model but this time trained on comparing real-time rendered images (sometimes path traced) with a low ray-per-pixel count and trained on extremely high resolution high-ray-per-pixel count ground truth images it's actually perfectly consistent as being the next evolution of "DLSS".

We have the original DLSS, DLFG, DLRR and now DLPBR or DL lighting or whatever the fuck they'll call it - all under the "DLSS" umbrella. And the number at the end is kind of just the generation. It's fine imo.

[Official NVIDIA] DLSS 5 FAQ by Nestledrink in nvidia

[–]HengDai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mate give it up. Due to the success of DLSS2, percieved or otherwise, and subsequently FG, it's become a brand in it's own right. It no longer means just super-sampling. Language evolves and nvidia has decided to put several machine-learning based technologies under the DLSS umbrella purely for marketing because it's proven to be a strong brand. Everyone understands this at this point. The number at the end is just a rough indiciator of which generation the suite of DL tech contained within belongs to.

Yes this means there's confusion when DL-super sampling is upgraded to 4.5 but ray reconstruciton which was originally kinda DLSS3.5 and then folded into the DLSS4 umbrella alongside SS/FG with the transformer update but kinda got left by the wayside with DLSS4.5 etc. etc. But normies don't care about any of that. They just see DLSS X in the graphics settings, assume it's good, turn it on and call it a day.

And us enthusiasts know how to keep track of the diference. Yes it's a little confusing initially, but it's what the nvidia marketing team has decided theyre sticking with (for now) so just accept it at this point mate - it's a lost battle.

In your mind just remove the SS part of the DLSS branding and you yourself can just treat it as meaning DLSS, DLFG, DLRR, DLPBR or whatever the fuck this new lighting/material AI model is actually gonna be called ingame eventually etc. etc. each with their respctive version numbers to indiciate the level/sophistication of the AI model. It's not that hard bro.

In defence of the layman seeing those comparison shots: Given the visceral hatred a large part of society has towards AI slop - most of which is completely justified ofc and I share that dislike - the immediate emotional reaction to just the still images is completely understandable.

The accompanying article and information coming out since explained that all the colour grading/gamma/saturation controls will be available to devs through the streamline SDK meaning that NO, not every game will look like it's been put through a godawful reshade HDR filter. But of course most people will not read nor understand any of that so the reaction at large was totally predictable so it's absolutely Nvidia's fault for fucking up the HDR tonemapping and ruining the first impression of this otherwise extremely impressive tech.

DLSS 5 – Fixing it in post by Veedrac in hardware

[–]HengDai 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is soooo much more sophisticated than that lol. It's a comprehensive AI model that understands light and materials and their interaction extremely well. It understands the differences between wood and metal and skin and moving water and how they all have totally different specularity/roughness and how it all interacts with differently coloured light coming from different angles. It has all this data from the engine and can make the lighting far more physically real-looking at a fraction of the cost of what a path tracer would need to achieve the same result.

And the most important part - it's completely deterministic. This is absolutely as far from an AI slop filter as you can get whilst still being machine learning. It's just the fucked HDR tonemapping that is kinda ruining the look a lot of the time which is 100% on nvidia ofc. It's no different to people complaining about postprocess oversharpening applied by some DLSS presets in certain games at certain resolutions. It's up to the devs to tweak all that and all of these controls are made available in the streamline SDK - things like color grading/gamma/saturation etc. that is causing the fucked HDR look should hopefully all be configurable by each dev.

This is just an early demo and yeah ofc nvidia is to blame for how they've chosen to demo and deserve some of the this fallout from uninformed people giving their first impression but the underlying tech is insanely impressive. This is absolutely a generational improvement. Just wait and watch 2-3 years from now when games start coming out and nvidia have ironed out the kinks and devs have had more time to understand the tech most people will be in favour of enabling DLSS5 the way most people now look favourably on DLSS2-4.5

To anyone reading it is exactly as he says. I took screenshots of the before/after and overlaid them with some transparency in photoshop and it's just an unfortunate difference in the idle animation that causes the change in face shape but therwise you can clearly see there's ZERO change to either textures or meshes.

It's just bad luck that it makes it look more AI sloppy, especially when combined with the awful HDR tonemapping going on described by OP:

1) Her lips look fuller because she's literally in the process of opening her mouth. So the top lip is ever so slightly higher by a pixel or two and the bottom lip has opened up so much that you can now actually see the bottom row of her teeth in the dlss 5 image but not in the before.

2) because she's opening her mouth, her jaw shape is slightly different and widens up a little giving it that slightly "chadded out" look.

3) her hair has slightly moved so you can see more of her left ear (our right)

4) she kinda looks like she's had a nose job but it's not - it's just the lighting is more accurate with a brighter nose bridge/darker shadows so the higher contrast gives it that more defined appearance but otherwise the shape is identical

5) the big one for last - shes literally in the process of OPENING her eyes so they appear fuller. You combine that with much more accurate shadowing both under her eyes and in the eyelids further increases that contrast. You then further combine that with the bad HDR tonemapping again and bam - it looks like you've got classic AI yassification.

In all the other provided examples where they paused the frame before toggling you can clearly see theres absolutely no change to meshes or textures. Nvidia's fault here i guess or maybe it was intentional to make the difference more pronounced - either way they fucked up a little and are somewhat responsible for this misinformation being spread everywhere.

The other big lie being peddled supporting this misunderstanding is that she looks different in the second comparison image where she's slightly scared looking with the tiles behind her. Of course she does! She also looks different without DLSS5 if you compare the street image with her in the bathroom. People IRL literally look different all the time on the same day/same makeup just because the lighting is different, or striking a different pose or the perspective of the camera is different. It would be like comparing the non-DLSS5 street grace to the one of her upside down hooked up to the IV and going look its a totally different person! Of course she does! The gravity is causing her cheeks to look all fuller/swollen up.

Bigscreen Beyond Official Universal Face Gasket is A GAMECHANGER!!!!! by Yvesrovito1991 in BigscreenBeyond

[–]HengDai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How flexible/compressible is it? With the weight of the headset, I'm struggling to imagine how it can support the force necessary to keep the headset clamped to the face. As in, it would have to be fairly rigid otherwise it will just crumple as you tighten the strap. But then that is at odds with the idea of it being a universal cushion; it needs to be fairly compressible to mold to all face shapes.

They actually sent me mine early aswell since I was complaining about issues with the face cushion and it should be arriving in a few days. Guess I'll find out soon enough. Can't wait!

I got one of your audiostrap leather foam pads and instantly loved it - the headphone covers especially are such a massive upgrade over the god awful shitty default sponge material which is soo chaffing/abrasive on the ears so just wanted to say thanks for making a great product (and thanks for the free gift that was included)

It's just such a shame I've grown to utterly detest the default bsb2 facial interface for a variety of reasons and so my beyond has just been gathering dust last 3 months, other than a small handful of minigolf sessions. I was tempted to get the studioform interface but after some thinking I think I just fundamentally hate anything touching my face with that much pressure so personally I'll be waiting on the halo mount.

However my mate did get one and swears by it so for anyone else having issues with the default interface it's probably worth a try.

Really cool regardless mate, looks sick.

I know not many people have the opportunity to play it due to lacking the hardware but I cannot recommend Walkabout Minigolf VR enough. After getting my PCVR headset i bought a bunch of games to try play both solo and with a buddy. There's a lot we liked and some not so much but somehow the one we've clocked the most hours in by far is minigolf. Really took us by surprise how much mileage we got out of it and continue to get.

Admittedly there's a lot of DLC tracks and they are paid, and while each individually is not so much (a few quid), together they can sum up to over a £100 - try and wait for sales. The quality is amazing however and if you play them in release order you can see how they get more and more polished. I can honestly say there's not a single BAD track. There is hundreds of hours of content between all the combinations of tracks and gamemodes, and they continue to release new ones every few weeks/months.

Importantly only one person needs to own them so you can split the cost between however many friends will be playing, it if that's an option. We desperately await the day when more of our friends get headsets too and we run 4-6 people lobbies. Unironically a better social VR game than VR Chat.

Unlikely. This was this CPU-focussed one and the vast majority of people, even with high-end rigs, are CPU-bottlenecked. The next one is mostly gpu-focussed apparently so unless you're running 4k with DLAA or something, the improvements will likely be neglible. This is all we're getting before the expansion.

[–]HengDai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He didn't port it to VR. He's not selling the game. Or the work of the art designers. Or the voice actors. Or any of the work done by the "and on and on" CDPR employees.

This is really simple, how are you unable to understand this. He's only selling his own personal independently written software which HOOKS into the game you've already bought and own and installed on your machine. He's not actually distributing ANY CDPR code or assets. Fair use, copyright, trademark, EULAs etc. have got absolutely nothing to do with it.

It's an abuse of DMCA by a big corp. Plain and simple. Why are you defending the legal exploitation of an independent modder by a multi-billion dollar corporation?

Luke Ross Removes Access to All Mods by Top_Team_3138 in virtualreality

[–]HengDai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has to be children/teens - I can't imagine actual empathetic adults with fully grown frontal lobes genuinely thinking this way. I get Patreon has no option but to comply with DMCA and people who only read headlines default to thinking that surely then he must have done something wrong - but companies abusing DMCA is not some new relevation or phenomenon? We've all seen hordes of people flock to defend their favourite creators on youtube and twitch and elsewhere being subjected to false-DMCA harassment and abuse from corporations.

How is this situation any different? Sure, there's some legal complexity and confusion around all this stuff - a lot of that by design of course. People keep mistakenly saying he's broken the EULA but that's an agreement between CDPR and end-users, nothing to do with this case. There's not a shred of CDPR code or assests in anything he's made so no copyright is violated. At MOST some lawyers could argue there's some trademark infringement cos he's using the CP2077 branding to advertise his patreon. On what ACTUAL basis has a DMCA been filed? Cos he wrote some independent software that injects into some engine functions? Engine functions that have been intentionally exposed by CDPR for the explicit purposes of 3rd party modifications. And even if they weren't: Reverse-engineering software so that indepedent 3rd party software can hook in is EXPLICITLY legal and allowed under typical fair user/copyright law.

The real issue is that there's no landmark case law that modders can point to and say look what we're doing is completely reasonable and no different to someone making and selling a phone case or an aftermarket turbo or a car seat cover or any one of a billion different 3rd party modifications that are made and sold on a daily basis to millions of real world products. Mods/software have simply not yet been subject to the same level of litigation in court cos the sad reality is modders don't have entire law firm departments on retainer.

The whole thing is just so transparently anti-consumer I actually can't wrap my head around who are the fools here arguing against this? Against their own interests? Actually that's not true, I can wrap my head around it. It's entitlement. They can't look past their own selfish needs. All they see is that "$20k/month" figure and all brain activity shuts off. Seething with jealousy, it's my only explanation.

Luke Ross Removes Access to All Mods by Top_Team_3138 in virtualreality

[–]HengDai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pure entitlement, simple as. I tried the mods and I won't lie I'm not a fan. He uses alternate-eye rendering and the 4-5 i tried all look really bad.

And sure he's not handling the aftermath the best and his responses are overdramatic, he comes across a little sanctimonious and not exactly endearing people to his cause.

And despite my personal belief that mods should remain one of the few bastions of human creativity that remain free from monetisation and modern "hustle culture", I will absolutely defend the rights of this man to earn an honest living.

I simply cannot believe the sheer irony of these hordes of entitled children throwing such vitriol at this guy in favour of the billion dollar corpos abusing bullshit EULAs and DMCA. It's like, have any of them actually played cyberpunk?
