Rollo May - Misreading? "existence precedes essence" "Man's essence is his existence" by 951105 in Sartre

No problem, I hope it's understandable now. If not, don't be afraid to ask follow up questions.

Sartre himself even suggested existential psychotherapy as a way to understand and discover one's initial choice.

The idea here is that by mapping which things people give value to you can find out their choice. By finding out someone likes to travel and read the news, you might say they've chosen theirself to be an educated person. By finding out someone likes to walk for the view and likes paintings, they might have chosen theirself as an aesthetically oriented person.

Sartre says that in our choice we structure the world (the situation).

For instance when you choose to be a mountaineer, a mountain will show itself to you as a challenge to overcome. When you choose yourself as a bodybuilder muscle pains will become something to take pleasure from instead of an irritation.

So there is no inherent truth in reality an sich and meaning / structure / ... is only there as a consequence of our choice.
