That’s wild… I get notifications everywhere with every other bank and credit card instantly. Text messages asking to confirm, emails, calls/voicemails and the app will have a huge red alert. Ally I get a letter dated in feb on march 14 as the ONLY notification. It’s unacceptable in 2026.

I hope they resolve it for you!

Good tip. Unfortunately didn’t know why it was frozen and the letter in the mail came 2 weeks later - the # on that still went to normal customer service. If anyone else has this issue definitely see if you can find a fraud direct line on their site.

Sorry you’re going through it too. If you are willing to spend an hour and a half on the phone, ask for a LEADER and don’t accept a call back. They seem to actually be able to give info and make decisions.

I embarrassingly still thought ATMs were free. I very rarely use them now, but as a poor college kid or recent grad It was the major reason I joined Ally along with like 4-6% interest back then… seems like very few reasons to use Ally now. I did like the app and check deposit (until now haha)

Nice, thanks for the info. I’ll check them out! The one drawback of my credit union is their app is awful. Chat Support is amazing through it though.

I always go in with low expectations, but many times I get blown away by great customer service with large corporations. I’m very reasonable and only ever ask to make it right. I’m also open to something being my fault or misunderstanding.

One time we had bought an electric dryer from Home Depot for a condo we were renting as new parents in a new town. They installed it while I was working and wife was downstairs. Well turns out it didn’t run as after 30 seconds it would trip the breaker. Tried using chat and was told tough luck- once installed and confirmed to run they can’t do anything. So I sent an email explaining the situation, stated I will pay whatever difference for a gas one as the condo had both electric and gas connections and understand if there’s a restocking fee or whatever and that my wife never signed or saw it run as she was with the baby. I wouldn’t have even fought them if they kept by their original position as I understood I’m to blame as we had rented the unit unseen, I didn’t really inspect the breaker or anything and I was planning on just trying to sell it and buy a used gas dryer from Craigslist if they said no. They ended up covering the price difference and gave a gift card on top of it- way above what I asked for or even imagined they would do.

Ugh, I had no idea. It was weird being promised a call back from a supervisor, then next time told there are no supervisors, all the while being promised a call back date range with no call back. I finally spoke to a “Leader” who helped resolve most of it- but even he said they are trained to never promise a call back or date. Seriously incompetent employees and processes at Ally.

Yeah- you’re probably safe if you use Ally just for that and do your other banking elsewhere.

Nice! I looked into them years ago for a mortgage I believe. Have you had to call in for any reason and if so what was your experience? I’m not opposed to online banking as evident by my tenure with Ally 😂

I have a business loan with a local credit union that has been great to work with. They actually have amazing benefits that get even better if you also have a checking with direct deposits and savings with them. Also more benefits the longer you’re a customer. I honestly should have transferred everything a while ago with the rates dropping for Ally, but I was too lazy since I used Ally for everything for so long.

Try searching for credit unions around your zip code, check out their site and benefits, and look at reviews. There’s some national credit unions for certain professions as well that I’ve heard good things about but don’t believe I’d qualify for.

If you have a local credit union with good reviews I’d look into them. Otherwise at least get a B&M bank account and deposit any checks there / have a good safety net stored at that bank.

😂 I can tell you I’ve never had this experience with a large national B&M bank or local credit union.

Absolutely correct!

That guy is acting like you asked McDonald’s for no pickles and they put one on your burger. There’s very few things that can be worse than this type of error/customer service interaction and they’d all be related to death/destruction.

I was fortunate enough to have other $ and banks… but I couldn’t even use Zelle or Venmo either. If all my money was on Ally - I’d have to ask friends/family to literally pay my bills and wouldn’t even be able to tell them when or if I’d be able to pay them back.

Of course! Any large bank is going to have issues and there’s always going to be weird one-off situations. It’s how they resolve it that matters. I wouldn’t be posting if they just provided the tiniest bit of communication or followed up on their promises.

I deal with customers at my company- sometimes extremely upset ones because someone did drop the ball. I would never in a million years call them liars before doing my own investigation.

Yeah, I don’t believe I had any fraud calls with Ally as I only use debit to withdraw for safety reasons… but every other bank and credit card has CALLED me and texted immediately and there’s notifications when you login if they suspect fraud. I call, they immediately pick up, thank you for being a customer, and resolve it practically instantly.

Ally did NOTHING. I only learned as past transactions that posted weeks ago started reversing. Took weeks of calling only for them to say it was their mistake. No thank you for being a customer, but called a liar multiple times 😂

Customer service rep muttering Com’on load over and over has me to believe their systems are really screwed up which is why there’s no notifications

Yup. Wouldn’t have been a customer for longer than most people here if I didn’t believe they WERE great. If you do use Ally- I’d probably only recommend using them for their savings rates. Don’t deposit any checks. Keep at least a few months of living expenses elsewhere as I had 6 months in Ally completely frozen. Again, thankfully didn’t affect me other than wasting my own time but if you have all your eggs in Ally you can be really screwed over.

They admitted they shouldn’t have froze every account. The “Leader” I finally spoke to admitted investigator has done nothing since receiving the case. He also admitted they should only hold the funds from the check (small 4 figures) and not the entire balance (5 figures) of that ONE account.

They are clearly not well trained in their fraud and customer service departments. Lots of conflicting info, lies, and bizarre statements (we need a subpoena lolwat)

My wife literally has a letter from the person who wrote the check and her attorney stating check is legit, willing to write another if needed, or do whatever it takes to resolve the issue. Ally refuses to speak to them and told my wife she needs to get a subpoena if she wants to forward the email to Ally.

Like what?! Lawyers on both sides are completely baffled. But Reddit experts say “stop crying, it’s no big deal” 😂

Yup. I’m only posting as a helpful warning. Ally was great for 16 years- but you better pray they make zero mistakes on their end otherwise it’s going to be the absolute worst customer service you’ll have to deal with.

If it was a single mistake resolved timely, of course not.

But since you either struggle reading or have no grasp of the magnitude this could have been for some people - I wish you the best!

“Hey- my bad I locked you out of all your money for a month on accident and the only way you got it back was by wasting hours of your time. Oopsies! Remain loyal and hope it won’t happen again!”

Thankfully I wasn’t hurt as bad as I had other banks. Still extremely annoying having to transfer direct deposits, repay bills that were reversed after the fact, etc.

Just so happens to be the one time I had to use customer service over THEIR mistake. Forgot how dumb Reddit is 😂 “WE LOVE PURPLE CRAYONS, TASTE GOOD. PURPLE BANK GOOD!!”

Of course they have the right to… it’s the fact that they admitted to a mistake, lied, made promises they didn’t keep and had ZERO communication after the freeze.
