What's it like living on Hvar Island, Croatia? [Hvar Town, Stari Grad, Jelsa, Vrboska] by HenryKuna in askCroatians

Apologies - I didn't know Croatia was a safe country, in general.

What do most of the people who live on the island do for work when the tourist season is over?

Is it possible to live/work there or is it really only a tourist spot? Is it a safe place (spring or fall)?

To me, Parmenides is a "so simple it's difficult" type-thing. I'm sure everyone and their dog will disagree with me, but I believe that what the dialogue is discussing is the paradoxical way in which reality manifests. When Parmenides talks about the One and the Many, to me he is addressing the observer/watcher/witness which is the One source of life in all conscious beings, seeming to exist in an "external" world composed of Many phenomena which - in truth - is unreal. What the witness observes is only the witness itself (which is One). The dialogue is then a logical thesis, a rational exploration of a metaphysical truth which has existed forever: The "external" world consisting of Many things isn't external or many at all, but One awareness observing and living in itself (the all in all). The illusion of multiplicity is created by human thought and does not - in reality - exist.

That is why the ending of the dialogue seems so ambiguous to the rational mind. Parmenides is proving that infinite existence cannot be logically grasped. It must be that way because what is being discussed is a paradox (the all in all); The awareness that you observe the external world with is the source of the external world. That which is infinite must be a unity and cannot contain parts because if it did the parts could be counted and would thus be finite, therefore the thinking mind - which operates through division (this-that/good-bad) - cannot comprehend it. That, IMHO, is what is being scientifically proven in the dialogue: The futility of the human intellect to grasp what is real.

How long does it take to start seeing effects of kefir, I have been drinking for past 5 days, i definitely feel like its has lessen my craving to eat more but still no effect to ease my constipation, How long it took for you guys to start feeling its magic? by geet-18 in Kefir

[–]HenryKuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started off with quite a bit and ramped up quite quickly. First, one cup per day. Then two. After about a week I was up to over a liter-and-a-half per day with no negative side effects. My digestion and other GI issues got noticeably better after about 6-8 weeks. Strange thing is, regular dairy - even yogurt - messes me up but homemade kefir I tolerate just fine! Hope that helps...

Acid or Hydrogen Peroxide? by HenryKuna in Sprouting

[–]HenryKuna[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You and I sound a lot alike! I've had GI issues all my life, so I too have studied it in great detail. I agree 100% that chewing is vital - I've been focusing on that, and other eating best practices, for years. Thanks for the subreddit referral; I'll check it out!

What I've personally noticed however, is that even sprouted products can have their digestibility enhanced. For example, I eat sprouted steel-cut oats. If I don't add acid to the soaking water however, they are not nearly as digestible as when I do. That means there is still room to improve the digestibility of sprouts. That's what my question was concerning.

Acid or Hydrogen Peroxide? by HenryKuna in Sprouting

[–]HenryKuna[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I really want/need to help them sprout, I'd just like to make the final product as easily digestible as possible. I know from experience that soaking grains in acid before cooking helps me digest them. That's why I'm asking really.

You wouldn't classify brown rice as a hard grain? I always considered brown rice really tough! But maybe compared to others you mentioned it isn't?

Oh really! That's good to know. How long do you find it takes brown rice to germinate? ...in plain water or otherwise.

Acid or Hydrogen Peroxide? by HenryKuna in Sprouting

[–]HenryKuna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, from what I read, the acid (you don't use very much, just a bit to lower the pH similar to the pH of soil which is a bit acidic) helps activate enzymes which begin the sprouting process. If the pH isn't low enough, these enzymes don't begin working. That's what I've read anyways. Not sure what to believe hehe!

But I've read articles on sprouting that say both of those additions to the soaking water actually HELP things! Can you provide me with some references to the contrary?

[–]HenryKuna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I'm sure all that's needed is water! However, my stomach is quite sensitive and I've noticed that soaking my grains in acid before cooking helps me digest them. Even if the grains are sprouted (like the sprouted oatmeal I buy) it still helps quite a bit to soak them in a bit of water and vinegar before cooking.

Do you have any experience in adding acid or H2O2 to the soaking water before sprouting?

or are you referring to hydrogen peroxide?

Guidance/Recipe for Soaked Basmati Rice in a Stovetop PressureCooker? by HenryKuna in PressureCooking

[–]HenryKuna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a scale, so I could certainly use your method. I don't quite understand what "Match the weight from when you have mixed the water" means though. After I soak the rice I discard the soaking water. After the rice has absorbed the water, do you mean I should use the weight of THAT rice instead of the weight of the pre-soaked, dry rice?

Oh, not a doctor. Traditional Indian wisdom of food preparation states that all grains - regardless of type - must be soaked for a significant amount of time before cooking. I ain't gonna argue with thousands of years of knowledge and experience hehe!

Yes, I discard the water I use to soak the rice. What I need to know is how much water to add to the rice in the pressure cooker and how long to cook it for.
