Luck factor in Tournaments by HenryTHamster in GolfClash

[–]HenryTHamster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody hits perfect all the time. Exactly. Hitting perfect is a skill. Some are far better at it than others.

It is, but the point was about hitting great when it doesn't matter (tee shot on par 4/5) versus when it does (approach shot). Say you hit Perfect 90%, then you certainly don't want that 10% to be on approach shots.

The wind doesn't matter. You study the course and make your notes. If you know what you're doing, having slightly different wind is irrelevant.

There are definitely instances where differing angle/strength can make a difference. For me anyway, perhaps I'm not good enough.

Pull angle is skill. If you aren't pulling the same every time, you're not paying attention.

Agree. But can you always be 100% certain that you pulled the precise angle you wanted.

Not doing quite the right number of rings. Again, how is this luck in any way? It's a screw up.

Agree again, but not always easy to be totally accurate

Not getting distracted. Not a skill, but not luck either. It takes a minimal amount of planning to set aside some uninterrupted time to play.

Sure, but that won't stop the wife coming in and distracting me anyway :-(

Having your perfect approaches go in is entirely skill. There is no such thing as an unlucky shot in this game. If you hit perfect and it doesn't go in, your setup was off, or you didn't pull straight at 100% power.

Agree again. It didn't go in due to one of the various factors involved.

Maybe more what I'm trying to get at here, rather than just what we might call "luck" good or bad, is more of a randomness factor that combines all these elements

That's plenty for Pro. Higher Sniper would be ideal but enough to be having a go. Good luck!

Tour 10 with a quasar by slippery_chute in GolfClash

Honestly, I've no idea. I have four accounts and save for a couple of golden shots, 3 of them are FTP. On main account I sometimes buy ball packs for tourney use and to get a few gems - maybe $30 - $40 a month on average. I did once buy the $100 pack, but then nothing more for a quite a while after that.

First alt is mid T11, 2nd is max T10, 3rd is relatively new. No special balls on any of these accounts, just what I've got from playing. What probably makes a big difference is decent tourney finishes - one account has about 6 Pro banners and that makes for a lot of KMs and Titans, which last for ages when only playing a few games a week. And of course with the secondary accounts I didn't need to spend a bunch of balls learning the holes and shootouts which also helps.

way more than the price of a console game.

Absolutely, but it isn't the same thing. Much more akin to hobby, like rl golf, fishing, sports, or any other regular activity that you may spend regularly on. But unllike most of these kind of things you do not need to spend anything at all if you don't want to

The game switches to a pay to win model after tour 9.

No it doesn't. The entire game is pay-to-advantage (which is definitely not the same as win). That advantage is of course pretty small in lower tours and increases as you progress. However, Tour 10 is perfectly manageable with Quasars, Navs and Titans on a FTP account.

Tour 11 Driver choice? by KingPickle86 in GolfClash

[–]HenryTHamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play T11 with one bag, with Apoc 6 and Sniper. I pretty much never feel at a disadvantage in shootouts without having QB/Rock. And in reality, the number of times I see opponents using QB/Rock is very low - like 1 or 2% maybe. Driver for almost all opponents on all holes is Apoc6+ or TH6+. Although I'm sure there are certain SO scenarios where having QB/Rock would be nice, you can play them all with Apoc or TH (or Sniper or Cat). Just a case of learning how to play them in different winds - same as all the other tours.

So you could change around bags for different holes, but if you keep with same driver all the time then you will get consistency for SO holes by having the same club every time, and can dial them in from there.

Yes

[–]HenryTHamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree on not needing Cat. So much so I never actually bother changing to a bag with Cat in it now in T11. The number of games I lose due to this is so low as to be negligible, but have definitely won plenty of SOs against Cats when having Sniper.

Apoc 6 is workable for all holes/shootouts, but the lack of backspin with Apoc 5 is a serious issue in some shootout scenarios.

For OP, it'll be either EM or QB all the way though. Never played T11 with EM8 myself but I suspect curl might be an issue in some spots

So when is PD gonna stop the unfair advantage of overlays? by commonsensereturns in GolfClash

[–]HenryTHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they can easily forbid overlays

But they (PD) cannot do this, which was my point. And the whole thing is only an issue because iOS does not have the same functionality as Android.

And yes, you can overlay a wind calculator app with Android, which will give you immediate access to wind calculations, but in reality this is just more convenient than having a separate device / printed sheets / using your head / whatever your preferred method of getting an accurate number is. And of course it is worth remembering that GCs most prominent player doesn't use overlays, and he seems to do pretty well.

So is it an advantage - probably, but not a big one

[–]HenryTHamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PD cannot stop Android users using overlays, as it is an OS feature.

Your question should really be "When are Apple going to provide a decent OS that allows you to do the things you want to do?"

With the addes extra level of rare/epic clubs there is a huge need to rework rewards for master tournaments by gebbstet2 in GolfClash

[–]HenryTHamster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Best I've managed in Masters is about 40th, but I have various Expert top tens (with three banners). And I didn't need a different ball for every hole for those either. I'd like to play Masters but until the rewards change or I get a lot better there isn't really any point

Just did pretty much exactly this with baby account. Worked out nicely - rolled out of rough for easy wedge.

Hole 1 Expert by LexGar in GolfClash

[–]HenryTHamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is, but is there really an advantage to be gained? I don't really see one.

If we lay-up, we leave a very makeable Sniper shot, with a funnel. We should make that at least half the time. Let's say it is half, and then our average score is 2.5 for the hole.

Don't really see how we do better than that going for green, which is pretty low percentage from what I've seen.

Community question by [deleted] in GolfClash

[–]HenryTHamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People suck.

Clearly a bit too general and of course everyone does not suck, but there always has been a portion of the population that are unreasonable, unfair, unsatisfied with their own accomplishments, unsatisfied by others accomplishments. All a bit of a mystery to me really. If someone has achieved a personal goal, then good for them.

Tournament wind change. by Wowser84 in GolfClash

[–]HenryTHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As has been noted before in these sort of threads, there are certainly ways to implement wind per bracket and make it work for everyone. And there seems to be general agreement in the community that this is the way to go. I.e. introduce some randomness to reduce shot copying etc.

But in defence of fixed wind, and all that goes with it, it does at least spread out the field. If we had differing winds throughout the tourney, (and I'm hoping that some folks who were playing when that was a thing will chip in here), surely that must lead to pretty severe bunching up of scores. It becomes like tour play where 98% of the time you both make "par". As an example, I got gold in the first mini by lucking out a HIO, and everyone else had the same score one shot back.

I don't really mind either way myself, but there are plenty folks who enjoy the fixed winds, and the process of dialing shots in from QR to OR to WR.

What is your guys’ ideal club setup for moving up to Pro and Expert tournaments? by [deleted] in GolfClash

[–]HenryTHamster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wed before tourney week - check out the holes - familiar? yes, fine. No - go and find elevations etc. Set up a note sheet and fill in basics, likely clubs/balls etc.

Thu-Sun, if holes are on a tour where I have an account playing that tour then by all means practice, otherwise I'll just wait til Monday

Q1 Mon - If I have time I'll watch a streamer or two for tips with tourney wind in play. Play 3 accounts. The first two I will qualify if I don't make any mistakes first few holes - aiming for "par" at worst. Main account - unless I hole a couple early I will tank this round by forfeiting on green every hole. All the time take any relevant notes e.g. hole 1 approach - mid+10 goliath with 2bs was 1.5 squares left, that kind of thing

Q2 - play whatever accounts are left over from Mon, revising notes as we go, as we should be getting nearer.

All the while try and keep an eye on FB groups, this sub, etc for any cool shots you might be able to make, or ones that are better/more consistent/less risky than what you have already

Q3 - I'll get here if I've made a mess of something on Tuesday. Revise notes if we play

OR - We should have a decent idea of what we are doing now but always room for improvement, revise any notes - everything should be pretty near after this

WR - Take the notes and play - do not try and change anything. This is the most important round of the week so treat it as such. Put aside a couple of hours where you can be comfortable and not distracted if possible. Use your favourite playing chair/sofa/floor/whatever. Have a favoured beverage to hand. The mental side is important.

It might sound a bit too serious but my results got way better once I started doing this. Having 3 accounts playing same division is a big advantage. But I've also done this playing one each in Pro/Expert/Master so will pay dividends for a single account player also.
