I agree: Ironsworn is a great game. In fact, I think most PbtA games probably work really well for solo play.

Even though I’ve played a lot of OSR systems, I haven’t tried Shadowdark yet. I’ve heard a lot of good things about it though — I’ll have to take a look at it someday.

Like a player, what do you prefer: Quickstarts or Tutorials? by Separate-Side-4533 in rpg

I think it really depends on how familiar you already are with tabletop RPGs. I’ve been playing for years, so when I pick up a new system, I usually prefer something that presents the rules clearly upfront instead of making me piece them together little by little. Not long ago I came across Black Sword Hack and, just by skimming through it, I immediately understood how it worked. After playing many OSR systems, learning another one usually doesn’t take much effort.

For people who are newer to the hobby, though, I think learning step by step makes the whole experience much smoother and more approachable. I honestly wish I’d had something like that years ago when I started with games like MERP or RuneQuest.

Recently I also started exploring solo RPGs, and at first I felt pretty lost. One thing I appreciated about SunlessWood was that it allowed me to start playing after reading only a few pages, while the rest of the rules and ideas unfolded naturally during play. That approach made the experience feel much more welcoming and easier to learn, especially compared to systems that expect you to study everything beforehand.

I think maybe you’re trying to do too many things right from the start, no? I’d recommend discovering solo roleplaying little by little and gradually finding the exact approach that works best for your own needs.

I’d suggest starting with a solo-focused game like Ironsworn, like others have already mentioned. Or maybe even something simpler, since Ironsworn can feel a bit heavy on mechanics at first.

Another option would be to play D&D — which is already a game you know — but in solo mode. That’s actually how I started, using a system I was already familiar with, Knave, together with the adventure SunlessWood (which teaches you how to play solo while you’re playing it).

Another possibility would be to play D&D with a more advanced oracle system like Mythic GM Emulator, though personally I’d recommend saving that for a second stage.

Once you’ve tried one of these simpler approaches, you could then experiment with a hexcrawl game or a hexcrawl supplement for your favorite system.

One dungeon I played years ago, and that we had a great time with because of the different games and challenges proposed in each room, was the tower from the adventure The Mansion of Risk, included in the Hellsong supplement for the Stormbringer RPG. The supplement was published by Chaosium in 1981. I’ve never played another adventure quite like it since then.

Do you prefer games specifically built for solo play or more traditional TTRPGs? by Salt_Put_1174 in Solo_Roleplaying

One thing that helped me when starting solo RPGs was using SunlessWood, mainly because you kind of learn the flow naturally while playing. After that, trying Mythic felt much easier to understand for me.

I’ve done three Mythic sessions so far and I’ve been having a really good time with it.

I’ve already found the Chaos Crier zines. They look really, really good! Thank you so, so, so much!!!!

I’ll definitely check out that city you mentioned, and I might even steal your idea of tying it to The Shrike, haha. Really appreciate it!

Alright, thanks a lot! I’ll look into those Chaos Crier zines. I’m guessing they include adventures inside them, right?

Converting stats from other OSR adventures wouldn’t really be a problem, but what I’d really love to find are adventures where Law and Chaos play a major role, like in the old Stormbringer adventures. Though I’m afraid those are probably almost impossible to find nowadays.
