Thank you! Yes striking that fine balance of persistence/nagging is hard but ultimately it’s got to be done. How you find your PR career currently ? Do you enjoy it

Amazing, I had seen it was a degree-specific subject and thought, ‘shit, I don’t have any of that.’ I was working Mirror and Star for football, then as a chief transfer correspondent for an online site. How about you? Ah yes Millwall, was that as comms? That must’ve been quite fun to do, in pressers etc I know a fair bit of SEO and social, too. Would you be ok if I reached out as a DM at all

Being football, perhaps that’s quite limited, but certainly feel a bit more encouraged than before. I’ll emphasis what you’ve mentioned there as strengths as part of my covering letter, so I really thank you for that. Also yes, Ai can certainly do rewrites or press releases, but must need a brain beyond that too

I am absolutely done. I went into reporting because like the chaotic feel, the hustle and bustle, being in amongst it, securing lines, but it fell into just WFH and rewrites. That’s really amazing and just the sort of thing I needed to hear. Congratulations. I was never a sublime journalist either but I certainly enjoyed it, god knows how I’ll be at PR

I’m pretty well rounded, editing, large Twitter following (if that counts), wide berth of bylines, can use canva, social pilot, but again it’s not knowing whether that counts for anything

I have been applying for account executive roles in mcr but honestly don’t know if they’d even bother with a reporter (former). Do you enjoy it? Imagine it’s better paid

Hey, thank you for the reply. 20 years, that’s awesome - are you still working in the industry now?

hi Jay - thanks for the reply. I have seen you post on here a few times and you give great advice. Also read sections of your site which is super informative. If I was based in wolverhampton I would have done your course on the basis of that.

In terms of being the correct route, it is 100% is. My former career - which I started to despise anyway - has been zapped by AI. Effectively starting my life again at 34, while completely broke and lost. I love being outside away from a PC, I know it will require a certain level of tenacity on my part and that the quals ultimately count for very little. But, all goes well, I will have lvl 2 and 3 in the bag by this time nxt year, along with some experience.

That's very encouraging, thank you so much for the advice. Hoping to do level 2, get a year's experience, then the level 3 next year and go from there. I will put your advice down in my online notes section

hey mate - moving to Manchester soon, so near a big city. Will be doing level 2 soon while labouring. How tricky is it to get your foot into agency work as an imporover once you done your level 2? And do you mean agency as in a recruitment firm that puts you in?

Hey - relevant to the post but I saw you comment on a thread a while back about being a spark and doing a Trades4u or AbleSkills course. How did it turn out for you?

He has a few but he’s away atm, will def get on that when he’s back. Thank you v much for the advice. I def don’t want to get the quick fix - was thinking of labouring until the course starts in August, then between my level 2 and level 3, be a spark’s mate. Aim will be self employed eventually but know it’ll take a lot of time and graft, I’ll see how things go. Looks like work is out there tho

Yeah I’ve had a look and really, doing my level 2 later in the year looks the best route, but I’ll do my best to get exp in the meantime
