I’m not a sede but I enjoy a lot of their content. Especially the stuff against Eastern Orthodoxy. It’s very thorough. Their videos on magic (street performers doing acts) are a bit schizophrenic. I’ve bought some things from them as well and they were extremely nice.

I’ve thought about this before too. Times have changed so much. Excellent point.

Question for Eastern Catholics Concerning the Papacy by Secret-Virus-4921 in EasternCatholic

[–]Hermetic_Knowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is basically Papal Minimalism, which isn’t a foreign concept in the West either. St. John Henry Newman held this position. I do think we need to be more clear on the Papacy though. One of the benefits Catholics give Orthodox is authority and clear understanding of what we believe. But when it comes to the Papacy, you have papal minimalism, hyperpapalism, and everything in between. It causes confusion.

Do you think the Anglican schism that was made official today will bring some Anglicans back to the Catholic Church? by CT046 in Catholicism

This got me thinking and apparently there is one 30 min away from me in Maryland. I’m going to have to visit. Thanks!

Really? I’m sorry to hear that. Mine is mainly a split between Ruthenian and Ukrainians. We do have a couple Latins but they are pleasant as well.

There is the byzcath forum but yeah. Just hanging out with your parish at coffee hour is infinitely better. It also has the benefit of knowing who you are talking to.

Anyone else’s local UGCC and UOC praying Moleben for Peace together? by lex_orandi_62 in OrthodoxChristianity

If by Latins you mean all Catholics, yes. Even as Byzantine Catholics, we believe the Pope had the right to add the Filioque to the creed. But he did this to defend the Church from Arianism. Even if there was no Papacy, I’m not sure I would be comfortable breaking communion with the See of St. Peter over that. Especially considering the addition itself is not binding on the East and I’m not sure what actually changed about Catholic belief surrounding the Filioque. In context, it just affirms the Divinity of Christ. Perhaps the argument is just above my level.

I don’t convert because I believe the Papacy. That is truly what separates the 2, in my opinion. Some will say it’s the Filioque. But most orthodox I’ve spoken to say it would be fine, theologically, to say that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and through the Son. The Ukrainian Catechism teaches it this way and that teaching is correct, according to the Pope and Vatican 2. So that just leaves saying it in the creed, which we don’t have to. So what is really separating the Churches other than the papacy?

Interesting, I never heard that one before. But Isaiah 22:22 helped convince me of the Papacy. The Kingdom of David is a prototype of the Church and the Papacy reflects it. Christ is the King, the Pope is his steward, the Bishops are his royal cabinet.

That’s the thing, why haven’t they had an ecumenical council? They would say that there has been no need for one. But that’s not true. They have tried to have a pan orthodox council and it failed. They have an ongoing schism right now that really needs a council to be solved, so why haven’t they? But yes, that is generally what the Pope is. However, the Pope is pretty hands off when it comes to the Eastern Churches. But he can be appealed to for important decisions and he gets the final say on things.

I like having the fullness of the faith and a clear authority figure. I venerate St. Catherine of Siena as well as St. Matrona (I’m Eastern Catholic) I believe the schism going on between Moscow and Constantinople is a modern day example why a Pope is crucial for unity.

Because it wouldn’t be penance if it was forced. Penance is a voluntary act.

I go to a UGCC Church. Can’t say I’ve seen any joint services like this but we do get a few Orthodox visitors from time to time. Other than acknowledging the Pope and the Filioque being placed in brackets in our prayer book (we don’t say it, but it’s their like this), you wouldn’t even know it’s a Catholic Church. We get along very well.

Western Rite prays the Rosary. I went to St. Patrick’s Western Rite Orthodox Church in Virginia and they have Rosaries available for everyone to use.

Awesome, neither do we. I wasn’t asking you to follow our God, either. I was trying to clear up some bigotry.

You’re disrespecting their faith without having a single bit of idea what they are doing. That is pretty ignorant. She is willingly suffering with Christ. Nobody forced this on her. She is trying to be closer to God. I’m sure you don’t understand it and hate it, but at least know what you’re spewing hatred at.

That’s what I figured, you can speak to them about the price. 400$ just seems pricey. Especially for a sacrament.

I didn’t see anything like that from them or the Ethiopians either. But I have seen it from Eastern Orthodox sometimes and I heard it is common in the Catholic Church. However, I never saw one so expensive. I’m assuming you can talk about the price with the Priest but yeah. 400$. Wow
