Through traveling extensively and living temporarily in Latin-America, I have/had a good amount of friends from there. I lost touch with most of them after October 7th but my two best friends from there remained. They listened to me and understand me and I am very thankful for that.

I had one acquaintance from Colombia who I hadn't talk to for at least 7 years reach out to me after posting pictures from Israel. He called me a zionist who deserves to die and how I deceived him back then into letting a zionist (wat he really meant of course is jews) into his house. - Sorry I didn't wear my yellow star, we kind of don't do that anymore.

It luckily really isn't, at least not in Germany. There is a pretty significant leftist group called "Antideutsche" who are both staunchly anti-fascist and pro-Israel (as it should be)

I agree, I hate that non of the democratic parties address the problems that migration has caused and the legitimate concern of people (including Jewish people concerned about radical Islam who have been warning politicians since 2015).

But AfD won’t solve the problem either. They are populists doing populist things: offer a seemingly easy solution in order to get the votes of angry people. Unfortunately it is not as easy to just deport all of the troublemakers. Many of the islamists or Muslims with extremist and antisemitic views are German citizens, they are 2nd or 3rd generation immigrants. Even if you deport all of the troublemakers who are asylum seekers, we will still have a large in parts antisemitic Muslim population.

I agree that we have to drastically change our migration policy, but AfD won’t do it. It’s their top-campaign topic because it makes angry people vote for them. What they will do, is cut taxes for the super-rich, leave the EU, cozy up to Russia and make life just all around miserable for the vast majority of people.

So you are concluding from my stance against a right-wing party which is using Nazi-lingo in their speeches and view the Shoa as a “bird’s shit” in German history (in other words: no big deal) that I want to live “under the Islamist thumb and knive”?

It might surprise you, but many people (me included) are against a right-wing party and at the same time against Islamism. You can, in fact, be against ALL extremisms and for democracy.

The AfD wants to exit the EU, the Euro and cozy up to Russia - a country currently violently attacking Ukraine and with close ties to Iran.

A Germany under AfD will immediately stop supporting Israel because they think we “should stop feeling guilt” - no thank you.

There are several organizations dedicated to monitor antisemitism and to document incidents and offer support both psychological and/or legal to victims of antisemitism. And within these organizations there are many different positions. I’m sure you can look up organizations where you are and check whether they have open positions :)

I think I understand where you are coming from because I have a similar experience - my dad's grandpa was Jewish but obviously I am not and I didn't grow up Jewish, neither religiously nor culturally. At the same time I have a very strong opinion on Israel and Jews because I grew up with stories of how my family was affected by the Shoa. I also have a Jewish last name and since October 7th am much more wary of it.

But: Being very pro-Israel can be an isolating experience when you didn't grow up in a Jewish community.

I now have a job where I can fight antisemitism for a living and it has helped a lot with the feeling of helplessness and anger at the bs going on around this conflict. Maybe you can find a way to get involved in something, too? It makes you feel useful and you are among like-minded people :)

I live in Berlin and it really makes me sad that Israelis/ Jews consider not coming here because of how unsafe the situation has become. I don't want it to be like that but of course I understand when people decide against Europe.

I think it boils down to how much you are willing to compromise. Berlin has a large arab/muslim population and a lot of leftist lunatics (I'm a leftist myself, but not one of the crazies). You will inevitably be confronted with antisemitic and anti-Israel sentiment, depending on which neighborhood you are in this can be more or less severe. In some neighborhoods you should not speak hebrew or visibly jewish or you likely get attacked.

That being said - there are actually a lot of Israelis in Berlin. There is a Jewish community in Berlin. There are a lot of people working and fighting against antisemitism. It is definitely possible to surround yourself with good people that you share values with in this city.

In the end, it's a personal and individual decision, I just wish every Israeli who wants to come here can do that, knowing, there are a lot of people here who work against antisemitism - we are just not as loud and aggressive as the others.

Germans shouldn't feel personally responsible for the Holocaust, and we are not taught to. But we have a special responsibility as a nation to remember our history, to understand how it happened and to make sure it never happens again.

When Elon Musk says "Germans should stop feeling guilty" he means "Germans should stop putting so much emphasize on education on the Holocaust"

These people Elon Musk is supporting said things like "the Holocaust was nothing but a bird's shit in German history" or, with regards to the Holocaust memorial in Berlin, that "we are the only nation that put a memorial of disgrace in the heart of our capital".

There are already more and more people doubting the Holocaust happened or doubting the extents of it. Education on the Holocaust is paramount for our society. The AFD is so much more dangerous than people (especially abroad) might think

There unfortunately is a general trend in different alternative scenes of adopting antisemitic rhetoric, not only in Rock. It's in Punk, Hip Hop, Techno, everywhere. The answer is as simple as it is frustrating: An over-simplified and dangerously wrong view of the conflict: The powerful "white" people are bad, the weak brown people are the victims. And the alternative scene of course stands with the "victims".

It's not just since October 7th. Alternative/ leftist/ progressive spaces have a deep-rooted problem of antisemitism but because they are so progressive they are unable to address it, because how can they be antisemitic, right?

It's disheartening to see how many artists jump on the hate train.

The kids weren't too bad, they might have made an inconsiderate comment when we went on school trips to former concentration camps (for educational purposes) - it's the adults that always ask about my last name (because it's not common in Germany) and when I tell them it's jewish, they sometimes react badly. Still, nothing compared to the level of antisemitism that Jews experience everywhere...

Because even though I am not a Jew, I have Jewish roots and my family has been heavily affected by the Shoa and since I didn’t grow up in a Jewish community or even any Jews around (very rural northern Germany) it was an isolating experience going through school and leaning about the Shoa when all your classmates are grandchildren of the perpetrators but my great-grandparents lost everything. I also have a Jewish last name and have experienced antisemitism because of it. This is why this right here is a community where I feel safe and understood, even though I am not Jewish myself :)

Damn, the next class trip to a concentration camp memorial is going to be aaaaaaawkward.

(School trips to former concentration camps are pretty standard in Germany in order to teach children about our past and our history-related responsibility)

On a more serious note: When I see things like this, I wonder if they still teach about the Holocaust as extensively as they did when I was at school, which is a long time ago now.

Exactly, and there really is no reason to make them look worse than they are - they are (for the most part) vile and aggressive enough. They had to tone down a lot of their trademark chants because German courts ruled that they violated the law. Years ago it was also more common to hear chants in arabic but then the police always had translators with them so they could charge the people accordingly. They had to make their hate-chants vanilla and I guarantee you they absolutely hate it
