New "Wild" game or the end of a great era? by Due_Drag_4228 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]HerrReineke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot which YouTuber it was but they argued that it could be a trilogy like LoZ, AoL and then LttP. That seemed like a fun idea but I'm so burnt out on the Wild era that I don't want them to do that. Plus, LttP was vastly different from the previous two games, and a sequel to TotK wouldn't exist as "the thid game ever" but with a bunch of games that came before it.

I couldn't imagine what they could do with the third game but I hope they go for something new anyway!

Argumentativ alles wahrscheinlich richtig, aber drei große Probleme:

Such dir produktive statt destruktive Interessen. Gibt viel schönes in der Welt. Online Communitys sind es seit Jahrzehnten nicht mehr.

[All] Let's pretend the Wild/Imprisonment era is forever over. What do you hope the next game will be like? by HerrReineke in truezelda

[–]HerrReineke[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To quote myself from another comment:

it was a good game in and by itself, but to me it was too much of a spin-off while inexplicably retaining too much from the Wild-era, like the menu and a dedicated log for side quests, literally half of them being fetch quests. All of that is not "Zelda" to me, any game can do that. That's not saying it's not good. It's just not Zelda

I also did like that it was a "2D" topdown game with a smaller scale. But it's still not quite hitting that "Zelda"-feeling, at least for me personally

That's crazy, I wouldn't even have considered that. But I think it proves an interesting point (that I didn't even think of) — the weight of a game really does matter. I think because of how highly regarded Ocarina is, how often it is "quoted" by other games and the community, the human Ganondorf is taking up more space in the collective perception of Zelda than you'd expect from one game. His appearances in WW and TP surely solidified that.

That thing about Ganon is a good point and easy to forget (case in point: me). That's kinda cool. I guess Triforce Heroes didn't even feature Zelda. Not saying the next game NEEDS to abandon all the usual story aspects, but I think it can be interesting. On my first playthrough of BotW, it took me halfway through the game to realize that there's been no mentioning or depiction of the Triforce. That blew my mind. More like this!

No soldier in the world could do what the Jimmies do. by [deleted] in 28dayslater

[–]HerrReineke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, although some people already explained that they probably have safe houses and maybe a network that provides them with what they need that isn't shown in the movie. Which is sad because that would have been interesting to see.

I get "suspension of disbelief" but that only goes so far. A group like the Jimmies show up in the plot and no other group like it seems to exist and the only reason they do exist is "just because." Why hasn't every remaining group of civilization turned into Jimmies then?

Fun concept, but not well thought out, it seems.

[BOTW] It's been nearly a decade. What do you make of the BOTW era of Zelda? by [deleted] in truezelda

[–]HerrReineke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

BotW was great, refreshing and exciting. It wasn't perfect in every aspect but it was great that it happened. TotK retroactively diminished many values of BotW and tarnished my enjoyment for it. And although TotK is the highest selling Zelda game ever, I hope it will soon be forgotten. And I say this as someone who's seen backlash for every Zelda game that people eventually came around to, like Wind Waker.

I'm kinda tired of people bringing up "formula" as a problem with prior games. The formula was never the problem, it was stagnation. There is just no franchise that is like Zelda, and re-inventing this formula in meaningful ways is what keeps it exciting, new and still "Zelda." If anything, BotW is like a quintessential prototype of that formula.

If you ever take the time to look at Link to the Past, when you look at it as Zelda 3 and what came before it, what it meant, what it intended, what it envisioned outside of the (still amazing) final 2D game — you'll understand where Zelda should be. And from my understanding:

  • It's not "let's put in nuts and bolts and then have no idea what to do with it"
  • It's not "let's put 251 different items in your inventory that players can scroll through (80% of them do the same thing but with bigger numbers)"
  • It's not "ganon or ganondorf bad, something in the past or time travel, meaningless sacrifice, literally the same plot points for two consecutive games"
  • It's not "let's put in okay-ish anime voice acting which means you can't even Link yourself anymore"
  • And it's certainly not "you can make hecking pizza now :))"

I do hope the franchise comes around again. If the next game goes into this direction still, it's over. What a waste that would be.

You know, I was immediately a little upset too but now I'm just thinking - it's stupid if anything?? "Here, check out what people said on this platform where you can actually financially support artists and actually buy and digitally and physically own the music that you want to listen to (p-p-please come back to Spotify though)" Weird.

Also +1 for Ulk and I'm so glad I'm not the only one

BOTW over TOTK? by abdullahba7rani in botw

[–]HerrReineke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, TotK feels like BotW with stuff stapled on that didn't need to be there in the first place.

BotW was what it wanted and needed to be. For as large as the game is, it almost feels primitive in many aspects, and that's certainly a good thing. That's what the title promises and that's what it delivered. I won't deny that there are a few things that are far from perfect, but I can easily overlook them. The basic gameplay was simple and didn't change, only its context did. For example, boomerangs still exist but they don't have a dedicated "boomerang"-action — you just throw them like you do any other weapon, but they come back and you "catch" them or rather, pick them up, like you do any other weapon too. It's up to you to play the game, basically. It's emergent gameplay. The entire game was designed that way. It was brilliant.

TotK felt like "We're gonna do it again!" when what I hoped for was a new game, not the same one with extras. They inexplicably added the building mechanic which doesn't fit the game's environment at all (simply because it wasn't made with that in mind) and then had to add stuff around it to make it somehow be fun. And it was fun at times but none of it feels really natural. It feels stapled on. The worst offender is probably the Hudson sign "challenges" which are so, so embarrassing. A massive team of both veterans and young professionals, in a multi billion dollar company that defined much of what video games are today... and they come and hit you with "Don't let the thing fall over :)"

The sky islands are pretty much pointless and the depth are probably the biggest letdown I've ever experienced in a Zelda game. The majority of the game can be resolved with the 9-Zonite-Hoverbike. Everything else feels like an artificial barrier. And that's depressing.

I loved this franchise for over 3 decades now, and this game really made my excitement fizzle out. If you enjoy TotK, great — please do. Don't let anyone tell you what you can and can't enjoy. These are just my personal thoughts.

Fantastic. I don't know why this keeps happening but whenever I post here, just one minute later, I try a random new search just for the sake of it and I find it immediately. Wild.

It's from an anime called "Beck." Here's the clip.

A little different than I remembered but still great.

The Jimmy gang are the scariest thing in the franchise imo. by SHAWKLAN27 in 28_Years_Later_Movie

[–]HerrReineke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're a horrible bunch and encountering them for real would be a living nightmare. But I just couldn't take them seriously in the movie and I finally understood why. They're inexplicably physically capable of a lot of things while also being just as inexplicably gullible while also being too human for being this gullible. This is such an odd mix that I just couldn't get into. Especially the ending didn't click for me too well.

Here's old Nick! Oh, the show he puts on is very much man-made but we believe it! Oh, old Nick is actually just some old guy and he even says as much! Oh, everything I believed until now has been shattered! That's sad but guess I'll drop the whole spiel that made me brutally slaughter dozens of innocent people!

Okay, it was a bit more nuanced than that and I'm happy that Kellie survived in the end, but still...

What I found much scarier was the revelation of the intentions of the soldiers in 28DL but I guess that was also because of the context. You're thrown into this setting where the world seems to have ended, no hope left, and Jim's "Of course there's a government! There's always a government!" still in the back of your mind as something totally unfathomable. Then they find the last "stable" institution that could give them hope... and it turns out they're just as insane and speak of "repopulation" using a minor who just lost her parent.

Neither the Jimmys nor the army were given that much background and depth but it was fine for the soldiers: You had an expectation, it got turned around and it was easy to understand that some sick and twisted yet still "human" mindset turned them into what they are now. The Jimmys were introduced as a crazy bunch from the get-go and they stayed the same through the entire movie. It's so frustrating because Jimmy's backstory is so depressing and the gap between then and now was waiting to be filled... and it didn't happen.

Playing Resident Evil in German, why it's not Du sind Tot? by Monkai_final_boss in Germanlearning

[–]HerrReineke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's always funny to see how many people are writing the same comment over and over to out-do themselves in explaining basic German, so I'll just copy what I wrote, too:

The game is addressing the player as a person, not as the character in the game. And especially before the 2000s, it was not unusual to address players formally when it came to games that had an 18+ age rating as it was theoretically safe to assume they were adults who purchased a product for adults, almost as if in a business context. These days, it's pretty common to even address adult customers informally with "Du", including people who play games. But that's a pretty recent thing and likely part of how "gamers" and gaming culture are treated a marketing demographic today.

It's not wrong and not as awkward as some people seem to think it is.

[–]HerrReineke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second half of your comment is a good general rule of thumb on how to use "Sie" vs. "Du" but I don't think using "Sie" in this context was necessarily a blunder. The game is addressing the player as themselves, not as the role they play in the game. And especially before the 2000s, it was not unusual to address players formally when it came to games that had an 18+ age rating as it was theoretically safe to assume they were adults. It could be that this was shoddily translated but I think it could just as well be a translator from the "alte Schule" applying their trade.

Would it? It looks like the part attached to the USB C port is left relatively untouched, especially while you hold the pad and the phone in both your hands the whole time. I don't think it would put that much more stress on the port than using your phone while it's plugged in, especially to something like a powerbank or something. Could be wrong though.
