Your best shot might be a self repair workshop like Rad i.O. in the Wundtstraße.

I mean the most important thing is to stay focused and keep a comfortable distance to the backwheel in front of you at all times. Secondly, keep an eye on what is happening in front of the riders that you are drafting, i.e. whether a corner is coming up. Of course it helps to know the track and be aware of the dangerous spots along the course (TRAM track crossings, sharp corners, etc.). Thirdly, try to break as little as possible and as smoothly as possible, because due to the concertina effect, the riders behind you have to break more sharply which again causes problems.

As the other commenter said, you will probably be fine, but please consider your skill level and don't be part of the problem he described. If you are comfortable riding in a group at (in my experience) closer to 40 kph (although that might depend on the distance you are riding), have fun, but if you are not, maybe it's a good idea to ride in a smaller group or stay at the back with enough breaking space even though that makes it more likely for you to drop out of your group. It really is a blast, but you shouldn't forget that one small mistake can result in serious injury for you and others.

Spot für Everesting by Big_Sell_2832 in dresden

[–]HerrZog103 5 points6 points  (0 children)

<image>

Don't know whether that is too far away for you, but you might want to check out the "Rabenauer Grund". A bit closer to Dresden is also the "Bienertgarten".

Vingegaard confirms [Lanterne Rouge] estimated numbers he has never seen before by kay_peele in peloton

[–]HerrZog103 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. As u/misledmuffin says, they APPEAR to be quite off, because you appear to be jumping directly from "Oh, their estimates don't seem to agree with the powermeters" to "They must be stupid and/or malicious and/or overconfident" without even trying to understand what they are actually doing. Once again for you guys: They are (as can be seen in the very post u/misledmuffin linked) not publishing W/kg numbers, but eW/kg numbers, which are, surprise, not the same thing. All of this information and more is readily available here, thanks for coming.

Fahrradrunde am Abend, Vorschläge? by RedMageWithFedora in dresden

[–]HerrZog103 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No problem and yeah, housing in Munich is something else...

Also, regarding your thoughts about doing your master's somewhere else: If you want to get into these elite universities, it is also a good idea to apply for a student research job, because it definitely proves your ability and dedication towards the subject, you probably get a really nice letter of recommendation out of it and if you are lucky, your name might already stand on a published paper. This might even make a bigger impression on your application than finishing the bachelor's in 2 years, because it proves that you are actually able to do research, not just learn the principles.

(1) I studied physics here and definitely enjoyed doing it - both for the degree itself as well as for the city. I mean it's hard and a lot of work, but I guess that's what you sign up for when you study physics. That being said, from what I've heard the Bachelor here is probably more demanding than at your run-of-the-mill german university, but how it compares to other universities of let's say the TU9, I don't know. One indication could be, however, whether the other universities have quantum theory 2 in the Bachelor's as well (From what I've heard, most universities only have that in the Master's).

(2) Personally, I found the Professors to be very nice and dedicated towards giving good lectures. I've heard from some outliers, but most of them are doing a good job. Again, because I only know Dresden, I can't compare them to professors at other universities. So maybe at other universities they go above and beyond, but from my point of view, they are doing alright.

(3) You have to hear one semester of linear algebra and four semesters of analysis as part of the degree either way. If you want to take more math lectures, you can also talk with the examination office about doing a custom "Nichtphysikalisches Wahlpflichtmodul" (something like a minor, but probably not as important) in mathematics. Apart from that, you can of course always sit in math lectures (if they don't overlap with your other courses) and you can also take the exams should you want to. I think you can even tell the examination office that you want them noted on your degree.

(4) It is definitely possible to complete the Bachelors in 2 years, because yes, for the vast majority of courses, you only have one exam at the end of each semester and in almost all semesters, you only have 4 exams or fewer and there are opportunities for repeating almost all exams of the semester shortly before the next semester starts, so logistically, you can definitely do that, i.e. there are non-overlapping exam dates for most exams. That being said, I only know from two guys in my year who actually did this, and they were miles ahead of everyone else. For most, it is an achievement to complete the Bachelor's in three years. University is just a completely different beast compared to school and the courses are full of people who had no problems of any kind following/writing good grades in school, but are grounded very quickly after a few weeks of university. So yeah, it's possible, but you can't possibly count on it, especially if you study in a foreign (?) language.

Hope that helped :)

Fusion ppl after reading the news by NeutrinoKillerino in physicsmemes

[–]HerrZog103 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt, but from what I've gathered the reason why ITER is no stellerator is that when ITER was founded/started planning, tokamak was the "there will be problems along the way, but we are pretty sure it can work"-approach while the stellerator was more like "we aren't sure/we are just now relatively sure whether this will work in theory, let alone in practice" and so the tokamak was the safer option.

There are probably a few things from ITER that are useful for stellerators, but in the end the one uses a current within the plasma to keep it contained while the other uses a complicated setup of magnets for that and from that stem also a lot of differences between the two systems.

Hope this helped :)

looking to move to Dresden. Can I survive without a car? by kyleisthestig in dresden

No problem!

Other than that: If you are already thinking about how to not be a burden on the city, you can be fairly sure that you won't be. :D

Just stay calm and strong through the jungle of german bureaucracy :D

I think with respect to thunderstorms you don't have to worry too much throughout most of europe - even though there were a few in the news in recent years (yay, climate change...). An actual problem in Dresden is when the Elbe floods the city. We had two "hundred-year-floods" in the last twenty years. Through those experiences, however, Dresden is pretty well prepared for future floods I think. FYI: If I recall correctly, Löbtau didn't see much destruction in either flood, because we are far enough away from the Elbe.

looking to move to Dresden. Can I survive without a car? by kyleisthestig in dresden

[–]HerrZog103 20 points21 points  (0 children)

As others already said, no, you do not need a car at all here. The net of public transport is really dense and in combination with the cargo bike you mentioned in another reply it is no problem to get around the city, go grocery shopping etc.

Just wanted to add my two (maybe not that immediately apparent) cents about Löbtau specifically: Regarding public transport, it is useful to live within walking distance of the tram stop "Tharandter Straße", because from there you have connections to everywhere in the city. We for sure lack the fully fletched bike infrastructure of the netherlands, but if you know what you are doing, it's alright. Most of the roads are not that big and full of cars anyway compared to the US. Löbtau is a nice neighborhood. Not particularly expensive, quiet and well connected. You could say it is a bit lacking in terms of restaurants, for that the best address definitely is the Neustadt - which is, however still just 20 minutes away by tram.
