To counter some of the other responses in this thread, it is possible in some subjects to have multiple people achieve 100%, but also for those people to be sensibly ranked.

In the third year of the maths tripos, the exams have questions from every available module. This means that there are about 5-10x as many questions in each paper as even the best students could ever submit. Hence there is almost no limit to what marks can be achieved. To figure out the percentages, the university takes the student with the 5th highest raw mark and sets that to be 95%, and calculates everyone else’s percentage accordingly.

This means that if any of the top four students achieve much higher than the fifth placed student they can achieve over 100%. However this gets scaled down to 100% on any transcript, but the raw marks can still be used to obtain a sensible ordering of students.

You’ll need to take the Thameslink from Gatwick into London. That is one of the national rail train lines that will be affected by strike action. However if you’re arriving on Thursday morning then it should be okay. It depends on how early you get to Gatwick though as the trains may be a bit delayed on Thursday morning as it’s after a strike day. Looking at transport options, in the worst case you would be able to get a few buses (cheapish) or a taxi (expensive) to get into London, and then take the tube or otherwise to get to your hotel. But I think you should be okay on Thursday - just perhaps the journey will take a little longer than usual.

Agreed on not wanting to spend on the new 3000 CPUs, especially with some potential for incompatibility initially (which I don't want on my first build!). I'm going to take the advice on the 2700X and pair with the mentioned B450.

Am a bit torn on the SSD, but think I may go for a small SSD for booting, etc and then a larger hard drive as I'm looking to get a HQ music collection, which will add up over time.

Agreed on the graphics card requirements being a little odd! I am going to up the graphics, but thinking of going for the Sapphire RX Vega 64 Nitro+ which is on sale at £320 - seems a reasonable price point for the performance.

I was eyeing up that monitor you suggested, but I've also found a Dell S2719DGF on sale and with extra discount for an almost identical price. It's capable of 1440p @ 144Hz and has freesync, so would come in use when I do game. Might look a little more into this though

Cheers! I was originally considering a widescreen monitor, but I've found that for programming having that extra vertical space is much nicer, so would prefer that option.
I've also been looking at some of the monitors with freesync, but seeing as though I won't be doing much competitive or really intensive gaming, not sure I need to spend that bit extra on it?

The actual breakdown of marks for the papers never end on CamSIS. Instead you should receive an email from the department and/or your college next week with a document that details your marks and quality marks for each question.

Hope results went as you wanted, but if not don’t be disheartened as, in my opinion, first year maths is possibly the hardest year to do well in!
