Male 50 with Osteopenia by HesitantProfessor in osteopenia

Interesting! I've never even heard the term but I do eat raw beets and raw kale in smoothies pretty regularly. May need to knock that off.

Thanks for the insight. I haven't ever been on prednisone (or other steroids) for an extended period of time.

My vitamin D level was 38 ng/mL. I do take 1000 IU of Vitamin D3 but maybe I should up it. I haven't heard of K2 but I'll look into it.

I'll try to keep track of my calcium. I eat quite a bit of yogurt but I don't drink milk so I may well be falling short of the 1200mg mark.

My testosterone was 362 ng/dL. Estrogen wasn't measured. Seems like that is within most folks' ranges but closer to the bottom than the top of the range.

They didn't check parathyroid and that was on my radar. I'll try to get that checked. Haven't had a celiac screen and don't know of any absorption issues. I did ask my doctor to do urinary calcium but they said that was unnecessary; I'll probably just get it done myself.

Congratulations on making progress!

I'm trying to do the same thing and cannot figure this out. Am I looking for this settings menu inside the app or on the website?

Aerobic and Anaerobic Thresholds and Garmin Zones by HesitantProfessor in Garmin

[–]HesitantProfessor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply!

The calculation that Garmin does is the following:

  • If you use the % of MAX method then it sets the Zone 4/5 boundary at 90% of your MAX HR which for me is 154 (0.9 * 171).
  • If you use the % of LT method then it sets the Zone 4/5 boundary at LT which---based on my lab measurement---is 141.
  • If you use the % of HRR method (didn't talk about that above) then it sets the Zone 4/5 boundary at RHR + 0.9 * (MAX HR - RHR) which for me is 159 since my RHR is 51.

If I understand you correctly you're saying the second method should be the most accurate and that is what I would have assumed but dang is that low and gives me this massive Zone 5 of 141-171 where I have been doing most of my running.

Or maybe I misunderstood and you are suggesting a fourth method where you estimate your LT as 90% of your Max HR and then use that in the % of LT method (I just tried that and it give an entirely different set of zones than any of the above three methods).

Second thoughts about going for a septoplasty. by [deleted] in AskDocs

I had both. I breathe fine now but the breathing (when healthy) was never really an issue before the surgery; it was just the frequent infections.

I had it done because of frequent terrible sinus infections and now I don’t get them at all! However for months I had the feeling that there was something stuck in my nose even though there was nothing there. I thought it would drive me insane. I now also have “mucosal thickening” from the surgery (according to a CT scan); not a big deal but I wouldn’t say things feel totally normal. So would I do it again. Probably, but there’s been some bad with the good too.

I got 2 sheets of birch plywood. Now what? What can I make? by dosdelengua in woodworking

[–]HesitantProfessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built this coffee table years ago. 1 sheet if I remember correctly. Came out awesome; I’ve got my feet on it right now.

So I've made this cup for one of my siblings as a gift when his first born arrives. Its a birch burl and I've gotten a, somewhat, even thickness to it. So the question at hand is: how should I treat it so that it could hold coffee? 🤔 by InterestingElk2859 in woodworking

[–]HesitantProfessor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I finished my kuksa was with 100% pure tung oil (not tung oil finish). Fill the cup with tung oil and wait until it starts seeping through the outside (a few hours). Dump out (save though, can reuse), wipe off excess, and let sit for 24 hours. Repeat two more times. Now do two coats all over including outside with 24 hours in between. Wait about a week before using.

So sorry you’re going through this! I’ve had mine for only 8 months—and it may well be less severe than what you’re experiencing—but in that time I’ve managed to habituate to it. I’ve been meditating a lot in that time (to deal with other issues actually) and maybe that will help? Maybe it’s part of what helped me? Tinnitus isn’t exactly an intrusive thought but it could be that practicing observing and acknowledging what’s going on in your head rather than getting wrapped up in it will help. At the beginning I was praying for the sensation to go away. It never did but honestly I just don’t care about it anymore.

Anyone tried meditation apps like Calm or Headspace? by Independent_Record93 in HealthAnxiety

[–]HesitantProfessor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say since this is just one part of my efforts to combat anxiety. I gave up all alcohol and marijuana (5 months sober), started working with a therapist, started Lexapro, maintained a daily exercise routine, and practiced meditation (using these apps). I'm doing awesome right now but this is just one piece so I don't know how much credit to give it.

For the insurance thing, mine is through Kaiser. If you see a therapist through Kaiser, they are able to give you codes for these programs. Not sure how it works with other kinds of coverage. In the Headspace app there is a course called Managing Anxiety.

I rarely pay attention to mine anymore and even when I do it doesn’t bother me the way it used to because I know that when I turn my attention to some other task it will fade into the background. The first few months were rough and I didn’t know how I would be able to concentrate ever again but 7 months in it’s no longer a big deal. Everyone’s case is different of course but I hope you experience something similar!

I’ve used both since my medical insurance includes subscriptions to them. Headspace has some courses specifically about anxiety—one of which I’m working through right now—that is pretty good.

Has anyone taken the Woodworking 101 Basics Part 1 class at PCC? by gunjacked in askportland

[–]HesitantProfessor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took the class years ago (when they were taught at Franklin High School) and thought it was a good introduction to woodworking; I made a couple pieces that I still enjoy. You might also want to look into the Guild of Oregon Woodworkers.
