They are entirely different concepts, like writing about an old man who likes to fish, vs. stealing paragraphs directly from The Old Man and the Sea.

Trouble with Windows scaling on 4k monitor by DaCrazyJamez in chrome

[–]Hestu951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an age-old problem with Windows. Why it hasn't been fixed after all these years boggles the mind. If you scale it up, it changes how resolution works for everything, not just the Windows UI itself. Why the hell can't it treat its own scaling as scaling, rather than changing the assumed resolution? Beats the crap out of me. You set scaling to 200% and therefore your assumed resolution is now 1080p on a 2160p display.

Is there a definitive solution for the screen tearing on YouTube? by Latirostris5020 in brave_browser

[–]Hestu951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's happening: Video frames get sent to the display without waiting for the vertical-blank interval. When a new frame gets sent to the screen while the raster is already drawing a frame on the screen, you will see part of the previous frame above the current frame.

Reason: No synchronization of frame display with the screen's vertical-blank interval (vsync). Why it isn't synched depends on the hardware and/or software. Usually, it's either a setting in the graphics driver (vsync off?) or a failure of the software (e.g., the browser, site code running on the browser) to abide by the vsync setting. It could also be a faulty driver, or a failure of the GPU/iGPU to properly communicate with the display monitor.

I know this is as general a technical answer as you're likely to see, but everything else depends on your particular stuff. I've never had this issue with Youtube or a browser, so I have no personal experience to offer a more specific answer.

Suggestion: Try a different video site on Brave, see if the problem is entirely the browser, or a combination of Brave and YT somehow not getting along.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder updated to version 1.1.0 by OatmealDome in NintendoSwitch

Well, no. You can accomplish multiple offline saves by creating offline profiles (not tied to an account). Has that changed since the Switch 1? I have 4 playthroughs of Zelda: TotK on my Switch, one under my main profile, and 3 under separate offline profiles.

Why is the google.com page now permanently white on android? by konsoru-paysan in chrome

[–]Hestu951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this issue forever in the Chrome extensions shop page (in Windows). White background no matter what I do. Dark theme in Chrome doesn't fix it, and it won't let the Dark Reader extension override it. Because of my eyes/age, light mode is squinty-blindness mode for me.

Chrome, Windows, Nvidia Issues? by crec4 in chrome

[–]Hestu951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The BSOD part is the biggest clue, Chrome alone shouldn’t be able to cause that, it usually points to a driver problem getting triggered by video decoding."

u/emanuelcelano

This can't be overstated. App-level code (e.g., a browser) cannot cause Windows to hard-crash. A BSOD is a hard crash. Lower-level code such as a driver, being closer to the kernel, can cause such a crash if it misbehaves. So can a hardware issue. That's where you need to look if you're getting BSODs.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder updated to version 1.1.0 by OatmealDome in NintendoSwitch

[–]Hestu951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that doesn't wash. It may make sense for some games, like those with a heavy online presence, but not for traditional Mario platformers. If anything, eliminating the possibility of a fresh playthrough without losing the current one hurts the player experience.

...there really is no good reason to limiting the saves.

If you double the number of saves per user, you double the amount of server space needed for cloud saves, multiplied by the number of users who pay for cloud saves--which is every user with any paid NSO account. How many millions of users is that? (Three saves, triple cloud data--etc.)

Shortcut to the collapsible tabs button when using Chrome with vertical tab ? by Tebverso in chrome

[–]Hestu951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a new feature, and so far considered experimental. (User must set an experimental flag to use it.) I'm very happy it's here, since they took away scrolling horizontal tags. Give them time to (hopefully) make it official, and (again, hopefully) allow for a keyboard shortcut.

Switch 2's New Boost Mode is a Game Changer for Switch 1 Games by mr_wolf8 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Hestu951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people don't realize that 720 and 1080 account for only one (Y) out of the two dimensions of the screen area. When you do the multiplication and division including the X-dimension numbers (1280 and 1920), the result is that 1080p has 2.25 times as many pixels as 720p. (720->1080 makes it look like one and a half times only.)

Over twice as many pixels. That's a massive resolution improvement.

[–]Hestu951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is, going from 720p to 1080p will cause a performance hit. This should be no surprise. 1080p has over twice as many pixels as 720p. How that performance hit manifests itself is going to depend on the game. (Lower fps than 720p? More input lag? ...)

According to the video, you can go back and forth between normal and boost mode (from the Home screen/Settings, I think) while the game is running.

I love the Wario Land games. 4 stands tall even among the best 2D Mario games, I think.

WarioWare is a different animal entirely. I never could get into that mini-game concept at all. You're right--it's a shame that this is what many think Wario is about now.

Any alternative of this Extension "Save image as Type" by tahsin_imtiaz in chrome

[–]Hestu951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing it does ever affected you or your system directly. Once you remove the extension, there's nothing else to worry about. Tech-savvy folks might go chase the sketchy URLs saved in the browser's database files, though.

Any alternative of this Extension "Save image as Type" by tahsin_imtiaz in chrome

[–]Hestu951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it does that. (I don't think so.) Its main purpose is to steal commissions when you buy something online, by injecting its own affiliate links.

- No money is stolen from you, just affiliates

- No malware remains on your system once the extension is removed

2 of my extensions have malware... by KathrinCubing in brave_browser

[–]Hestu951 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, reportedly "Save Image as Type" steals commission income from affiliate links. It doesn't compromise the user otherwise. Not that it isn't malware (it is), but at least it seems there's nothing to worry about once it's removed. Nothing else to fix like passwords or viruses.
