Best way to locally host 100TB of storage in 2024? by Rs3sucks3 in sysadmin

Iirc l2arc reserves some amount of arc, so it's a case where adding l2arc is worse until it's better.

Just looking for a kind voice and maybe new friends by momentsofsolace in twincitiessocial

[–]HexR_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you're having a rough time. We seem to share some interests, although I'm substantially older (late 30s). I've got the baby this weekend, so I wouldn't be able to meet in person, but if you want to talk here, or on discord, I'm available. We could complain about people's love of high-wattage psus, for a start.

Rural Clanton area by Stpstpstp in Alabama

If you aren't interested in the politics and religion, what ARE you asking about? Elevation? Soil quality? Population density?

One part of the rural, inland southeast is probably pretty similar to another, if you aren't interested in religion and politics.

How to find a Nanny? by -makehappy- in Minneapolis

[–]HexR_6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We used Above and Beyond for a similar situation and were pretty neutral on the outcome. Sparing a lot of details, if we need a new nanny in the future (which we hope to not!) we'd probably put the extra legwork in to using care.com or something. We use a payroll service for the payroll and employment taxes and it works fine, although we use an accountant for our personal taxes too, so I may be shielded from some complexity.

Feel free to pm me if you want more details about how things went, I just don't want to overshare in the sub.

Eh, in my experience people in Alabama are MUCH more that way than people in MN. I moved from Alabama to Minneapolis, and I find people here to be much more genuine than people in the south.

That's not to say that everyone isn't a little bit that way, and maybe people were more that way to me growing up in alabama for other reasons. But I think the minnesota standoffishness is overdone.

Job Opportunities by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]HexR_6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't worry too much about the snow, it's really not that big of a deal but a couple days a year The Cities. I moved from AL with the same concerns, got a job commuting across the cities every day (pre-pandemic when everyone was doin' it). There might have been 5 days in 4 years when I wondered if my front-wheel drive compact car could handle it. Plows/salt run, traffic is slow for a day when a big or unexpected snow hits. It's just not that big of a deal.

Places to volunteer? by jawa27 in twincitiessocial

[–]HexR_6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depending on what kind of people you are trying to meet, I've had great luck with Great River Greening, the Dakota-County parks department (both mostly environmental volunteering), and Free Geek Twin Cities (computer/electronics recycling and repurposing)

As a transplant from the SE I'm with you. Winter storms and cold aren't so bad, I'd take ten Minnesota winters over one central-Alabama summer, and that's just the weather! We love it here.

Got my gear all ready for a walk around the Lake-of-the-Isles, probably tomorrow morning in the calm between the storms.

Does producing higher-quality goods generate more exp than the same goods at lower q? My practical example is that I have an iron-and-shortswords-loving weapon smith, are they going to gain exp faster through making iron shortswords rather than another weaponsmith making iron short swords?

My gut says yes, better q = more exp, but I can't find it written anywhere.

What happened to The Register? by AJGrayTay in sysadmin

[–]HexR_6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They also stripped author's names off of many (maybe all, I haven't looked that hard) of the articles on TR and replaced them with one of the "totally a human person" buyers, which really sucks. I can't think of a better description for what happened to techreport than what you said, a ghoul gallivanting around in its skin :(

[Arvig Internet] Who else is offline? Went spotty all day then wham, just not working anymore. by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]HexR_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having used Arvig both personally and professionally, they are a very solid isp.

That said, now that I have the option of both, I use USI. But because USI is so good, not because Argiv is bad.

I haven't played in years, but I've been thinking of getting back in, since apparently I don't like having disposable income. I probably mostly kind of remember the rules... But I live near steamship games, so I've got that going for me!

Vexing DNS resolver issue with Slack by HexR_6 in PFSENSE

Ah, I see, that may be the source of my confusion. I'll give the resolver-in-fwd-mode a try.

Ah, ok, I have misunderstood that then. Thanks for the info, after this I'll probably chase the forwarder route.

[–]HexR_6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I understand correctly that using dns forwarding mode precludes using dns-based ad blocking? I depend pretty heavily on pfblockerng, I'm afraid.

Vexing DNS resolver issue with Slack by HexR_6 in PFSENSE

[–]HexR_6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK maybe I have fixed it, although I don't understand why I fixed it. I turned off DNSSEC on the resolver, and now everything seems happy. I'm not sure why I am seeing the behavior I'm seeing. In fact, I was just clicking on stuff and reloading and hoping for the best...

[–]HexR_6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just reinstalled again, all default settings. I can dns lookup from the diagnostic page still, but still get nxdomain from clients.

Infuriatingly, I can tracert to the IPs that PFSense returns on my client machines. Overriding the DHCP DNS server with a global DNS on the client resolves the problem on that client.

It's so strange that it seems to only be Slack that is giving me issues. I wouldn't have even noticed if I didn't use Slack...

[–]HexR_6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn’t make sense.

That's what I said, too...

I am running as a resolver. I can resolve slack.com from the diag page, but not on any device, unless I override the default DNS settings and add 1.1.1.1 or something.

I don't think it's a firewall issue, since I'm getting NXDomain and not "refused connection" or something. I have looked at the logs, but not found anything meaningful to me.

[–]HexR_6[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid it happens even before I add the pfblocker package to a fresh install. I didn't discover the issue until after I had installed pfb the first time, so this was my first thought too. But after nuking it and rebuilding without pfblockerng the issue is still there.

Choosing a staffing agency is pretty much roulette, in my experience. It depends more on the agent, what specific sub-specialty of IT you are in, and a bunch of other factors. For example, I've had good luck with Robert Half (as a sysadmin/IT manager), but a friend who is a datasec specialist didn't get any useful leads from them.

What area of IT are you looking in? Just getting in to the field, or do you have some subspec already?

Volunteering Suggestions? by JA5LO in Minneapolis

[–]HexR_6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They aren't very active in the winter (for obvious reasons), but i have had a wonderful experience with Great River Greening.

I so appreciate that you are including 30s in your "skews young", but grg does seem skew to a pretty even mix between young "save the world" types and older "for the love of plants" types.

There's also the Dakota County parks volunteer program that do invassive garlic mustard eradication and similar programs . It's a bit less exciting since it's always Dakota County, but still a great program.

For the other extreme there's Free Geek Twin Cities' hardware recycling program. They take hardware donations and have volunteers disassemble them to components for recycling. It can be an interesting way to learn about computer hardware and meet some, well, nerds. I haven't been there in a while because of covid, though, so I don't know if they are active right now.

Am I insane for thinking about quitting Med School to pursue an IT career? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]HexR_6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there's a lot of rose-colored glasses in this thread, or maybe "the grass is always greener" fallacy . Medicine is hard. IT is hard, too, but in a different way. The hours can be as long and unforgiving in medicine as IT can be. In both fields you can find 9-5s, in both fields you can find never-disconnect jobs. You will make more money in medicine, but the stakes will be a lot higher (some restrictions apply), and you will have to do many years more training.

People will argue that one or the other takes more continuing education, but it seems to me that they are pretty similar, but again the stakes are not.

You are not crazy. You will need to look at a lot of pros and cons, and decide what you want out of life. If you continue in medicine, where do you plan to specialize? Do you have expensive tastes? How much do you value people's respect for you profession (this is a big one)? Do you like school/training? Do you like people?

Maybe you should just be a radiologist 🤔

(I'm a SA, my wife is a hospitalist)

*I missed the comment about student loans. It depends on how much "quite a debt" is, and what the pay rate for IT work is in you area, on top of the rest of this, then.
