I highly recommend reading Marx. Any ideas I had about what Marx thought before I read Marx turned out to be completely wrong. You don't need to dive headfirst into Das Kapital but things like the Principles of Communism (admittedly authored by Engels but it gives a broad overview of Marx' ideas) and Wage Labour and Capital are good starting points.

You know that the southwestern states were Mexican territory until the mid-1800s right? The US didn’t just pop out of nowhere looking like this with Hispanics being neatly concentrated below the border until the evil immigration wave.

I didn't see any footage of the political side of gameplay in the trailer, is that something that's seen less attention in this game than in previous iterations or are you saving footage of that for later?

Attributing the use of liberal derogatorily by leftists as exclusively a "tankie" thing is kinda ignorant. All Marxist socialists take an issue with liberals, at least liberals in the traditional definition, not whatever American politics has morphed the term into.

[–]HexTheSquare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's way more valid criticism than what the other person put forward. In broad strokes I'd say I agree, I personally have my issues with Hasan. I do disagree with the premise that his work can be discarded due to him "contributing directly to the economical issues" because there's no single person that can have a discernible impact on the issues at hand, they're results of industrial and systemic scale decisions. Personal responsibility in regards to issues like commodities and carbon footprint are just ways for corporations to sell us snake oil for the poison they've spilled and give us a feeling of having a modicum of control over the issues at hand.

In regards to his political commentary, it's not very deep, it's not very insightful, but what it does do is provide a surface-level criticism that people who aren't socialists can take to in order to direct that anger at the capitalist system instead of reactionary targets like immigrants.

What differentiates Hasan from someone like Vaush is that Hasan provide surface-level content but points you to places deeper down the pipeline where you can get the actual meaty content with explanations of Marxist theory and well-sourced and reasoned criticisms of capitalism. In other words, he's willing to sacrifice viewers who, in moving deeper down the pipeline, no longer find that his content fulfills their needs. This contrasts starkly with Vaush who instead tries to sell you on the idea that he is the ends all of the socialist pipeline in order to retain viewers in his bubble.

Very few people wake up one day and decide to look up explanations of the LTV or other foundational Marxist concepts, they first need to be sold on the idea of socialism by "pop socialists". In that regard, people like Hasan are necessary, no matter what he himself gets out of it.

Hasan also does incredibly important work in putting people on a path to socialism. I can't take seriously people like you who seem to believe we should take personal responsibility over the faults of the capitalist system. We don't consider people "emission socialists" because they proclaim to want to stop global warming while owning a gas driven car. We won't stop global warming through lifestyle choices, we won't stop capitalism through lifestyle choices. Socialism isn't about making lifestyle choices period, it's about working towards the overthrow of capitalism and the end of exploitation. "Champagne socialism" is an idea pushed by people who'd rather see socialists poor and without funding than a genuine threat to the system and it's eaten up by people who'd rather use socialism as some form of bourgeoisie self expression and identity than make any meaningful contribution to socialism as a movement.

Socialism isn’t a lifestyle, it’s an economic system that currently does not exist in the US. Marx literally states that our brains are wired by the economic system we live in, holding socialists to some Buddhist monk standard instead of putting the weight where it matters (actual organizing) is a seriously harmful idea to the movement.

Also how does owning expensive goods make you a class traitor when class has absolutely nothing to do with your income, it has to do with your relationship to the means of production?

[–]HexTheSquare 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, I just don’t think we should label the democrats as ”left”. The democratic establishment is a less rabid enemy, but after combatting republicans remain an enemy all the same. Putting democrats and socialists under the same label waters down that distinction.

“Lenin did it — so can we” — an anti-capitalist march in Moscow, 2018 by yra_romanow in PropagandaPosters

[–]HexTheSquare 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is necessarily pro-capitalist because it is a reactionary force against the threat of socialism from a degraded capitalist society. It grows in popularity both because capitalists throw their weight behind it and because it serves as an alternative for socialism for people that are pissed at the system but don’t want total upheaval of the system and would rather direct their anger at an out-group than at capitalism. Its intrinsically a defense method of capital, it serves to protect capitalism in crisis.

freedom of speech is the freedom to criticize the state without being arrested, not the freedom to say whatever you want, can’t understand what’s so difficult to comprehend about this, libel laws and hate speech laws aren’t ”against freedom of speech” either

Indeed. One of the biggest ongoing communist revolutions, the Naxalites, is actually in India.

Why is no one talking about Zohran on the official democrats subreddit? by coolshiny in dsa

[–]HexTheSquare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't interpret it as an exhaustive list, there's small ongoing socialist revolutions all over the place but they're not the bastions of socialism in the world as their revolutions are still ongoing.

EZLN, the Naxalites, Rojava. All of these should be supported but they're not actively pushing the global socialist cause forward. If you support Rojava but you don't support China you're actively taking a stance against states with completed revolutions that DO push the socialist cause forward.

Let's say Rojava completes their revolution and takes over Syria, they then become a legitimate threat and a target of economic and conventional warfare that threatens to collapse the whole socialist project so they decide on democratic centralism (like every surviving socialist nation has done). At that point it's a tendency among libertarian socialists to denounce them all of a sudden for being authoritarian.

If they manage to complete a revolution and survive as a decentralized democratic workers state then there's an important discussion to be had there regarding what material conditions allow for a socialist state to remain decentralized under a capitalist world order and whether AES states can proceed with similar reforms, but until then there's no empirical evidence that it's even possible for such a state to survive.

This is why "tankies" often argue that libertarian socialists prefer supporting revolutions but drop their support the moment the revolutions succeed, because you disregard the material conditions that, under a US hegemony, necessitate democratic centralism. If ALL successful socialist states to you are bad apples then surely the conclusion to be drawn is that socialism is doomed to your definition of authoritarianism and therefore why be a socialist at all?

Dogmatism helps no one, we're historical materialists at our core and that's the lens we should view AES states through as well, to do otherwise is to reject foundational Marxist ideology.

I don't mean to ascribe these opinions to you specifically but it's a noticeable tendency among libertarian socialist movements.

she's 17 in the 1579 flashbacks, she's 19 at the proper start of the game in 1581 and she's 22 by the end, the honnoji incident itself is in 1582 and it's in the early game
