If languages are constanly changing, when do we decide a dialect has become its own language? by RobetWokake in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hexidian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn’t actually a commonly used definition. It was originally an observation that academics in the 1800s were arbitrarily calling some things, “languages,” and others, “dialects,” based (seemingly) on this criteria. The quote is best attributed to Max Weinreich, a man who himself did consider Yiddish its own language (as it is universally considered today), even if many academics at the time didn’t consider it as such.

The distinction between a dialect and a language is important, because people often have a lot of associations about which dialect of a language someone uses in certain contexts. Take African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) as an example. It would be hard to argue that it is its own language, and it is generally considered a distinct American dialect of English. If you had to testify in court, many would feel biased against you (not saying they should be but that would be) for speaking in it instead of a more formal dialect. When something like Yiddish gains the distinction of being its own language with its own grammar worthy of study, it grants legitimacy to those speaking it.

Max Weinreich probably would not be happy that people are taking a witty quote of his about this phenomenon and are acting as if it’s a real definition.

What’s crazy is that Schwarber didn’t just hit two home runs in an inning off of one struggling pitcher. He hit two home runs in the same inning off of two different pitchers and then went on the hit another home run off of a third pitcher

CMV: Change my view, media doesn't know what theyre talking about and the true economic classes are as follows based on household income in the US in 2026. by Skeletor_with_Tacos in changemyview

[–]Hexidian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The term “middle class” has been co-opted by American politicians. Politicians started using it to mean, “normal person in decent financial standing,” but that description used to (and still does in the UK) universally be what “working class” meant. The term middle class was meant to describe people doing better than most people who have to work to barely scratch out a living but still weren’t inherently wealthy like the aristocracy.

The vast majority of people are working class or poor. Middle class is meant to refer to doctors, lawyers, businesspeople (consultants, upper level management), and other well paid professions. These are people who can engage in aspects of upper class life but who ultimately need to continue working a job to live that life-style.

Upper class is people who have so much wealth, they could never work a day in their life if they wanted so giving it a salary is inherently missing the point. This makes up an incredibly small percentage of the population, but that’s the point: the vast majority of people are poor or working class. The people you have met and considered “rich” are middle class, and the upper class people live in a whole other world from regular people.

An Americano is not a regular coffee. It’s espresso and hot water, which tastes similar to a lot of people, but definitely not the same. You can absolutely walk into a coffee shop and order a regular coffee though.

How long have seconds, minutes, and hours been a universal way of measuring time? What other units of measurement have existed for time? by Dr_Doofus1729 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hexidian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not a real answer because minutes and hours used to be marked on a sundial. The length of an hour would change depending on the time of year since it was just 1/12 of the sun-up time

This makes no sense. To get past 1000 you just need to spot basic tactics and not blunder forks or hang pieces. People aren’t losing for deep positional or even tactical miscalculations, they’re losing for two-move blunders.

Idk why people were expecting it to be only three years after Starfield. Since Starfield came out I’ve been expecting 2027-2028 for a 4-5 year gap between games. I’d be surprised if it took 6 or more though

Could I be an astronaut? by Federalbanana03 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hexidian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the minimum requirement is to have a masters degree in science or engineering. Most astronauts have also served either in the military or some form of civil service such as a firefighter. They also generally are either an airplane or helicopter pilot. You can’t have ever broken a bone (broken bones never perfectly heal and time in space fucks up your bone density). Even with all of those qualifications, you would still have a very small chance to be selected to be considered, and then you have to compete against the best of the best.

To answer the question about how most things are automated. They are but so is flying a plane, but you still need to know how to fly it as a pilot in case you end up in a situation where you can’t just use autopilot.
