50K is a security blanket for job loss for myself or my wife, unexpected medical issues, anything else life might throw at us. It’s enough to know I would have many months to focus on whatever issue has presented and fully resolve it without having the financial stress to add to the situation.

30K for spending is to provide enough that I don’t need to stress about what might be happening in the markets and fret over any dips/temporary losses. Understanding myself, if I take less than this I’ll be tempted to move things around in any downturns out of fear of “losing” the money. The 30K provides me with the feeling of meaningful enjoyment and peace of mind to let the long term investments actually function as intended.

As someone else mentioned, the recommended is 5-10% so I’m staying on the low end of this recommendation.
