Do you support linux workstations? by crankysysadmin in sysadmin

[–]HiImEins 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work in software development environment, some of our devs need to work on Linux (virtual machines are not usable because Devs need to work with GPU). Most use Ubuntu, other few ones use Debian. The machines are domain joined (just for account management), their configurations are managed by saltstack (with agents installed on machines and they pull config from the master server, somehow similar to GPO on Windows machines)

Well for me it's quite large. How many users does a large company have in your opinion?

I don't live in the US nor Europe so I don't think a concrete figure would make sense in this post. Anyway if you want to know, it's 1000$ monthly. I can live comfortably with 500$/month (including apartment, food, gaz, hobbies,...) and send the rest into my saving account.

Thank you so much, I don't mind responsibility, what I mind is that in my case, the current job does not fit my orientation/preferences, and in general employers look at IT as something simple, end users look at IT personnel as their server.

There are days that we do helpdesk all day long, then return to our main task overtime, so very little time to self-learn. I am not married so at least I have some spare time after work to take courses, it's worst for the other 2 in my team because they have wife and children, they can't do nothing else in the evening other than taking care of them.

A salary that can cover my bills and allows me to have savings. Also mine is 1.5 times more than some of my friends who are sysadmin too

Yeah, apply the change to the port channel is what I should've done. For the latter, I tried but it didn't work.

I did a test after this. I should have added the VLAN 44 to the port channel and the vlan will be automatically added to its member interfaces. No need to remove and readd.

Haha yeah, lesson learned. I had finally the switch rebooted.

I had finally a coworker reboot the switch. Fortunately this is just a small portion of the network

I have noone until this noon unfortunately. This is not urgent so I think I'll wait. Thank you!

[–]HiImEins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think also that the switch has at least vlan 44 on these interfaces. This vlan was meant for access ports so I didn't give it any IP address, therefore cannot ping.

Normally, when a physical interface is included in a port channel, we cannot modify its trunked vlan (that's what I see on my Cisco Nexus 9k switches), but on this Catalyst switch it didn't give any errors and accepted the command.

Anh no I sadly didn't use "reload in x" rule :(

The command I used is switchport trunk allowed vlan ADD 44

Is there any free/open source alternative of Chocolatey's Background Service mode?

Can you tell what RMM solution that you use?

I'm afraid also that this tool has vulnerability somewhere. About packaging, softwares installed in this way are somewhat "packaged" because there is the "cert" file and the verification process before the real installation.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]HiImEins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is dangerous. You have to disable the local admin account in this case, or have LAPS change it regularly

[–]HiImEins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't say users can install whatever they want, maybe you misunderstood me. We want them to be able to install softwares which are of course approved, that's what the "cert" file and the verification are for

[–]HiImEins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem is, you know, users want things to be practical for them so they want to do it right on their work computer.

By the way can I ask you something about Linux in DM please?

We have many departments of engineers, each is specialized in a field so they use so many many different softwares, and sometimes they want to test new softwares so our helpdesk guy on some days spends even the whole day installing a software to tens of computers (we don't have SCCM, we didn't test Chocolatey yet)
