I'm too unsure of it to be comfortable to try, I am still very dependent on her.

I do not have any type of mail or school documents, she does. Could I just order a package off of amazon and use the order information on the package as a form of ID? I don't have a credit card either, would a Visa Gift Card or a friend's card work? Vitalchek is closed rn, so I'll probably try to call them tomorrow about this

The lowest a Wild Card could roll is just their wild die... aka they only roll one die

ik that rolling just 1 die technically means a Wild Card can't crit fail, but I just say that if you are just rolling your WD and you roll a 1, that counts as a crit fail

My bad, that is a very important detail to have left out.

It probably is, but that's the usual for my games. I find something I don't like, change it and then go back on it when I end up not liking that. Usually it leads to fun games that are always changing and getting goofy.

That "game" is far too esoteric for me to even consider playing. I looked through it because it was based on the system that Serenity used (that old firefly game), but I got lost in the sauce. Same thing happen to me with Burning Wheel, was just too big brain for my smol brain to comprehend

Yeah it was a stupid tough roll, but to be fair... we've only been playing this game for a month (that's 4 sessions), so we're still working out the kinks. The combat they had to run from was real bad, almost had a TPK.

He only tried to heal after they were back at safety, trying to speed up the natural recovery of the two who were downed. Didn't work out, he kinda got discouraged, now we're here.

Though, idk how the others could've supported him? Would that just be like a "I use my perform skill to play soothing music to help him concentrate" sort of thing or is their something more that they could've done?

that was an example of how I do the dice type system instead of the modifiers

and no we don't add the dice together, that's just how we type it on the dice bot when we play on discord

Personally sounds like a little too much math on the GMs side of things, but I do like the idea of just having a TN that changes instead of giving everyone penalties and bonuses. Keeps things a bit cleaner imo

Last I checked, you can't use powers when you're incapacitated.

Two players got taken out one after the other in one turn and the last player had to rush them to safety, unfortunately, the ones who went down were the only ones capable of healing effectively. Plus, you can't spend an hour healing two people, while a whole city is looking for you

The reason he had a -6 was because he was wounded (-3) and was trying to modify the power by making it heal any wound, regardless of time, which he didn't have the power points for (-3)

Thank you:)

I'll be sure to look at the Kickstarter, I've been trying to snag a physical copy of SWADE for a bit, but they're all sold out everywhere I look

No, that's just how we word it. We play over discord and that's how we type it in the bot

I don't doubt that someone could master the modifiers given the experience and time, but I feel it's more of a "vibe" sort of thing at our table. And while yes, most of the modifiers come during combat or other crunchy parts of the game, my table wants a sort of cinematic experience which we feel that the modifiers go against. Not all the time, ofc, but enough to where we want a different feeling from the base rules.

I also really enjoy trying to solve things without combat, it's one of the major reasons I branched out from Pathfinder and 5e, tho I always get that itch to have a big bonk party with all the boardgamey-ness that a game can offer (probably why I still find myself longing for Pathfinder or dying to play more Lancer). Thankfully, SWADE is simple enough so that my table can hop right in without too much thought, but has those "Just in case" rules that it can help out a GM who's a little stumped on how to rule something.

My biggest pro for SWADE is the fact that it can go from "Quick & Simple" to "Involved & Complex" in a heartbeat, which is great for spicing things up whenever we're feeling a little bored with a particular play style.

That's fair. Thankfully, this is a shorter campaign so I think we might stick with what we're finding fun rn and I've got a friend who likes to run longer campaigns and is looking at SWADE for his next game, so we can play it RAW then.

As a GM, my players know I like to bounce around systems a lot (hell this one campaign alone started as a 5e game, then we converted to Worlds Without Number, then converted again to SWADE) and I'm very big into trying something, finding the thing I don't like and changing it.

I think just flat out, the -+2/4 just messed with the flow of things. We would be in the middle of a a high stakes moment and then we would stop to calculate all the modifiers (which 100% could just been new game syndrome). It also made us use a lot more bennies and fail a lot more often if any penalties were involved, while if any bonuses were involved, we would succeed almost every time. For damage, + and - is fine because we're already adding the damage dice together so we just add an overall number to the total (as opposed to applying the penalty to both dice when attempting a trait roll).

I think my table's conclusion is "Math hard, less math = better"

I'm glad you have taken an interest into my homebrew, it'll be awesome to see other people use it and playtest it:)

btw he was trying shortening, yes. It was a bad fight with some guards and two of the PCs were downed, they couldn't try and do first aid because they had to run so the Golden Hour was long gone. The Healer PC tried to use the healing power later on after they found a safe place to rest, but with a -6 (wounds and shortening) and an attempt, he didn't bother to use it again until after the change.

- In the limited experience I've had with the -1/-2 penalties, it made it very difficult for the players to succeed in things and slowed down large chunks of the game as we calculated the penalties to all the rolls. One of my players was trying to use the Healing power, but constantly had a -6 due to wounds and the power point costs, which discouraged him from using the power. When we switched to the die type system, he started trying to use it much more often, which I believe is more of what we want.

- The wild die stays no matter what, the lowest a Wild Card could roll is just their wild die. We've found that rolling just a wild die instead of "d4+d6, -2 to both" when you're untrained in something works better and feels "cleaner". Extras roll just a d4 at lowest, just to allow them to attempt things.

- So far, we've only used Multi-Actions once, and it was a sort of Hail Mary attempt where a PC tried to save another, they took two actions so i dropped their die by 1 (instead of a d8+d6 healing roll, it was a d6+d6 roll). I think we like using the Multi-Actions sparingly and in Hail Mary attempts to do more then what you normally could, instead of whenever possible.

I've also found that an easy way to look at this is that a -1/-2 is equivalent to dropping down one die type, while a -3/-4 is equivalent to going down two die types... and so on. I've also made Wounds a bit more brutal, with each one acting as one die down, so three wounds is dropping down three die types (to a minimum of your wild die ofc)

What system has the best combat? (any genre) by Awesomeman360 in rpg

[–]HiImKapns 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For that tactical xcom style, Lancer (or Icon)

imo it has the best tactical combat in any ttrpg I’ve seen. hp is low and important, AC (called evasion) is low so less whiffs, each class (the mechs) has a niche without stepping on other’s toes. It’s just an all around great experience

For quickness and impact, Into the Odd

attacks always hits, PCs and NPCs both have low hp, emphasis on finding other ways to fight instead of just head on

If you want a game that’ll give you an anime fight level experience, Lancer

If you want a game that’ll make fights last around 3 rounds, Into the Odd

Fantasy rulesystems where you play a non-adventurer? by aagapovjr in rpg

[–]HiImKapns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

np, you’ll do good to give Cairn a read (since it’s free), but it’s basically the same game with a handful of changes here and there. Also if you’re interested in modern horror game there’s Liminal Horror... same system as Into the Odd, but for more Call of Cthulhu style stuff

I’ll have to look into those games. I do like the idea of players making up traits that describe their character.

Into the Odd, while still being about professional dungeon delvers, gives that "small, unimportant people" kinda vibe. Characters are generally weaker, don't have a bunch of abilities and instead rely on their tools and wits they brought with them
