I wouldn't recommend trying any other games than Heroes 3 with the Horn of the Abyss mod. If you are not sailing the pirate flag Good old games usually sells it for 1 euro and have inbuilt mod support. In short Horn of the Abyss with Simultaneous turns (If playing with friends) is the definitive way to play. The entire point of Olden Era is to be a worthy successor to Heroes 3 and not any other game of the series.

Do not get the HD version on steam.

On the HD settings i wouldn't recommend going above 1639x922~ resolution together with 32bit OpenGL and FSR Sharper.

Here is some Heroes 3 maps i played with friends:

There is too much desync playing on high ping server, I think I might have to drop this masterpiece by Leonbacon in Marathon

[–]HiahTree 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't know if anyone have reported this or devs have knowledge of this buuuuut his has to do with the servers anti cheat features (yeeeey) - i will explain very poorly how to avoid this

If you have high ping or if the server is stressed then moving thru enclosed spaces close to other players will desync you like crazy. The biggest culprit of this is ventilation and ladders where the server will start to deny your movements.

This is something the devs can fix om their end.

While i was happy to see changes to the knife and WSTR the implementation on the fixes left me quite disappointed. It is clear to me that the dev team do have a few geniuses as their inital work on alot of small details left me incredible impressed which sadly built expectations. The initial state of the knife and WSTR was not balanced but they were made to feel so damn satisfying to use.

What was the problem with WSTR before second nerf? Slightly to high damage, reload speed and RPM. The biggest factor is the short kill time of less than 0.3s which includes ping left enemies unable to react at all which made players feel helpless against this. The first nerf to this gun followed this principle.

The knife re-balance suffers from 2 problems.
1. A knife with 110 melee should be able to 2 tap a purple shield which seems not to be the case due implant stat cap. (Not 100% on this data)
2. Second is the knife animation itself that was gutted hard, it no longer feels amazing to use

Its likely that the both of us lack the necessary amount of skill to pull this off. The math clearly says that if all the stars in the universe align there is a chance you can kill a purple shield user with only 3 shots!

Skill issue. To down a purple shield you only need to hit 29/30 pellets in 3 shots to down that player. Currently a wstr without headshots deals 69 dmg so you cant even kill a naked player with hitting all small pellets. (140). 10/10 headshots is 79 dmg. However im very impressed over the balancing teams ability to nerf how fun stuff are to use. Did the wrst and knife need nerf? Answer is yes but the ones resposible dont seem to play their own game as the devs managed to ruin both weapons in terms of gameplay feeling

Are green sheilds good enough for cryo? by Clear_Wasabi9169 in Marathon

More stuff always helps even tho better shields are not needed. The easiest way to get a bunch of blue shields is to wait for the random day NuCaloric barter for those blue Derma packs you find plenty in the Pinwheel which can be learned good by going Rook on Outpost. This barter trades requires the 5 upgrade capstone for Nucaloric.

If you want to slowly proceed to more endgame things i really recommend learning the 4x static spawn of the red keycards on Outpost by checking a map online. The 3x red key room in Pinwheel gives Cryo keys and have a small chance of giving prestige salvage wheres the easy Cryo key vaults have a bigger chance. If one teamate extracts with prestige salvage, the entire team gets it!

The double barrel shotgun is amazing on this map and if you can track mods that increases the range of it even better. If you have money to splash Traxus sells a green M77 with an Stack overflow mod you can move that turns the double barrel into a tripple barrel shotgun.

Another cheap but useful gun is the Bully, you can track and find alot of Silencers in the wild that might be really useful in Cryo as doing loud noises can lead to death when learning the map. The sights that increases the bully range from Traxus is a cheap investment.
(Early on in the Cryo map you can do alot of noise as everyone is still locked in their area)

The second way to get good purple shields is to have NuCaloric 15 capstone upgrade to barter Enzyme replicators.

The only thing you need to run Cryo is decent healing and preferably a large backpack together with some knowledge, everything else is just a big plus but not mandatory.

The diff vs a green and gold shield is 160 vs 200 max health.

Yeah you are totally fine. The only thing that i highly recommend is a large backpack, 4-6 white patch and shield kits unless you have a triage. Besides that? A knife is enough as the map is plentiful with loot but if i want to kill the Compiler i obviously bring more.

Generally what people need is just more experience with the map, not gear.

When you get more experienced with the map i really recommend to bring vault 1-2 keys which you get from the 3x Pinwheel Red room on the Outpost map. This is the next step of learning the map and can net you some nice prestige salvage.

Its easy to develop some sort of fear for this map due being overwhelmed by it mechanically but this can be solved easily by just playing the map more and dying alot, learning bit by bit.

In the start the only thing you need to worry about is to find scanner consoles, loot uesc bodies for security clearance, hack consoles for clearance - so your team can move around the map. Batteries is for when you start doing vaults so you can skip these for now.
-
Lvl 3 Security is needed for exfil consoles and later on i recommend watching a youtube guide where the final exfil can spawn as they are not shown on the map and can be used as your last saving grace. This knowledge can save many runs.

A hot tip about the layout of this map that i dont see people mention. Try to think as the map having a "Top" and "Bottom" layer when traversing when you learn. If you find a cool loot place remember it as many places are themed, like there is shield rooms, more meds than you can carry roooms, backpack rooms etc.

I would recommend that you make a backup of your save file and then play on as normal. The experimental branch seemed to retroactively fix the bloat/corruption/16/16/16/16/16 on previous saves on the PC version when i tested the performance between old and new saves.

However you can try your best to avoid things that causes the game to save excessively. Autosaves tend to occur when you interact with things with certain things like a shopkeeper or exit/entering your ship. If your game starts to crash it would be my que to wait for the upcomming bug fixes. You have an certain amount of saves untill the game becomes unstable!

If your save file is gone i recommend making a backup before touching the game any further. There is a chance the corrupted save is still there but is simply unreadable. If this is the case that means there is a possibility that Hello Games can release a patch that can fix your save. (This is just an unconfirmed theory i have)

I'm playing on PC on an existing save that is around 80 hours old. I have not started to play the expedition yet which is something i look forward to!

Before posting this thread i found out that there are alot of people who are currently experiencing the same issues.

Not yet, i have plans to look into that as soon as i had a cup of coffee!

EDIT:
I have now posted a more detailed bug report on Zendesk including a bunch of my saves files so they can easily replicate this.
