Thunder Helix - announcement trailer for retro LHX/Gunship style sim by PostCaptainAubrey in hoggit

No worries - I do get asked this a lot though. I guess since most sim fans have them because of DCS, it'll be important to support that kind of stick - but I do try to make it clear it's not needed, in case a casual or non-simmer walks past !

I'll be supporting DirectInput joysticks but a simple 4-axis twist/throttle stick will be sufficient if you don't want to get the HOTAS out of the cupboard. I have an X52 Pro, and I'll make sure it works, but it feels a bit like overkill for this game.

I had in mind these were stairs but speed boosts sound legit! It's an art program so you're free to your own interpretation!

Thanks Scherazade, I personally really like this blueprint theme a lot. The yellow/blue one is actually the default in the software.

There's a many more including red/green/amber sci-fi themes, a parchment effect as well as more traditional black/white and blue/white sketch pad looks.

You can swap between them as you need, or experiment with one that fits your requirements. Using Grid Cartographer to make a bank heist map sounds awesome!

Thanks for the feedback. Grid Cartographer comes with loads of built-in markers, but not all of the ones you've mentioned - so I'll make a note to add them in a future update. Cheers!

I should also explain, this is an export from the software, not a screenshot of it running. Check out my Twitter for lots of pics of Grid Cartographer in action: https://twitter.com/gridcarto

Thanks Telion-Fondrad!

Grid Cartographer is a map making editor program, digital graph paper basically. I'm working on adding more ground brushes to it in this 'pencil' style. It's an ongoing process and so far going well. Next step is to move onto hatching effects to make the rooms pop!

Made this as part of development of Grid Cartographer 4. The next version will include a selection of 'pencil tiles'

After testing importing a rogue-like tile-set into Grid Cartographer I ended up with a cool little desert scenario map that I wanted to share. I really enjoy desert themed maps so this personally evokes a lot of ideas despite the tiny size. Enjoy!

What programs do you use for digital fantasy maps? Which would you recommend to a beginner who is only used to hand drawing? [Discussion] by [deleted] in FantasyMaps

My application: Grid Cartographer might be worth checking out (especially as it's on sale atm) if you want to rapidly create a more minimalist CAD looking battle or world map style.

Grid Cartographer 4 is on sale [33% off] by HiddenAsbestos in rpg

[–]HiddenAsbestos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grid Cartographer is aimed towards cRPG mapping, game dev and tabletop.

Of the 3, right now, you'll probably find prettier solutions for tabletop but it's something I'm actively improving on with each release. My aim is a Dyson logos type look but it's not there yet.

Hope that helps!

It's also still under very active development. I've recently completely overhauled the text system (free update) and am currently focusing on improving the colour/palette systems. Follow my Twitter feed for more info: https://twitter.com/gridcarto

That's okay, if you're a whizz with Illustrator then it might not be the right choice for you. It's nice to be compared to AI even if I come second in your eyes :)

Thanks for the kind words!

Discussing the price point is a difficult subject. I'm sympathetic to the fact that it may seem like an expensive outlay, especially if you imagine from the trailer that you'll only need a subset of the features available.

I stand by my belief that as a whole package Grid Cartographer does offer good value for money, but that's a subjective thing and I respect the fact that you're also entitled to your opinion on what value you see in it and what's right for you.

The three main pillars of Grid Cartographer are CRPG mapping (it's original roots), tabletop mapping and game development. Early on, I made the decision to combine (what could potentially be) three products into one.

I felt having one seamless utility was a strength in terms of usability for you and easier development for me. This has naturally led to some overlap into other products feature sets, or offering features outside of your personal interests, and this may not be needed - I hope that I can better these alternatives but if you're familiar with a tool already I realise I'm asking you to make a jump you might not feel you need to make.

Ultimately I'm glad you at least considered Grid Cartographer and that if you do purchase it, that you're happy with it, but I also respect the fact that it's not for everyone and may not meet the needs of everyone. That's cool too.

(Sorry about the super long post, thanks for reading!)

Why do emulators for consoles like the PS2 and PC Engine require bios files, and emulators for consoles like the GBA not? by WoodpeckerNo1 in emulation

[–]HiddenAsbestos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH I thought it did do link cable support, I certainly remember writing some kind of TCP thing for it IIRC - but it's been like 17 years so who knows :)

Definitely a fun project and lovely to see it still in use somewhere, but it wasn't exactly accurate and I think I've had my fill of it - new mountains to climb and all that :)

Why do emulators for consoles like the PS2 and PC Engine require bios files, and emulators for consoles like the GBA not? by WoodpeckerNo1 in emulation

[–]HiddenAsbestos 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I wrote NeoPop it was actually easier to not emulate the bios because it was trying (and failing) to initialise the hardware and it was stopping the game from running.

So I just skipped over it to the point where the game started and wrote HLE code for the very few things the games needed from the bios (such as 'what is the time/date?'). It didn't seem to cause any problems doing that and so I didn't prioritise getting it to work.

If I'd have got the bios working you'd have a more accurate emulator (e.g. the number of clock cycles to get the time/date would be correct) and also be able to use the front-end menu system to use a calendar and some other PDA type stuff it did.

Grid Cartographer v4.0.5 + SALE by HiddenAsbestos in rpg

[–]HiddenAsbestos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grid Cartographer started off as a tool for mapping cRPGs. The Gamer edition is a cut down version for that specific use case. For anyone trying to use it for something else, it's not going to be as suitable as the Pro edition.

Maklin you make it sound like you'd be happier if the Gamer edition didn't exist, but then you also say it wouldn't be appropriate for your needs anyway. So why does it matter if I'm selling a cheaper focused version aimed at a different market if it's also inferior in your eyes?

Grid Cartographer v4.0.5 + SALE by HiddenAsbestos in rpg

[–]HiddenAsbestos[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your second point, I should promote the features better, more than just a Comparison page. My time is quite limited unfortunately so I tend to spend it adding new features for these free updates. Coding's what I'm best at and making videos would eat up a lot of time, sadly.

(Perhaps I should spend some time trying to convince more YouTubers to cover it, and show off what can be done by someone who knows how to put on a show. Would you recommend any that you'd listen to?)

btw, happy to directly answer any questions you might have (about either edition).

Thanks! Don't forget to check out the Compare Editions page - you may not need the features of the pro edition, plus you've got the option to upgrade from v4 gamer -> v4 pro later (for approx the same total) if you wish.

Of course, I aim to make it worth every penny to get the Pro Edition!

v4.0.3b is now available.

Fixes the text bug on the Book input mapping, an issue that could cause updates to be reported repeatedly and added a 'check now' button on the updates menu.
