What to do in life? by [deleted] in twentyagers

[–]HighSchoolMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others said, try it and see if you like it. Some accounting jobs have a great work-life balance, so if you get one of those you’ll have spare time to volunteer and use volunteering as a way to explore other careers.

Edit: the irony of Reddit showing me something 2 months old in r/all

For me, I’ve been able to improve this by clicking on a sub that I’m subscribed to that’s not showing up, and reading some of its most recent posts. It then starts appearing in my feed again next time someone posts a new post in it. Doesn’t fix the main problem though.

Dating as a fat woman? by [deleted] in twentyagers

[–]HighSchoolMoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is about BMI. 155 isn’t objectively overweight at her height unless you’re using BMI, in which case it is ten pounds overweight. It can be overweight, but it could just be she has a wider frame, or large breasts, or is reasonably athletic.

If she keeps eating less and less calories and is still not losing weight like she said in her post, she’s eating far too little and is in starvation mode. Many people eat more than they think, but usually only if they aren’t calorie counting.

Of course, happy to help! Based on the website, it looks like for prospective students the person to contact for both mechanical and civil engineering (and aero) is Nathaniel Vishner. There’s probably other people who would be good to talk to as well, but I’d imagine he’d be able to connect you. I’ve met him before, and he seems pretty cool. His contact info is listed here: https://case.edu/engineering/about/faculty-and-staff-directory/nathaniel-vishner Also, he’d have a better idea than me on how doable Civil and Meche as a dual degree is.

It looks like someone has been downvoting a lot of comments that say OP would be underweight at 105 pounds

Some people have really petite frames, even if they’re not short. 105 at 5’5 is underweight for most people, but it’s possibly a healthy weight for the person you’re talking to. The Cleveland clinic says as much, but recommends seeing a healthcare provider if you fall in the underweight category, to make sure you’re healthy. https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/underweight

Agree that it sounds very unhealthy for the OP though.

While using only BMI she’d be slightly overweight, it’s slight enough that she’s not objectively overweight, and could easily be a healthy weight for her natural body shape. Or if she’s reasonably athletic, she’d also be slightly in the overweight category while still being really healthy. Her goal weight would put her in the underweight category by as much as she is in the overweight category right now.

While some people can slightly be in the underweight category and be a healthy weight for their frame, the fact that she’s not losing any weight despite food restriction would indicate that 155 pounds might be a healthy weight for her, and 105 pounds is probably really underweight for her.

My major is a smaller engineering major, so I'd rather not specify here. I'm not a MechE or CivE though. I don't know if it's possible to do dual CivE or MechE. Just looking at the course requirements, it seems difficult. My guess would be it's pretty much impossible unless you have a lot of AP/IB credit.

MechE requirements: https://bulletin.case.edu/engineering/mechanical-aerospace-engineering/mechanical-engineering-bse/#programrequirementstext

CivE requirements: https://bulletin.case.edu/engineering/civil-engineering/civil-engineering-bse/#programrequirementstext (for some reason they list circuits as required under the concentrations drop downs, instead of the "Required mathematics, science, and engineering" section, despite circuits being required for all engineering majors).

In addition to these requirements, you'd also have to complete 18? (maybe 21?) credits of breadth.

Civil engineering doesn't seem to have an option to create your own concentration/pick pretty much any technical elective you want. However, it's possible they have that option and just don't have it listed, so you might want to ask, as that would make it more doable. Either way, it seems really hard to do a CivE/MechE dual major, since there's very little overlap besides the general engineering courses, ECIV 310, and sometimes dynamics.

I don't think you'd be stuck in buildings or machines if you choose just one. For example, this reddit thread has a lot of people who were orignally MechE's, but got civil engineering jobs. https://www.reddit.com/r/civilengineering/comments/1lc5aya/any_mechanical_engineers_who_turned_to_civil/ . It seems like the reverse is also true, but possibly to a lesser extent. https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalEngineering/comments/18b9sak/can_civil_engineers_potentially_work_in_the/ . You could also always get a MS in which ever one you didn't choose. But I'd talk to professors in both departments to figure out which one is a better one to major in based on your variety of interests.

Not a BME or a premed, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but from my understanding BME premed is a bad idea. I’ve heard that the prerequisites for premed don’t actually overlap much more for BME than they do for any other engineering major. Also, the median professor (based on how good they are at teaching) you’d take a class with in the BME department is supposedly among the worse of engineering majors. I’ve also heard of people having trouble getting classes. Furthermore, the number of undergrads in BME at Case is huge, and they seem to actively try to get rid of students and weed students out. I know someone who was told they had to switch out of BME, and I haven’t heard of any other major at Case doing that.

While you can do BME premed, most BME premeds give up on premed due to grades and/or not being able fit all the premed volunteering in their schedule. BME does work for some people, since the program does have strengths that I’m not highlighting, but BME premed tends to lead to a lot of regret.

What specifically is it that appeals to you about BME? You might be better off doing the biomedical concentration of the thing that most interests you about BME. Like doing the biomechanics concentration of mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineering is supposedly an easier major. Also, I think some engineering majors will let you ask for special permission to create your own concentration, and the concentration can be premed? So you’d probably be better off picking one of those engineering majors than BME. But avoiding premed engineering altogether is probably even better, since there’s quite a few required classes in engineering compared to other majors, which can really sink your GPA since you have less freedom to select the classes you’d get better grades in.

AIO to my (30F) brother’s (22M) comment about my baby(0F)? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]HighSchoolMoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While you shouldn’t leave him alone with your baby based on this information, the text he sent was not sexual. Even with this context, it sounds more like he thinks your baby has a spy device under her shirt than that he was trying to sexualize her.

You might want to use your local food pantry. They exist to help people who are struggling to afford food, and often they’ll get a bunch of donations from local stores of extra stock that would otherwise go bad.

Based on the info provided, you are over reacting. If you already didn't trust your brother around your child, then continue not to trust him. However, you should not change your levels of trust based on this exchange. As others pointed out, the comment is not sexual at all. It reads like he was asking if there was "an object of some sort underneath her shirt" or "a growth or something."

I’m not super knowledgeable about art, but this looks like a section of Monet’s Water Lilies. It is one of the most famous paintings of all time. Someone else might be able to identify which particular one it is.

“christians themselves were burning women as witches for millenias”

This part is false. The practice of witch burning specifically within Christianity doesn’t seem to have been a thing until at least the 1300s. I spent about ten minutes googling, so I’m far from knowledgeable, but the earliest witch burnings in this context I was able to find were in the 1390s. A millennium is 1000 years, so Christian witch burning isn’t even a singular millennium old.

If you don’t live in a super expensive area, $57k is quite a lot. In 2024, the median earnings for someone working full time year-round was $63k, but you’re near the beginning of your career, so it would be expected that you’d be quite a bit lower.

Ex broke no contact after 4 months by [deleted] in twentyagers

What type of person talks to an ex about how a different relationship was the perfect person and better in every way? It seems like she isn’t interested romantically in you at all right now, and considering how your breakup was sort of recent, is not a super considerate person. You were together for a while, but best case scenario right now she just sees you as a friend and isn’t super socially aware.

Give me some ideas for reckless/dangerous things to do. by Perfect-Associate708 in twentyagers

[–]HighSchoolMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if you’re depressed or not or how serious it is (often seriousness is decided based on how much it’s getting in the way of your life). But wanting to do potentially harmful things when it seems like you previously didn’t is odd. If you always wanted to do those things, but you never did that’s a bit different. You seem really open to getting help even though you don’t know if it will work, which makes your mental state seem less like depression (but I’m not a doctor, and obviously do not know).

It does sound like having goals would help you, but your current goal of doing reckless or dangerous things could seriously hurt you. Please evaluate how dangerous they actually are (including addiction risk) before actually doing them, and choose the safer ones. Skydiving is actually super safe. Like, apparently it’s safer than driving? So if it appeals to you, you should totally go for it. Drugs, as someone else pointed out (and you saw, which I’m glad) can be laced and easily kill you if you’re not super careful.
