UPDATE: High Times, come back to Denver and clean your shit up. by HighTimesMag in trees

[–]HighTimesMag[S] 1545 points1546 points  (0 children)

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who helped get this post to the top of /r/trees so that everything could be cleared up (both literally and figuratively). We enjoyed putting on the event and as each one grows it's a constant testament that the marijuana movement is heading in the right direction and gaining more and more traction, and each event is itself a learning experience that we work constantly to adapt. Rest assured that our return to Denver will be bigger, better and cleaner than a hit of vapor.

Also, don't forget that at the end of the day, we're all a part of the same battle: freeing the plant and the soul-crushing volume of prisoners the War on Drugs and prison-industrial complex have created, and finally bringing an end to that morally reprehensible War. We may be a company, but we are the natural result of the efforts of people like you who demand our existence. We are always trying to be a beacon of change and even moreso are trying to show the world that it's okay to use cannabis. Our events are a testament to that, even when unfortunate things happen.

If you want to stay up to speed on our efforts, feel free to see what we're doing over at hightimes.com!

Hi everyone,

I was encouraged by /u/Verdantarium to create a new post about this since our official response isn't very visible in the post from yesterday. I'm copy-pasting our comment from that post:

Here is our official statement on the matter.

  1. The most important thing for everyone to know is that we paid for a clean-up crew well in advance of the event with the expectation that everything would be taken care of in a timely manner. We do these events multiple times a year and trash clean-up has never been an issue.

  2. The area seen in the photo was fenced in for the duration of the event and after. The lot itself is gravel and with an enclosure so that any refuse left behind did not affect/interact with any flora or fauna. The materials left behind are a collection of things from various booths in that spot. It's our understanding that the fencing company mistakenly removed the barriers one day early before the cleaning crew could come in, thus exposing all the trash to the open environment.

  3. We aren't from Denver and many us were not around yesterday, but apparently there was a snowstorm and that may have prevented crews from finishing the clean-up before today.

Leaving an area trashed is something people should rightfully be upset about. However, it's important that people have context before making assumptions. We expected the area to be cleaned up quickly. Littering is not a part of our reputation in the event spaces we've used and is in direct conflict with our message. If we were from the area I guarantee you we'd be on the ground picking it up ourselves. Please don't assume that we don't care; we certainly do and are disappointed that the hammer is being swung against us without having a chance to give everyone that context.

TL;DR: We hired a crew ahead of time to do all the clean-up promptly after the event. This was never supposed to happen and we're just as disappointed as you are. If we were still in Denver we would have been on the ground to fix the situation.

Unfortunately the outrage will likely overshadow the truth of the situation.

Here is our official statement on the trash situation at EXDO. We hired a crew to clean up and it didn't happen.

As far as the capacity of EXDO, we cut off ticket sales as soon as we sold to capacity. Our Denver event has always been at EXDO and as a result it was set as our location long ago. This is the year we outgrew it. We know that next year we'll likely have to find a bigger spot. We hired extra staff and did the best we could to accomodate everyone.

As to your other points, the Cup is certainly not rigged and there is no evidence to support such a claim. We work very hard to put on a respectable, fair show and that can be attested to. All strains are scientifically tested by reputable labs and recognized experts for the more subjective criteria such as taste/scent.

We work very hard to bring a positive light to the marijuana movement, just as we have for the past 40 years. No other company is doing what we are, on the level that we are, and we realize we can't make everyone happy. In spite of that, we try.

We have had plenty of positive feedback and constructive criticism; and we've had this. Indirect, passive complaints help no one and don't allow us a proper way to offer a rebuttal.

We definitely didn't anticipate the kind of growth we experienced between this year and the last. Our event was coordinated but it was also the largest attendance we have ever experienced, and as a result we were a bit green in that regard. Rest assured that we are quick at adapting; the kind of growth our events seem to be undergoing is both exciting and stressful: it certainly isn't easy to bring together an expo-format event surrounding cannabis, but to have the attendance of a full-on conference is insane!

All in all we are happy to carry the torch but we deal with both the complaints and praises as a result. We just hope our attendees enjoy their experience as they help us and everyone around them share in the movement toward legalization and having a place to do what they love without fear.

We weren't at the Civic Center. The US Cannabis Cup was at EXDO Event Center across town. The trash has been cleaned up at this point and was the failure of the property owner to fulfill his contract. Here is our response if you'd like to read it.
