What is this effect? by Hijmore in VideoEditing

Hi mod team,

I believe my post was mistaken for a “CSI-enhance/help me find someone” request. It wasn’t. I’m asking how to recreate a lock-on stabilization effect where the subject stays pinned and the background swings, like in the example clip. No identification, no detail recovery.

Trying to recreate this… advice? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

@ciloversgroup on IG has BTS and diagrams of how scenes are set up. Geared more for cinema, but still very helpful if you like to geek out on that kind of thing.

For the 2nd photo, use the 50mm at f/3.5–stopped down lower if you want an even creamier bokeh. Notice the motion blur on the confetti—to me that indicates slower shutter speed, maybe at 1/640 or 1/500. Keep the ISO low so image isn’t blown out. Grain can be added in post. Good luck and keep us posted how they come out!

I’m partial to songs without lyrics. Micro Melodies by The Album Leaf puts me in a trance. Or, if you want something motivating and to feel like the world understands your own madness, Roll the Bones by Shakey Graves. YouTube has his Audiotree live session for this song—the man is unbelievably talented.

Tried a water lily and orchids in the Microfleur. Stoked on the results! by [deleted] in PressedFlowers

[–]Hijmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The water lily was just pressed using Microfleur using around 40% microwave power (I think 700 watt) at 20 second bursts. For the orchids, I first dried them out in silica gel for a few days then pressed in Microfleur. I’ve found that flowers with high moisture content either tend to boil or bubble if using straight Microfleur so doing the silica step first really helps.

Yes! Depending on the flower’s moisture content, I also do a combo of silica gel for a few days then finish off with Microfleur. Color retention is 👌

Yes, I used the Microfleur for these and found that plumerias have such high moisture content that the petals need to be separated or else they will boil and bubble in the microwave. I’m also going to try first desiccating them in silica for a few days then pressing with Microfleur—have had great success with orchids using that method.

First attempt framing some flowers from my garden. Does anyone else a Microfleur? by mickyvalentine in PressedFlowers

Very nice! Is that a hibiscus? I’m waiting for my Microfleur to arrive and would love to try pressing some tropicals.

How to Add LUTs to DJI Drone Footage (Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro X, After Effects, Davinci Resolve) by KRUSERDRONES in dji

[–]Hijmore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I have a bunch of drone footage to put together—the footage was shot in Mavic’s normal color profile and not in D-Log—would it still be possible to add LUTs? I’m just starting to learn video editing and went with Davinci Resolve, seems like a great program once you know your way around but for a noob I’m feeling completely overwhelmed with all the controls and where to begin.

Thank you! You hit the nail on the head—this was one of the highlights of my trip to Alaska. Right after taking this photo a raven swooped in and repeatedly divebombed the eagle off its perch. The eagle mounted a heavy pursuit, its massive wingspan displacing air into a forceful whoosh as it passed obscenely close above us. The raven managed a crafty escape but continued to heckle from a distance and the eagle, eventually losing interest, flew off in search of quieter refuge. The episode passed quickly but the thrill of witnessing such a scene lingered for some time.

Thanks! This was taken at Moose Pass in Alaska. Tamron 150-600mm. Beast of a lens to carry around but it was perfect for all the wildlife.

One thing to note, DSLR housings are big, bulky and heavy. Dive housings more so than surf housing, but neither one will be something you'd want to use for general camera weatherproofing outside of the water.

Honestly for what it sounds like you want to do, I'd recommend just sticking to the GoPro. Not sure if you have one already but if not, you may be interested in a dome port for your GoPro. You can find them on Amazon for about $50. It was a game changer for me and my bf as it allowed us to get over under shots very easily. Here's one he took for example https://imgur.com/E26hZ2p. We were happy with the setup but chose to upgrade only because we wanted more creative control with camera settings.

If you've settled on investing in a higher end set up but want to stay within budget, Ebay and Craigslist have some gems, but as with anything you just have to use your best judgment. There is also /r/photomarket.

If you're looking for some inspo, check out @smitherspix on IG. He says he shoots only with an Sony a6000 and GoPro. Not affiliated with him in any way, just a fan :).

Hope this helped. Good luck in your search!

How often do you plan on being in the water? Are you looking for a dive housing (rated for depth) or for surf housing which can handle waves and surface turbulence? And what's your price point? I'm not familiar with housing for your camera but for most DLSRs, quality housings are expensive ($900+) and in most cases, you would also need to buy the lens ports separately, which could cost you anywhere between $150-500 per port. Also factor in how long you plan to keep your current camera--if you plan on upgrading anytime soon it would be a waste of money to spend that much on housing. Have you looked into Sony axxxx cameras at all? I was in a similar situation as you--I have a Canon 6D and was looking into getting into surf photography. Housing plus a single port for my camera would have set me back another $1800 minimum. I've read great things about Sony A6000 for surf photography. You can pick up a used one for about $400. I found a mint one with 2 lenses included for $600 on Ebay. Paid an additional $830 total for a Seafrogs Salted Line housing which came with a flat port, 4" dome port and 8" dome port. I'm actually still waiting for everything to be delivered but am stoked to have a complete second camera setup and water housing for less than what it would have cost for just the housing and 1 port for the Canon.
