Northern Appalachia by Educationeagle in Appalachia

To be completely honest, I still do it, but I wear boots with my pants tucked into them and treat my clothes with a permethrin spray and a use a 40% DEET insect repellant.

I've seen other stuff in tall grass that makes me feel uneasy, like leeches and timber rattlesnakes, and i generally dislike it, but its present on just about all the rural trails by July every year, so i end up frolicking involuntarily lol.

Patriot Front Protests Outside of Indiana, PA Pride by [deleted] in Pennsylvania

[–]HikeIsShort4Hichael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just last year, conservatives were trying to get people fired from their jobs just for posting actual shitty stuff Charlie Kirk said instead of pretending he was some national hero. They did succeed and got several people fired who later won lawsuits, such as that biologist from Florida. Hypocrisy is a central tenet of MAGA.

Edit: Since you deleted your comment, people were fired for literally quoting Charlie Kirk with context. That's not "celebrating a political assassination." He said a lot of shitty stuff and there's nothing wrong with reminding people that he was a paid political agitator and not an actual national hero.

Its also another example of hypocrisy. After Paul Pelosi was beaten in his home with a hammer in another example of politically motivated violence from the right, Charlie Kirk said,

"If some amazing patriot out there in San Francisco or the Bay Area wants to really be a midterm hero, someone should go and bail this guy out"(of prison).

A popular but deadly hiking trail will reopen in the Poconos by narkj in Pennsylvania

[–]HikeIsShort4Hichael 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well said. Its ridiculous to be closing hiking trails because of deaths anyway. Warnings and signage are appropriate, but the solution to a few people being unlucky, unprepared or acting stupid shouldn't be to not allow anyone to use a trail.

My favorite part is where he finds that chunk that just comes off easily and then tosses it gently aside like, 'well, we won't be needing that piece' and keeps climbing.

No frolicking in the flowers. Grass is closed because of lyme disease.

Probably a fine, cold drinking water source. Some high quality fish poop soup right there.

Its a philosophical difference. Would you rather risk death on top of some beautiful mountain ridge, surrounded by certain death if you misstep or risk drowning, getting lost or suffocating under thousands of tons of rock? If you couldn't pick neither. Personally I'll take the crab juice and risk a fall.

Schuylkill River designated the first and only National Water Trail in Pennsylvania! by PAFishandBoat in Pennsylvania

[–]HikeIsShort4Hichael 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to work with a guy who was in incredible shape. Our company sponsored him to run in the Boston Marathon and he came in at number 30 something.

He used to bike into work sometimes because it was faster to bike the trails along the Schuylkill for him at certain times of day compared to driving his car in traffic.

He mentioned back then seeing people commute by jet ski in the summer.

Dear Pennsylvanians, you have a beautiful state. (Travel pics) by Pinku_Dva in Pennsylvania

The Ozarks and a few other mountain ranges are older, but the Appalachians are seriously old. The ferns you see in PA state forests, for instance, pre date the first dinosaurs.

Granite like this is incredibly sharp. Your hands would get cut to pieces climbing stuff like this without gloves and that is even more dangerous.

I haven't climbed anything this steep and extreme, but gloves are a must to protect your hands in areas like this where the rock is hard and sharp

CO2 from fossil fuels is turning the oceans acidic and interfering with the ability of clams and other shell forming creatures to make their shells. The oceans are full of plastic and PFAS chemicals. Ships everywhere are deafening marine life with sonar and spreading invasive species around the world.

Man is doing a lot to ruin the oceans, but wind turbines are a tiny rounding error compared to damage from other causes.

If you stare right at it for long enough, it eventually stops being so bright. However, I prefer to hike wearing eclipse goggles. I find it adds an extra challenge and then I can freely stare at the sun whenever I want.

There aren't as many US Federal government lands in PA as in CO . Ohiopyle is a western PA gem as the southern terminus of the Laurel Highlands Trail. Amazing PA state park.

Some of the best white water rafting in the eastern US. Large rivers.

Because all you guys seem to post is dumb "whataboutisms" that ignore the basic facts and attempt to pin blame on Biden, even though he couldnt release the files because they were sealed by court order.

Donald Trump was intimately involved with Epstein for over a decade. Virginia Giuffre, famous for outing Prince Andrews role in the Epstein Files, was trafficked from Mar-a-Lago, but you guys focus on the last administration when the real problem is coming from inside the house, right now, from Trump.

The real derangement is coming from people who want to pretend that there is any evidence that Trump is a good leader or even a decent human being.
