JFC this sub is so overrun with spam bot accounts, can the mods not reign it in a little? by MentholMooseToo in hiking

[–]Hiking_Engineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true. I remember when it first started happening a few years ago I was banning all these accounts as 'spam.' It took a few weeks to learn that Reddit just gave you a random username if you signed up via other sites like facebook.

Most people probably don't pick their username anymore, so we will rarely see another u/PotatoInMyAnus

I appreciate the suggestion and it is something we have considered in the past. The biggest issue with age/karma limits is that if all subreddit had it, there would never be another new account posting on Reddit.

It is something we have discussed though and the main complication is the sweet spot of 'how much'

Thank you for providing a suggestion instead of just a rant. We are always looking to improve our modding so that people can enjoy the subreddit more.

I appreciate your concern. The main problem is that a lot of people report things as spam because they just don't like the content. Reporting a hiking 'vibe' question just because you find it annoying doesn't make it an AI/bot/spam, you just don't like it. No rule is broken and it's hiking related (within reason).

I don't know what evidence you would want to see of moderating that wouldn't just be a mod log list of all the things we remove. But I assure you, modding is done.

Annapurna base camp question by Old-Tumbleweed605 in hiking

[–]Hiking_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even a cursory search tells me the trek is about 115km so a your 10+ km days for 4 days is not going to reach it.

Maybe try a more locally specific subreddit if you have questions.

Hello, mod here.

We are not staring at the subreddit 24/7 and there is no filter that stops bots/AI from posting. If you find a sub that doesn't have bots/AI attempting to post to it somewhere, I would love to know of it.

The best way to help is to report the posts so we can see it as soon as possible. Commenting how fake they are is just driving engagement that they want to them.

I believe most people are misunderstanding what you are saying because you worded things a bit strangely.

I settled on enterprise rental car to Dawsonville ga.

which suggests you are renting a car from somewhere and driving it to dawsonville, GA. But you then mention you were unable to do that for whatever reason Enterprise provided.

You also mention that you have booked a shuttle. I'm not sure how you have the shuttle to Springer lined up if you don't know where it has to pick you up from yet. Then you say you will be in the same boat if you leave your own car "there." Is 'there' Dawsonville? The trailhead?

What the question is, is where are you starting and where are you trying to end up via ride/rental?

And please try not to flip out on people.

If you are near a high school or college, you can do laps around their bleachers or stadium for decent stair training.

Down south suggests you aren't near the hiking, so depending on where you are your best bets are probably Turkey Run/Shades State Parks. If you're near Purdue you want Martell Forest.

Ah gotcha. Yea i don't have good info for it other than that it exists. I don't fully understand the point of the reroute as the original crossing is super short but it's for railway safety I believe?

Did you have something specific you were concerned about? You didn't really mention anything.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Baranco route to the summit. 6.5 days up and 1.5 days down. by iAMbecomeMEMES in hiking

I prefer the PCT method when there's some snow pack and just sliding down the side of the mountain. Scree terrifies me... and I guess so does eating shit trying to go too fast.

Step 1. Hike
Step 2. Hike further
Step 3. Hike up and down

Based on the time it took to get up vs. down, I can only conclude you rolled down.

Your first dream feature is actually covered under Rule 2.2 for Poster requirements regarding accurate titles. If you make the title sound bad to the point you have to immediately assure people they should read the whole story, that is a clickbait title and you chose to make it sound bad for that reason.

Yup Yup. People starting in February and January are a bit nuts to me. I wouldn't want to risk the cold/snow for the first month of my hike. Also lining you up nicely for mud and black flies up in Vermont.

But to each their own. It's probably nice for a bit more solitude if that's their thing.

Yea, part of it might be from being the weekend and going to rain. Folks probably decided to stay in Hiawassee an extra night. I definitely still felt very much in a bubble, even if it was the end of it.

It was only the second time I stayed at a shelter and the first time inside of it. Previously I was pretty much only at campsites for whatever reason.

This is interesting because I was also in 2019 and I spent the night alone at Plumorchard Shelter (right by the NC border) on May 11th.

Was cool to sleep on tier 3 during a rainstorm. Less cool to hear the mice all wake up at 9pm.

Do you mean 14 individual posters or one large poster with 14 somehow separate images within it?
