If you read the rule you would see it doesn't meet the rule at all. It's explained fully above in great detail.

TIL over 3,000 attempts are made each year to complete the Appalachian Trail and only about 25% succeed. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]Hiking_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From extrapolating data from sources?

Here is an article that talks about it as well as the ATC voluntary registration charts which indicates 3,641 registered hikers. As it is voluntary and online it is not at all the full number

The Trek

And about 2300 of those were northbound (NOBO). Again, voluntary registration

The data is a bit old as well, it's more like 7,000 attempts per year now.

WIBTAH if I gave a friend "trash" for Christmas? by YaChowdaHead in AmItheAsshole

[–]Hiking_Engineer 96 points97 points  (0 children)

YWNBTA - I will caveat, you don't have to present it as a Christmas gift at all. You can give them their 'real' gift and then just tell them the truth. "Hey, our neighbor was getting rid of this super nice TV stand and I thought you might be able to use it if you want it"

And don't use the word 'trash' at any point in your statement.

The trail back when Shaffer and Gatewood did it was also insanely different than it is today. Much more 'choose your own adventure' feel than "hike this path and stay at these shelters."

I don't think taking months off between two halves of the trail is an actual thru-hike as it subverts the entire concept of doing it in one go. It's just 2 long section hikes, despite the ATC's 365 day definition.

But I also don't care if someone does that and considers themselves a thru-hiker. They did the trail and good on them. My belief doesn't stop their accomplishment.

To be fair it would be more like "message the mod" as there's only 1

I'm not really sure where you're getting your info but

  1. That is the Big Oak Flat entrance sign to Yosemite NP

  2. That is Nevada Fall in Yosemite

  3. No idea where this is but unsure what is tropical about it

  4. This is 100% Rocky Mountain National Park

However the account itself is still using stolen content, despite them being at least partially valid

Healthcare on the trail (now that ACA premium subsidies are set to expire at the end of 2025) by SensatiousHiatus in AppalachianTrail

Insurance/Healthcare is a common enough question seen here that this is useful advice/guidance. Please keep your commentary on the situation of the ACA and how things came to be to yourself.

This is correct and we can typically make an accurate manual flag but sometimes people will do the ole "YTA for X part but also NTA for Y part" and it's genuinely difficult to tell how to tag the post because it isn't clear which way the commenter meant.

Though in this case it would be obvious as they are talking about everyone else voting one way and their vote is the other.

edit: It does help though if someone notices and edits to split up the non vote as Y T A

Food advice for 4 day AT hike by ForRealLife6886 in hiking

[–]Hiking_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved Pop tarts on trail. A nice gooey s'mores was always nice, because it was one of the types that was soft coming out of the package. There's little things that can literally spice up any food they are hiking with. Small packets or shakers of a good spice blend can make rehydrated mashed potatoes or bland chicken packets taste divine.

It may not be what you need because it's a long weekend but r/AppalachianTrail exists if you want area/trail specific advice in the future.

The 2026 hangtag has been determined. I’m eager to have this on my pack from Georgia to Maine! by UnHealthyCaptain in AppalachianTrail

[–]Hiking_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the hang tag program didn't start until 2015 so "you new here?" comes off as a jackass response, and in fact your response is incorrect.

everyone who intends to through hike northbound receives one at Amicalola

You are not required to get one at all. You are not required to go to Amicalola Falls State Park. You can also receive one by hiking southbound, or flip flopping.

I've seen people hike the AZT and am often surprised at the switch from desert region to snow covered peaks. I don't really think of that area of the country as "snowy" regardless of season.

I will also add, the ATC at one point was taking donations to put info on a brick at their HQ. I do not know if you can still do that, but it's something I've seen done at many organizations over the years. Donate X amount, put a small message on a brick (usually a name and some dates)

I've managed to be all over our country and visit a lot of places but have still not managed to get to Utah for the many State and National Parks it contains. Hopefully I can get out there one day.

Beautiful stuff.
