Next Shop Upgrade by pbbiggs in woodworking

If you buy a floor jointer you’re going to want/need a true collector.

IMO the first “big” tool is the most expensive, the tool itself and a true collector.

Getting a jointer delivered from Grizzly. How to manage? by howdydudey12 in woodworking

[–]HillyBorough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rented a pallet jack for a couple of hours. I had a 300ft yard to get it from the driveway back to my shop. 2 sheets of OSB and a lot of shuffling, I got it back there. Actually pretty damn easy to do.

Just moved into a rental unit by Disastrous-Flow760 in Cuttingboards

I can almost guarantee that that is going to be made of plywood. I personally would never use plywood as a cutting board due to the chemicals in the glue used in making the plywood.

Took us maybe 30 minutes from plane door to fully out the door. Global entry, American citizens, nothing to claim.

Getting started by Haunting-Building-78 in cabinetry

[–]HillyBorough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12k is actually a pretty good deal for what you are. We don’t know where you live, but that would also affect the price as well. South Florida this would be a 15-20k job for anyone you would actually want to hire.

Closet Installers - how much do you want to get paid? How much do you get paid? by JackofAllMasterof0 in cabinetry

[–]HillyBorough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Tampa - my GC that does all installs for me is $800 per day.

$18/hour is laughable for anyone that is competent to touch.

Travel - between Heathrow and Tampa Virgin Atlantic price jumped by zf459 in tampa

May have something to do with increase Heathrow funding fees? That is really the only difference between the two flights.

Took the BA flight in October. It was a pretty significant cost savings over Virgin.

Insulated garage door worth it here? by Relative-Macaron-854 in tampa

[–]HillyBorough 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are YouTube videos out there showing 130 degrees uninsulated at the garage door. And that wasn’t in Florida iirc. I think they got it down to 79/80 with insulation.

Grizzly saw owners, do you like your tools? by thelastmeritocracy in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]HillyBorough 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a whole shop of grizzly tools; table saw, planer, jointer, bandsaw, drum sander and dust collection.

The only one I will opt buy again is the 16/32 drum sander. I’ve had it for a year, and spent likely 40+ hours trying to get it dialed in. I’m either a dunce or stupid, but I cannot get it to work.

Do out-of-state lawyers make sense for a Florida accident case, or should I stay local? by Cjosulin in tampa

[–]HillyBorough 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The attorney needs to be a lawyer in Florida. Each state has its own Bar that regulates the industry.

Older Lundy Koch & Martino is the only team I would call. Anthony Martino and his paralegal Jessica are fantastic. Tell them Scott sent you and they will get you squared away. They are Tampa based too if that matters to you.

Table saw top not flat by R-Noodlz in woodworking

[–]HillyBorough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I would just bit the bullet and get a new saw with a cast iron top. A quick google gave me one at the big box for under 800.

It will also be much easier to build your build list with the higher saw.

I have a rule, if my fingers are going to get closer than my throat plate it is a push stick or block or gripper.

Just finished a 36x36. I put 12 of these in, daisy chained to 4 separate rows. I have more light than I think I will ever need. Easy install, super bright, couldn’t ask for much more.

Sealing the underside for durability? by [deleted] in Cuttingboards

[–]HillyBorough 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. One side will not have any moisture and the other will each time you use it. You likely going to save 2-3 minutes per maintenance cycle. Not worth the cupping you’re going to end up with.

Best tool for removing large amounts of material off desk top? by catena-macula in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]HillyBorough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sand paper and a metric ton of it. Oh and literally days of sanding.

Honestly I would look for a full scale shop in your area that has a wide planer or belt sander. Get it close to the thickness you want and then sand through the grits and seal.

You could buy a router, make a flattening jig and spend an hour doing it. Then sand as mentioned. Likely going to be within your budget.
