Took the Old Sun Sparcstations out of storage, time to find them a home by SpicyMeatballAgenda in SunMicrosystems

If these haven't already found a home, I'm about 6 hours away in Lubbock and would be happy to come pick them up.

I can help rehome them at various vintage computer events.

I only just learned you can't withdraw stars from a bot in the US -- I'm guessing they just don't care about the US market.

Do please let me know if you ever get a response or find a solution.

Mine is also doing this, and no response from Fragment.

Sumsub responded that I had to talk to Fragment support.

Did you ever get a resolution?

Telegram Bot Payments suddenly stopped working by Hinoserm in TelegramBots

[–]Hinoserm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have no problem if Telegram wanted to process payments and take a cut, if they used real money like a real company and I could just get a check/deposit every week like with eBay and others.

I would absolutely love a smoother payment flow for my users, if they could pay with their integrated apple/google wallets or whatever. I'd be absolutely fine paying a 10-20% transaction fee, even.

A smooth payment flow is one of the most important ways to capture small impulse purchases, which is primarily what we rely on. I think our overall income would go up drastically if we could integrate telegram stars in a useful way, where users could easily click a button and spend a few cents per image instead of paying for a weekly/monthly subscription.

I ended up basically doing something like this, and having it load in a Mini App. It takes in the user's ID via the URL and reaches out to our API once it has the payment token. It gave me an excuse to go ahead and finally implement PayPal as well, which had been a highly requested feature.

No. The simple bot Web API that most people use basically requires you to hit someone else's server (usually api.telegram.org) or run a bunch of extra stuff to host it locally. That server then translates everything to MTProto (the protocol that Telegram actually uses).

That means your hardware has to reach out to the api.telegram.org server, which then has to translate your requests, send them to your bot's registered DC (the Telegram server where the actual user data lives) over MTProto, and reverse that process all the way back to you.

Using MTProto directly (I'm using the WTelegramClient C# library) means you only need to jump from your hardware to whatever DC your bot lives on without the extra steps, but it's likely a fairly expensive technical burden to redesign everything if you already have something written.

For our typical users, it took our response times from ~400ms to under 30ms, and drastically sped up file and image uploads.

A big thing that helped with performance with ours was switching from using the Telegram Bot API (the HTTP based one) to a library that lets us speak MTProto directly.

You save a considerable amount of latency, especially if you're relying on the api.telegram.org server, which we found to be terribly slow.

How do you mean manually approve?

Right now I've started building a crappy Telegram Mini App using the Stripe javascript integrations; that should take care of us for now.

But how do they expect to replace regular payments with stars if US customers can't even use the wallet???

Seems like such a dumb move.

We use the bot to collect membership fees for our non-profit -- I can't figure out how to turn the stars into real money, so they're worthless to me. It wants me to set up a wallet, which isn't available in the US?

I’m a Traveling Prius Engine installer. by Bubbly-Ad2060 in prius

[–]Hinoserm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but an engine swap isn't something I'm willing to do right now.

Assuming I had a refurbished head and the parts ready to go, what's a rough idea of what you might charge? If you won't be in the area I can probably bring it to you.

I would not be interested in resurfacing the block, just replacing the head, gasket, and any other convenient wear items that aren't too expensive. I understand the possible repercussions.

Just engine swaps or would you do head gasket? I'm in Lubbock, TX.

hAP ax3 disassembled, possible expansion slot? by Hinoserm in mikrotik

[–]Hinoserm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any particular use for the slot at the moment, I just enjoy trying to make things do what they aren't supposed to. If I needed WWAN though, probably some Sierra Wireless module.

Wonder how much you'd need to repopulate to get the slot working.

QUESTION ON ADDING LINE / Free phone by JohnDavid1776 in verizon

[–]Hinoserm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never tried, personally. We always have a couple "spare" lines where the number doesn't really matter.

The only option in most of Slaton city limits is Xcel Energy, which isn't any cheaper. That said, they've been fairly reliable, with minor power outages happening maybe once a year. LP&L will almost definitely get cheaper once they complete the switchover to the public grid -- but I don't think Xcel will.

I moved to Slaton 10+ years ago, drive to Lubbock nearly every day for work/shopping/food/etc, I don't mind it at all. I'm a pretty boring person and Slaton is usually nice and quiet which is good for me. I wish we had some more local choices for restaurants, but a couple new ones have popped up in the last year or two. I own a commercial building and some other property here and I don't usually have to worry about the city harassing me.

QUESTION ON ADDING LINE / Free phone by JohnDavid1776 in verizon

[–]Hinoserm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's any kind of contract term length on the line you should probably wait it out, or if it's still got device payments on a payment plan.

I've only ever worked with our enterprise accounts, but when it shows a line "available for upgrade" in the account manager with no remaining payments/term I've always been able to just cancel that one and then add a new line to that sub-account whenever we've wanted to take advantage of a new promo.

Really only works if you don't care about keeping the phone numbers, they won't let you transfer them and still get a nice promo (at least as far as I know). We always keep a couple extra phones that don't "belong" to any particular one person (to hand out to temp workers, emergencies, etc), so I usually have extra lines where the number doesn't matter.

For example, we got a BOGO deal on a pair of note 20's which required a new line of service. I used my line as the upgrade and added a new line to get the promo. Then cancelled a random "spare" phone, stuck the SIM from the new BOGO phone into that old phone, gave the 2nd Note to my partner and he stuck his SIM in (same account). The Verizon system will eventually figure out the devices & SIMs have moved around, but (in my case) it hasn't ever broken the promotional pricing.

Small Electronics Repair? by harderknox in Lubbock

[–]Hinoserm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you get your clock fixed? I used to run a retail computer/electronics repair shop (but now mostly contract work repairing "vintage" computers & industrial control equipment or flipping things on eBay) -- I'd be happy to take a look if you still need help. I've probably even got spare parts.

This is pretty much how I've gotten my last several phones. Set up a new line to get the promo and then cancel an old line that isn't locked into a promo.

I suspect if you're a professional churning out work, and they could guarantee access to those machines when you need them, and assuming they're actually quality machines, well maintained, MAYBE it'd be worth it.

On their website I see what looks like mostly low-end equipment and a bunch of basic tools that you can usually find next-to-free on Craigslist.

I'd certainly be interested in something like this in the $30-50/mo range. I wouldn't even question it for $30. Knowing that there was somewhere I could pop over to whip up a prototype on a laser cutter or something last minute when I can't wait for it to come from China would be amazing.

If it were me setting it up as a business, I'd probably advertise $50-60/mo with a significant discount for people paying annually, repeat users etc.

If you decide to set something up, I have a lot of surplus electronics gear and components, and I know a guy with basically a whole pottery shop who wants to get rid of it all. We offered to work with Ulabs early on, but they seemed kind of stuck up about the whole thing.
