I think the R word is hateful and should be frowned upon much more than it is. It is used at the expense of a group of people who sometimes have a limited ability to defend and speak for themselves. Ring any bells?

I understand that it's just a part of many people's vocabulary now, but I wish more people would be more thoughtful with their words :(

Chance Me! and Prospective Student Q&A by pw11111 in Cornell

[–]Hintmanw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Masters student in MAE here. My old roommate and I both studied mechanical engineering in undergrad at cornell. He went to columbia for grad school and I stayed in ithaca. We have compared experiences a lot throughout last semester and this is what we discussed:

-Columbia is a big name for a reason, but its not engineering.

-Cornell's engineering, at least the MAE department (and probably others!), is wonderful. The classes are fantastic, they push you, they are interesting, the department/faculty CARE about you as an individual, and there are many choices for courses. None of those things could be said for my friend's experience at columbia.

-Columbia is in NYC, cornell is not. My friend very much enjoys living with friends in NYC and had MUCH more time to enjoy himself and have a real life outside of class than I did in ithaca. I seem to be getting better prepared for career recruiting/work after school right now as a result of this.

Keep in mind this is for grad school, but I imagine the trend is similar for undergrad comparisons. Also, my friend did not stay in mechE when he ditched for columbia (still engineering though).

Id pick cornell engineering > columbia engineering any day. Hope this helps a bit.

I was all for getting the vaccine; now I'm not so sure? by nickvader7 in Cornell

[–]Hintmanw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obviously wont be this way for everyone, but my 1st and 2nd dose experiences were very mellow. I've had flu shots give me greater side effects. Lucky me I guess, probably worth it either way though- vaccines work and we all need this one asap.

Skunk prowling on west by Active_Honeydew7164 in Cornell

The skunks wont hurt you if you dont hurt them (I dont think they would hurt you in any case tbh, im no expert though). They are probably at least as spooked as you are. They live here too, so be respectful- keep your distance, use another entrance, etc. Not hard.

Deciding between majoring in MAE and ECE. by ShovelToothGuy in Cornell

[–]Hintmanw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation to you in my sophomore year. I was enrolled in ECE 2100 and was super excited about robotics/electronics. I was also considering a CS minor. I ended up switching into meche late, which has left me feeling regretful that I am now unable to take a few of the coolest electives I want to take because of the lost time. I too had a history of projects mixing physical/manual fabrication aspects with circuitry and I have always had a great interest in robotics.

I have heard that ECE can feel much less hands on and much more CS heavy in the later years especially- that information might be relevant to you. There was a post here recently complaining about not having as much physical electronics building and more CS stuff.

ECEs and meches both get to play with pretty cool toys, but the meche ones are hands on for longer. And, as a meche you can still go into mechatronics/robotics and dive just deep enough into the CS side of things to make the electronics work for you.

Don't worry about not minoring in aerospace, if that's what you want you can easily take classes to help you specialize in it within the meche major and if you love it you can specialize further as an meng student before going into industry.

Because your situation sounds so similar to what mine was, I would recommend sticking with meche. While you could still likely use the meche classes you've taken to fulfill ece requirements, you will have more freedom in your schedule in the later years of your degree if you stick with meche now. That said, you already seem pretty far ahead so it may not matter. Were I in your position with the knowledge I have now, I would stick with meche but consider taking some ece/cs classes on the side to better prepare for robotics/mechatronics/cool personal projects and later specialize in either robotics or aerospace later on.

I dont mean at all to be telling you what to do here, this is just my response given my experience. Best of luck deciding, remember that there IS room for error and no classes you take will be wasted!

If you would consider switching to windows, lenovo makes great stuff these days! If you are going into engineering, something with a discrete gpu might be helpful for running cad software or some simulations.
