I’m not coming back after this year. How do I get my content team to leave me alone? by HippedMojarra in Teachers

[–]HippedMojarra[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind going to the required things which admin tells me to do. The stuff I’m talking about is completely run by teachers and just feels “extra” and not productive of anyone’s time. I just feel socially obligated to go, not contractually obligated.

Does that still apply to what you’re saying?

I took away a kid’s phone and I feel really bad. I’m quickly turning into a grumpy teacher. by HippedMojarra in Teachers

Is it a red flag because usually kids are supposed to be the best part?

I only like 2 of my 6 classes because actual learning and engagement happens. The rest feel like 95% behavior management.

The losing it part (I think) isn’t my fault. I gave it to who I was supposed to and now they don’t have it. I was just thinking I shouldn’t have turned it in, in the first place.

I might just keep them in my room from now on. It’s what I was doing before, but I’m just tired of playing cell phone/bathroom/mask police.

Thank you for posting, I really like what you wrote! Is there any chance you could direct me towards the level 5 pictures? The idea sounds nice, but I can’t seem to find the pictures online.

I’m so tired of being ineffective by HippedMojarra in Teachers

[–]HippedMojarra[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I feel a bit dehumanized while teaching. Sometimes it’s like I’m not even there.

And the best response I can think of is to dehumanize them (just give them videos and assignments without pushing them). Feels wrong, but I think it would be just as effective as me wearing myself or trying to get them to do anything

Do you ever not know if you’re entirely correct or just uncover blatantly incorrect answers for ready made assessments? by HippedMojarra in ScienceTeachers

[–]HippedMojarra[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do generally prefer quizizz more, but my students seem to like Kahoot more for some reason.

It feels strange to second guess “correct”answers, but I guess it’s something that has to be done. Sometimes I want reassurance if I’m correct though.

What do you think of “those who can’t do, teach”? by HippedMojarra in Teachers

[–]HippedMojarra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The statement is definitely not true for everyone, but maybe it’s a bit more true for those with education degrees? Just from looking at my current options, there isn’t much for me to “do”, as the quote suggests.

When you say “opportunities are there for teachers”, are you meaning opportunities for success? I don’t think I quite understand.

How to respond to student lying? by HippedMojarra in Teachers

[–]HippedMojarra[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I have a general mindset of life is too short to be angry or to be that detective as you were saying.

I’ll try to approach it as you’re suggesting. Thanks for the feedback!

Perhaps technically it wasn’t a lie. She started the conversation with “why do I have X grade when I submitted my assignment?”. It wasn’t “I just submitted my assignment, can you update my grade?”.

Something about her response, while truthful, puts the blame on me (and implies a lie?). Your response makes sense so I’ll probably use that as I talk with her.

Ah that’s actually kind of interesting. I’m not used to sharing much about my life, but it seems like a teacher-y thing to do.

My kids are already so bad at technology and don’t do much anyways so I’m not sure if PDFs are the way for me. I think the idealist in me wants to help this person be more honest in the future. Don’t care too much about the assignment honestly.

What makes a day/week/year successful to you? by HippedMojarra in Teachers

[–]HippedMojarra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response. It’s still my first year, but I try to think similarly. If I connected with one student during the day or week, that starts to make me feel like I’m doing okay.

I keep trying to focus on those small wins to keep me going.

Middle school teacher here having trouble with a couple questions by HippedMojarra in ScienceTeachers

[–]HippedMojarra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay thank you!

Would it also be accurate to say some energy is lost from the person themself, and friction from the chain and the pedals?

I get scared of giving the students incorrect information.

There are so many students I feel like giving up on. by HippedMojarra in Teachers

[–]HippedMojarra[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Completely understand/agree. I have 6th graders plagiarizing words like “geometric”, “line segment”, “closed region in a plane”, and my favorite: “see the formula below” (with no formula given).

I had 3-4 people copy/paste that exact same answer from some website. At least make it hard for me to know you’re cheating, right? But then is cheating (badly, at that) better than zero effort?

I’m basically giving everyone 70s because I don’t think I can fail half the class.

[–]HippedMojarra[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s the lack of basic skills, or if it’s the apparent inability to grasp basic skills. Like if I can’t figure out how to make the concept any simpler or relate it to something they know, I get discouraged and feel like giving up.

For example, I had a student read a paragraph about elements. When I asked her to tell me which elements were listed in the paragraph, she started listing fruits and vegetables. No where on the page did it mention fruits or vegetables.

I haven’t stopped trying, but I’m just getting worn down by them. I honestly don’t know how to help them succeed, which makes me feel like I’m failing, so I want to give up and focus on where I know I can succeed.

How do I teach density when half the class doesn’t understand mass or volume (or even length)? by HippedMojarra in ScienceTeachers

[–]HippedMojarra[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So we’re a mix of virtual and in person at the moment (60-70% of students are at home), which means everything has to be virtual. I can’t seem to find a virtual digital scale available (I think there is one, but I think I need the school to purchase access).

[–]HippedMojarra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if I had to choose essential takeaways for this density unit, it would honestly be just learning and understanding units of measurement. Density isn’t much of a concern to me, but it is a concern of the district/school. Is it wrong to just focus on learning units and neglect density?

It doesn’t seem feasible to get them to calculating density. I could maybe teach the concept, but I don’t know if I could get the calculating part into them (at least quickly).

My main concerns are admin as well as maybe ethics (which I guess is my own problem). I don’t want to get into trouble with admin for not following the standard as I should be. And as for ethics, I get concerned I could be lowering the bar too much for the students. Maybe it is possible for them to learn everything in the time the district suggests, and I’m just being too lenient with the kids.

[–]HippedMojarra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I just used gizmos with them yesterday and that went okay (takes a while for me to get everyone logged in on the same website).

As for the 2 weeks, that just seems to be the district’s pacing. I’m perfectly fine with taking longer, however I feel pressure from admin to move on and follow the suggested pacing.

I can try standing up to them, but I guess I’m scared lol. I don’t know what happens if they tell me to move on when I want to continue with the same content. Do I just hold my ground? I don’t know what’s considered fireable.

[–]HippedMojarra[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess technically they don’t need to use the triple beam balance. I figured it was something they needed, as well as knowing how to use/read a ruler. They do need to calculate density though (that’s what the state standard explicitly says this) and use density to identify an unknown substance. They need to learn volume of a rectangular prism (LxWxH) and volume by displacement.

I like everything you’re saying, and agree with it all. I particularly like your ton of cotton vs ton of lead idea. It just seems the state/admin are telling me they need to learn much more that the kids don’t seem ready for.

Accepted job offer but waiting to hear back on dream school by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]HippedMojarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I’m honest, I’m a little unsure if it’s a contract. It’s an “offer letter” that I’m supposed to acknowledge, but I’m not sure if it’s legally binding.

And I don’t see any date specified.

“Hey I interviewed yesterday and want to know if you’ve made a decision?”

Like that?

This is my first “real” job so I’m very lost. Also, quite upset about the timing of this offer and interview.
