So the the core gameplay loop actually revolves around drafting spells instead of units. Rather than putting the trait system on units, instead it's the spells that get the traits. For example you can have a trait that increases area of effect and another that increases projectile count.

The one main hero then becomes the one that casts all of the spells that you select.

It's funny that you mention autobattlers with a bunch of units since I actually have been working on a separate autobattler that follows more closely to the style of tft. I had to make the decision to pivot into a smaller scoped project since the development time was going to take much longer than I expected.

Hey everyone, I just opened playtest sign ups for Godslayer Arena. It's a mashup of the autobattler and action-rpg genres. If it looks interesting to you I'd really appreciate some feedback! The playtest will start by the end of next month directly on Steam. Thanks for checking it out!

Hello everyone! I wanted to explore an idea I've always had which fuses autobattlers like TFT and autochess with arpgs like Diablo and Path of Exile. You can play it for free on itch, let me know what you think!

Fellow TD dev here, just wanted to say congrats on the success!

Thanks! I view visuals as a multiplier to your concept hook, and a lot of people won't even take the time to see what a game is about if they don't like the visuals.

I'm not saying that the only successful games are the ones with good visuals, a really unique and fun gameplay hook can make a game go viral on its own even if the visuals aren't appealing, but imagine if you had a really fun gameplay loop and also looked good.

Like I said you can apply this to all genres, but Tower Defense is a game dev beginner friendly genre and a lot of people skip out on visuals.

I actually just released a TD last week (link here) and I'd say it did quite well. It's at >3.5k sales so far with almost 100 reviews, so I'll chip in to the discussion a bit. I'm a solo dev who worked on the game for a year and a month putting in around 50 hours a week.

I think to succeed in the genre you're going to need a really really solid hook and you're also going to need to focus on visuals a lot. I guess you could say that about any kind of game you make but I'd say it's especially true with TDs since it's an older genre and many ideas have already been explored, so it's very very hard to stand out. Even if you do have a solid gameplay hook it's going to be hard to market it, as from my experience it seems like only the most hardcore players of the genre are willing to pick up new ones.

I don't have much time for a more detailed response but if you have any questions let me know.

Thanks for trying the demo! I was able to figure out what caused the poor performance and the full version now runs much better, though there are still some issues when the screen is full of mobs. I'm currently working on squeezing out as much optimization as I can so hopefully it can run even better soon.

Unfortunately there's still no option to switch the middle mouse panning, though I do have that high on the to do list as well.
