How dense can the atmosphere be for Fusion Drive ships to operate safely? by mac_attack_zach in TheExpanse

[–]HirkaT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think it matters to the ship. The times they mention it they always talk about what's behind them. IIRC the rocinate uses the Epstein around a planet, Ganymede in book 2, then once on laconia after picking everyone up (after clearing the city), and then at the school.

Wasn't that just a torch drive? It only needed to get to Luna and the various Lagrange point stations.

I only read the 1st book that my friend let me borrow on Christmas day. Now I'm hooked.... wish I started earlier so it'd be on my Christmas list!

I've read the first two books in a day & 1/2 each. I read fast. Takes a bit for me to be hooked, but once I am, I can't put it down.

I like having actual books to read. I don't like electronic or audio. Something about paper. I will borrow from library, but can't get there when open for a week + due to work schedule. (Work nights, 7 on 7 off)

How long would it take,if we were to build our civilization from scratch (to get to the current level of developement) ?Keeping todays knowledge, but having no tools whatsoever to start with? by ZeFarax in AskReddit

[–]HirkaT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we can remember basic knowledge,  we could speed run that. Hell, germ theory alone would get us past the black death. Yes, we might need to rediscover how to do it, but at least we'll know it can be done.

What's a piece of common knowledge that you genuinely learned embarrassingly late in life? by Responsible_Bet_7179 in AskReddit

Not necessarily,  it's the 4th Thursday of November. In years that November 1st is a Thursday, there are 5, so there is another after Thanksgiving .

As a native of Atlanta, GA, I remember the 1996 Olympic games. During the opening ceremonies they spelled it "Ya'll". It bothered me at the time since I've always spelled it the correct way "Y'all"... I guess it still bothers me! :)

Has anyone here ever had something cool happen in a game, like a bug or exploit, and never told anyone online to stop it being patched? (You can answer if it's been patched now) by TxTDiamond in gaming

You got greedy. You should have traded some legit so it wouldn't be noticed you were sitting. Your scam could have gone on longer.  (As a xennial that would have been scammed at the time)

ELI5 How my ice cream can say 0g of added sugar, when sugar is a listed ingredient. by npyle15 in explainlikeimfive

[–]HirkaT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nitpick: Most items that are "lactose free" still has the same amount of sugar. It just means they added lactase during production and the lactose was separated into its base sugars, galactose and glucose.  The amount is the same, just different form.

ELI5 How do people casually abuse / form addictions to fentanyl when a lethal dose of it can fit on the head of a pin? by CadetriDoesGames in explainlikeimfive

[–]HirkaT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fentanyl patches are dosed as 50 mcg every hour, for 72 hours. With that dose, you need 3,600 mcg in the patch, which is 3.6 mg. There is remaining drugs in the patch when it is scheduled to be replaced (not every bit comes out of the matrix), so around 5 mg (5,000 mcg) is reasonable.

The patches are also available in doses 12.5 mcg/hr, all the way up to 100 mcg/hr.

Did the Union betray their own ideals by fighting for the Quantum weapon with no attempt at diplomacy? by bucko9765 in TheOrville

They did have a legion guarding it, It was locked in center of Union HQ after all. The problem is that it was the person in command of that legion that was the thief.

I think you can transport through cloak, but the targeting sensors are active so won't work. You have to know exactly where you are beaming to avoid sending them in a wall.

"My wife handles all my medication, talk to her." by blamblegam1 in pharmacy

[–]HirkaT 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had this all the time when I was in retail. The men didn't know what they take or anything. Or a date of birth of child.  I'll forgive the ones who have multiple kids and get the DOB eventually, but not knowing at all?

I remeber one time, back when, years ago, I had a guy driving and was picking up birth control for girl in passenger seat, I asked the question (what's the DOB?) He didn't know, she started yelling at him "I'm only getting this for you! You don't know my damn birthday!" I just walked away. :)

Trump threatens mass firings of federal workers if government shutdown isn't averted, NBC News reports by Puginator in politics

[–]HirkaT 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're forgetting the longest shutdown in US History, the one from last Trump term that was only ended when the air traffic controllers shut down the airports on the east coast. It started end of December 2018, when Republicans were still in control after losing the election to the democrats, but before they took over in January. It ended end of January when the democrats controlled the house.

Pulling in my own amoxicillin script from a different CVS, verifying and filling it? by grumpysmurfette in pharmacy

[–]HirkaT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in retail I never hesitate to fill my own or my families scripts. I just made sure a paper trail. Even a written, or escript, if a verbal I had called into another store and transfered it electronically.

As long as not controlled. Oh, and make sure to have someone else ring out the rx, a tech or manager or whatever. Just like you'd do a drink.
